The Crows have to battle their own history to re-sign stars

By Hayden Tilbrook / Roar Rookie

The Adelaide Crows will have to do away with their own past in the fight to retain future stars Alex Keath and Hugh Greenwood.

After both were notable omissions from the Adelaide side that lost to Carlton by 27 points at the MCG in Round 19, further doubt has been cast over the out-of-contract pair’s future with the Crows.

Both players arrived at West Lakes as Category B rookies – with Greenwood making the switch to footy from the Perth Wildcats in the National Basketball League and Keath’s cricket career stalling at the Adelaide Strikers – and have since established themselves as important players in the Crows setup.

Keath has been a revelation in defence in 2019, averaging 17 disposals and 6.5 marks per game in the absence of the injured Tom Doedee.

The ex-cricketer is reportedly keen to remain in Adelaide, but contract negotiations continue to drag out with a few Victorian clubs closely monitoring the situation.

Crows fans will be nervous, knowing the club’s poor history when it comes to keeping quality centre half backs.

With delays on a new deal for Keath, the Adelaide faithful will be uncomfortably reminded of the Jake Lever saga – which ending with Lever making the switch to Melbourne after deferring negotiations throughout his breakout 2017 season.

Lever’s defection is the most recent on the list of star half backs to desert the Crows. Greater Western Sydney co-captain Phil Davis departed for the Giants in 2012, after All Australian Nathan Bock jumped ship to join the inaugural Gold Coast Suns in 2011.

Greenwood – who has played 47 games since making his Adelaide debut in 2017 – will also become a free agent when his current contract expires at the end of 2019.

The 27-year-old’s security in the Crows midfield was reportedly a major factor in ongoing talks for a new deal with the club, but has now been omitted for the second time this season against Carlton after he was dropped – and subsequently recalled as a late inclusion – for the Round 12 victory over the Giants.

Greenwood’s recent axing comes less than three weeks after reports Hawthorn had expressed interest in the third-year midfielder.

The Hawks would present as an appealing destination for the out-of-favour mid-forward, with a good track record of recruiting ex-Crows.

Ricky Henderson – who was shown the door by Adelaide in 2016 – is averaging a career-high 25 disposals in 2019, trailing only James Worpel for total possessions at Waverley.

Meanwhile, Jack Gunston is now a three-time premiership player and All Australian since donning the brown and gold in 2012.

Greenwood now looks likely to join the catalogue of players to leave Adelaide and play career-best footy elsewhere.

Geelong’s Patrick Dangerfield won a Brownlow Medal in his first season with the Cats in 2016, while Charlie Cameron and Jarryd Lyons look set to challenge for this year’s premiership with Brisbane less than two years and three years respectively since departing West Lakes.

Keath and Greenwood join a host of Crows to come out of contract at seasons end. Senior players Andy Otten, Cam Ellis-Yolmen, David Mackay, Jake Kelly, Richard Douglas, Riley Knight and Sam Jacobs are all yet to re-sign past 2019.

All eyes will be fixed firmly on Adelaide both on and off the field in the back end of the season.

Yawn. You are back where you started ... a long way behind everyone else! I have pointed out that your use of the description "star player" may does differ from mine (and I suspect others) and most pf those you mentioned are hardly stars and most have not performed better at their new clubs! Pretty basic really. PS: You didn't ask any questions in your previous post. The past posts are left there for all to see (including you). Do try and keep up. No further correspondence will be entered into!

"the fight to retain future stars Alex Keath and Hugh Greenwood" What "fight to retain" these players are we talking about, exactly? There is no fight to retain them. They've both already said that they want to stay, but the club isn't offering them contracts. Adelaide isn't fighting to keep these guys, it's actively shopping them around. The list is in a whole world of trouble, and these are two guys who have some trade value whilst also being surplus to requirements. Part of the problem with the list is the midfield is weighted way too heavily towards slower, inside, contest types (Sloane, Gibbs, Crouch x 2, Greenwood, Ellis-Yolmen) with not enough outside pace. Greenwood is the only one of those players out of contract and with trade value, so he'll get moved on. Keath is playing the 3rd tall role like a superstar, because he's playing that role in a structure that lets him look like a superstar. He's filling in for the injured Doedee who played that same role last year in his first year of AFL footy and performed similarly. And he got the job after Jake Lever left who was also playing that same role with the same level of success. Lever is an OK player who was playing a role that let him look like a million dollars (or $900k, at least). Now ask yourself what is more likely - are the Crows just plucking these guys from nowhere and somehow they're all turning out to be guns? Or are they just picking solid players and slotting them into the easiest role in the team to play? The Crows got 2 first round picks for Lever, which is looking like daylight robbery. If they can take a category B rookie like Keath and turn that into a vaguely decent pick to assist with the rebuild, they'll be all over that deal. These won't be the only ones, either - I'd expect a serious clean-out there this year and next year, there would be very few if any untouchable players if the deal is right.

Outside of Shaun Burgoyne, the others were let go, not wanted. So totally different scenario to the Crows.

I named 8 players that I think have done better at other clubs than the Crows from a list of 13.The other five have all contributed to there new clubs. For your own reasons you mixed the quotes up.The basic premise of this article was the Crows battle to keep Star players my post have been consistent with that.I made the statement are.you happy with the Crows.not winning a flag this Century that is not putting words in your mouth.

