Global wrap: Colombia, UAE and Ukraine on the rise

By Istanbul Wingman / Roar Guru

Colombia demolished Paraguay on Saturday to claim their first victory in the South American championships, United Arab Emirates crushed hosts Thailand to win the Asian second-division title, and Ukraine overcame Sweden on Sunday to clinch the European North 1 conference.

Not so long ago Colombia were playing in the second division in South America and serving as little more than whipping boys for the Paraguayans on the occasions they did meet. But that changed last year when Colombia prevailed 44-29 in the Americas Rugby Challenge, also involving Mexico and Guyana.

Colombia were also promoted to the first division in 2018 and got closest to victory in a 28-26 loss to Paraguay in Luque. This time they were hosts and duly romped to a 43-13 victory in Medellin. Los Tucanes, as they are known – name after a large-beaked bird – may just be challenging Brazil as the fastest improving team in the Americas.

That said, Brazil themselves crushed Paraguay 66-10 in their opening game last week, so Saturday’s result probably says as much about the Paraguayans as it does about Colombia. Los Yacares (alligators) appear to have fallen well off the pace with their exclusion from the Americas Rugby Championships.

Meanwhile, Uruguay ‘B’ powered to a 38-19 victory over the Brazilians in Sao Paulo on Saturday, while Argentina ‘B’ blitzed Chile 55-3 in Tucuman. Argentina and Uruguay both have two wins from two.

In Thailand the UAE rampaged through the Asian second-division championships, scoring a combined 133 points to 19 from two games. After thumping Guam 82-7 in the semi-finals midweek, they overwhelmed Thailand 50-12 in the final at Phasuk. Kazakhstan, a nation which once reached the World Cup qualifying repechages, defeated Guam 17-8 for third.

Sports opinion delivered daily

This tournament was effectively the third division, as the Asian Championships, involving the top three nations, are not counted. The first division runs below that and will kick off next week with Taiwan hosting the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Singapore.

The Asian championship itself got underway on Saturday with South Korea cruising to a 52-14 win over Malaysia in Incheon. The visitors scored first, but from that point on it was mostly one-way traffic. Hong Kong is also involved, but perennial champs Japan have withdrawn once again, as they are preparing for the World Cup later this year.

In Odessa on Sunday Ukraine wrapped up the ENC North 1 conference with a 23-14 victory over Sweden. The visitors certainly took the game to their hosts but ultimately lacked the finesse and composure to break down the home side’s resolute defence.

Ukraine will now progress to a play-off with Malta for promotion to the European Trophy tournament, effectively the ENC’s second division. Malta topped the ENC South 1 conference on points for-and-against differential over Croatia, with whom they drew.

A nation with a population of 45 million, Ukraine has played in Europe’s top division a couple of times in the past, albeit with little success, notwithstanding a narrow victory over the Portuguese in Odessa seven years ago.

Elsewhere, Andorra made amends for last week’s loss to Bulgaria with a 33-0 home-win over Serbia in the ENC South conference II competition, and Slovenia demolished Slovakia 91-5 in Ljubljana. Slovenia top the table ahead of Bulgaria on bonus points. Latvia lead the North Conference II and will travel to Norway next weekend.

There’s not much happening in Africa on the international scene apart from Ivory Coast’s 23-22 win over Ghana’s Eagles in a friendly encounter at Elmina last week. The two would have been second-division rivals in African competition this year, except that the championships were canned.

Meanwhile, the Fijian Latui edged the Samoan Kagifa 38-22 with a late try in Lautoka on Friday to kick off the second of two mini-tournaments being staged by the Rapid Rugby organisers. The Western Force will also be involved.

Rapid Rugby is expected to kick off in earnest next year. The Force recently won the first mini-tournament against Hong Kong’s South China Tigers and Singapore’s Asia-Pacific Barbarians. The West Australians were made to work hard for a 7-3 away win against the latter in their final game.

In North American club rugby San Diego confirmed their place atop the MLR table this weekend with a 31-21 win over Utah. A few weeks out from the play-offs, the Legion have opened up a five-point lead on New Orleans Gold, who suffered a 27-20 setback against Houston’s Sabercats.

Defending champs Seattle Seahawks defeated Colorado’s Glendale Raptors 41-31 to consolidate third place, a point behind New Orleans. Expansion teams New York and Canada’s Ontario are locked in a battle for the fourth semi-finals spot with the Raptors still an outside shot.

