Why the Giants are the AFL's number one early-season contender

By Andrew Miller / Editor

The 2019 AFL ladder is finally taking shape after a typically confusing start to the season, with every side in the competition having now been defeated at least once.

Six teams are sitting on three wins and one loss, with Geelong and Brisbane both suffering their first respective defeats in Round 4.

Roar AFL Expert Marnie Cohen joined the Game of Codes podcast on Tuesday to give her take on the true contenders of 2019, telling host Matthew Petherick and Editor Daniel Jeffrey that Greater Western Sydney are leading the charge with Geelong and West Coast close behind.

Leon Cameron’s men became the first team to scalp the in-form Cats over the weekend with an impressive performance that put their premiership credentials well and truly on the table.

A season-ending injury to Callan Ward May have soured the win, but the Giants will be hoping their depth across the midfield and the likely return of Toby Greene will help them maintain momentum.

Greater Western Sydney’s next five fixtures will see them take on Fremantle, Sydney, St Kilda, Hawthorn and Carlton.

the effort was back and we just about matched them on every stat, despite the blowout in the last 10-15 minutes

They were OK in the first Quarter, and had a few good patches after that; but apart from Stack's excellent debut, and a solid effort from Lynch, there wasn't much to get excited about. A great win against Port, though.

If Richmond can avoid the letdown against the tricky swans I have a feeling the tiggy train will start to roll In addition to all the injuries and suspensions, we have had. A tough draw - Pies and then giants and port away is pretty tough We were closer to the giants than people realised. Would have been happy with 3 wins and ecstatic with 4. 2 in the circumstances is ok. Martin back then Riewoldt and Cotchin then Houli If we keep playing with commitment then things can only improve from here

I'd certainly be inclined to place the giants' next five games under the winnable category.