Pretty sure that your comment is available for all to read above but here it is again in case you forgot what you wrote : "I stand by my point that the Crows lose too many star players who perform better at there new club." Nowhere have I said that the Crows are on the "right track" (your words not mine)! Not only do you struggle with what you have written yourself, but you also seem to like to put words into other people's mouths! Keep guessing Boo

Fair call Geoff, Rozee looks like one out of the box.I follow Geelong and we have recruited some gems from Adelaide ( Enright obviously the best ) .I think the Sanfl is the second best league in the country ( too many Afl players in Vfl ) so there must be some undiscovered talent there.

Read my comment again Pedro.I said can't think of a player that has left Adelaide and not contributed at there new club.Geoff said maybe Tippett ,its too early to judge Lever and McGovern.I am not poking no bears but if you think the Crows who have not won a flag this century are on the right track good luck.IMO your recruiting and player retention needs to be looked at.

You might want to define the terms "big money" and "huge 5 year contract" Jack as all clubs must pay 95% of the cap and it is generally understood that Adelaide shares the $ around and does not have a big wage marquee type player.

I've already expressed my disappointment at how the Crows didn't bother to target Connor Rozee from North Adelaide and other local talent in the off season with a bit of creative adjustment of the squad - credit to Port for having the smarts to snap him up

Pretty sure you rated those players as "better" at their new clubs! Now they are making a contribution. As Geoff from Bruce pointed out, it seems that some just like to poke the bear!

Geoff, had the three players you mentioned in the list of 13 I recalled of the top of my head.Too early to judge Lever and McGovern both young enough to be anything or nothing.Tippett probably more of a dud.I agree Adelaide have a need for quicker players IMO the onballers are too one paced.Correct me if I am wrong but the four players you identified all started at other clubs so combined with a significant number of players leaving may identify the way forward for recruiting at Adelaide.Place greater emphasis on recruiting and developing local talent (not neccesarily high draft picks).

Crows must have some salary cap issues? Gibbs and betts on big money and contracted . 28 year old Sloane on huge 5 year contract. Perhaps they have been lucky to have talented players on such cheap wage but to keep these two will put more pressure on salary cap. Players on big money and no flag is a worrying sign, they may need to Let These boys go

Kurt Tippett? Paid massive dollars by the Swans for the occasional goal and a few minutes in the ruck. Jake Lever and Mitch McGovern? Lured by the big dollars but both appear to be injury prone. All played well for the Crows but haven't set the world on fire when they left. Not sure these blokes were missed in terms of their character and commitment. Bit over all these accusations thrown at the Crows as being a club everyone wants to leave. Most of these blokes were provided an opportunity and decided to leave for the big dollars offered elsewhere or to go home - it happens. Losing Dangerfield really hurt as he was fantastic for the club. It wouldn't have been an easy decision for him. The Crows need to make every effort to keep Keath and Greenwood but there are other elephants in the room - what do we do with Eddie Betts, Taylor Walker, Bryce Gibbs and Josh Jenkins? The Crows seriously need some youth and speed in the squad so some tough decisions need to be made in terms of list management. And is Pyke the man to make these decisions? Is Blighty available?

Pedro, I concede Vince's B and F at the crows means his form there was better than at Melbourne.I struggle to find a player that has left Adelaide gone to another club and not contributed.

Davis and Gunston both went young (Davis for the $ offered by the new club with Draft concessions. Gunston to go home) so it is difficult to rate their form at Adelaide v elsewhere, They were both already identified as future stars when they left. Dangerfield was already a star at Adelaide (He finished top 6 in the 4 previous years at Adelaide prior to actually winning the Brownlow at Geelong in 2016 so OK - he has gone better at Geelong). McKernan and Lyons - now that is funny. McKernan is not AFL standard at Adelaide or Essendon. Is Lyons a loss to Gold Coast or Adelaide (both have traded him out as not good enough for AFL ... and IMHO both are correct in that judgment)? He is nonetheless playing well at Brisbane but will never be a Premiership player (if Brisbane is to win a Premiership in the next 10 years ... and I doubt it ... then Lyons won't be in that team). Bernie Vince won the B&F at Adelaide - hard to see how he was better at Melbourne? He was traded out by Adelaide eventually (ie: he did not leave willingly). Cameron does not have an Eddie Betts type of spectacular footballer to share the limelight with at Brisbane. He is (and will be) a bit hot and cold. Apart from that I agree with you.

Pedro, I will grant that those two players are better at there second club although Hombsch is at the Suns so harder to line up the form.I came up with 13 ex Adelaide players in the last six years at other clubs that I as an outsider rate. These I think are better at there second club Dangerfield,Henderson,Davis,Gunston,McKernan,Lyons ,Vince and Cameron.

Impey and Hombsch are clearly better players at their new clubs. The jury is out on Polec who is equally as good at North Melbourne as he was at Port (but better than he was at Brisbane).

At Port he was a star a few years back.Has had an average year at Hawthorn.I get your point that Port have lost a star in Wingard but why did Port agree to trade him out if as you say the media was gaga over him.I stand by my point that the Crows lose too many star players who perform better at there new club.

If you don't think Wingard was a star, you should probably let the AFL media know. They used to lose their mind over him on a regular basis.