Lots of good things happening in Colombia. My fiancee is Colombian so I've taken a keen interest in the sport there (as WC Rugger should be very familiar). The most exciting thing about Colombian rugby to me is that it is run 100% by Colombians - it is not an upper class sport with a heavy presence of British expats as you'd typically expect. The national team is 100% Colombian and they are doing a great job bringing the sport to the poor comunas. The national team's training field is actually a beautiful one located in one of the comunas (side note, Medellin has gone through an awesome transformation due in part to the creation of public works in poor neighborhoods, but that's a separate conversation). The current captain Juan Manuel Diosa is from Comuna 13 - this video is a few years old but gives you an idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKN2Lhg6Crg.

Uruguay beat Colombia 36-24 in Montevideo. That’s actually a pretty good result for Colombia. They’re a good shot at beating Chile and potentially even Brazil to claim a solid 3rd place in the championship. They’re really progressing very quickly and are putting in place the necessary pieces to maintain that growth long term.

Thanks. Not sure I have any recollection of that. Rugby is at a very rudimentary level in Tanzania.

A kind of provincial competition held between teams from Kenya (5), Uganda (2) and Tanzania (1) that ran up until 2011.

What was the Bamburi Cup, pray tell?

The Nations Championship funding could be transformational for the likes of Kenya et al. It could see the return of the Bamburi Cup and involve Zimbabwean teams at an increased level of professionalism never seen before.

For your edification, my inquiry as to just how a city so far off in Siberia became Russian rugby's stronghold has been answered on the Youtube site itself: "After the collapse of the USSR, Russian rugby was in decline. But in Krasnoyarsk there were two clubs. The city is divided in half the largest Siberian river Enisei. On the left bank of the river based Krasny Yar. On the right bank based Enisei-STM. This derby helped keep rugby in city. Nobody wanted to lose, so they looked for sponsors, invited good players, developed their schools."

Perhaps, if the Maghreb Tri Nations does go ahead, they could stage a match between the winners, and the winners of that play Namibia for the defacto championship...

This is good news. & perhaps the North Africans will play their Maghreb Tri Nations again. No substitute for the African champs, of course, but it's something. "The Victoria Cup pitting Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe is set to be revived this year. Following the cancellation of the Africa Gold Cup early this year by Rugby Africa, Kenya will play matches against the two African rivals in a bid to keep the Simbas competitive this year" https://www.the-star.co.ke/sports/2019-05-22-simbas-uganda-and-zim-as-victoria-cup-is-revived/?fbclid=IwAR2Qm-WOJoDb2uxXlAfJYvKRYnBHW_79PlDIUIvbfk68Xod5QlSF3AnYiWg

Apologies again. The city which is home of the two strongest teams in Spain is actually Valladolid, just north of Madrid, nor Zaragoza. Their two powerhouse clubs El Salvador and Valladolid are through to the final again.

Sorry, those question marks at the end were supposed to be a geek icon. Zaragoza was in fact named after Augustos. I lived in Spain for 5 years but that's one place I never got to.

I wonder how a city so remote as Krasnoyarsk became the rugby "capital" of Russia. Was it due to the local rivalry that developd between Krasny Yar & Yenisei themselves? I wonder. There's a similar situation in Spain with both the top clubs based in Zaragoza, a small city located between Madrid and Barcelona (and named after Caesar Augustus ????).

Yenisei are developing a nice facility at the moment. Recently finished the first stand and about to start the second and will have 5k seats. Heated pitch. Indoor training facilities with pool and gym etc. Plus, a small hotel.

Krasny Yar have beaten cross-town rivals Yenisei STM 17-10 in the Russian club final. These two powerhouse clubs often contest the national final, and also compete in European competition. They are based in the city of Krasnoyarsk, the unofficial "capital" on Russian rugby. This is located in the middle of Siberia, a few hundred kms north of the Mongolian border, and have to play their "home" games in Europe at venues much further west, such as Sochi on the Black Sea. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYUZYVmvqcE

It's a shame Japan aren't involved. & while I appreciate the vast distances involved, I think it's a shame they run mini-tournaments instead of proper leagues. A few days and it's all over, 2 games and you're fortunes decided for the following year. Maybe they should break it up into Far East, South Asia and Middle East zones . . .
