Which South Australian club coach is under more pressure?

By The Roar / Editor

After two complete capitulations over the weekend, it looks like it’ll be another year of no finals football in South Australia.

It’s a footy-mad state down in SA and, after years of disappointment, both fanbases have grown increasingly dissatisfied with coaches Don Pyke and Ken Hinkley.

Pyke’s only in his fourth season and has a grand final appearance under his belt, but things have never been the same at West Lakes since the Collective Minds camp of 2018.

Hinkey may have unearthed some incredible young talent over the last two years of his tenure, but a finals miss this season would be a fourth in five seasons.

Which coach should be feeling the heat more?

On the Game of Codes podcast, we were joined by Roar AFL expert Marnie Cohen to have a look at how both coaches are travelling, before making a call on who’s more likely to get the chop.

Listen to the debate:

Barring a modern miracle, neither the Crows nor Power will be playing September this season.

If the Bulldogs beat the Crows on Sunday, which they probably will, that’s curtains. Even if Adelaide win, they need to win by about five goals to overtake the Dogs on percentage, while Port would need a 40-ish point win over Fremantle to sneak in.

The club will struggle to attract a quality new coaching group if it does not have the full resources available in the soft cap. Catch 22 but them's the rules.

Hang the cost. Cut out the rust now. Why waste time to save money? Get a new bloke with new support coaches. ----- Why do I feel like The Crows are an arm of the Banking Industry? Get rid of the bankers now!!! ---- I want to smash the place like McIntosh smashed packs. Warm, flat beer is us!

Probably deserves 1 more year and, whilst the Crows could pay Pyke out, the impact of a payout on the Soft Cap would hamper the Football Dept going forward.

Why wait? Pyke is not going to change. Pay him out. Staunch the flow now.

It also shows liquidity and assets went from $4,031,876 in 2017 to $7,211,142 in 2018. That is an improvement of over $3 million whilst also paying down said debt incurred under SANFL mismanagement.

That 2018 Financial Statement for Port shows Current and Non-Current borrowings and provisions being over $10m?

Beers at AO are $9:50 (full strength 425ml). See Last-Year for Kochie discussing the reasons why Port did not pay debt down last year. See for Rucci discussing why the club is in difficulty this year. Any additional revenue (incl sponsorships) generated through the China venture has been eaten up by the significant costs. Port has not reported a profit on the China matches ever and it has been suggested that they will not do so again this year ... "this is a long term strategy" ... "we are finding it difficult to break into the tough China market" ... "our success in China should not be measured financially alone" ... "we expect to turn a profit in the near future ... perhaps next year" .... and on it goes. The additional major sponsor GFG is a Gupta's private company and reflects a political need/opportunism. He has joined Oak as neither are able to assume a true Major Sponsorship position. The $11m debt figure can be gleaned from the financial statement at - start by adding the current and non-current Interest bearing loans and borrowings as well as the provisions (>$10m)

If you download the PDF of AFL clubs financial statements for 2018 you will find your figures are incorrect.

I've never heard that figure, and I follow most Port news. What's a beer worth at Adelaide oval this year? Last year it was worth $9 for a "pint" which is really a stubbie. Won't be long before they strangle this golden goose and male it to unaffordable to go, couple that with Kenny being on the nose and our team stinking up the joint and maybe that figure is right. Membership is still ok, and they did make money from China as they picked up a major sponsor.

It has been reported that no repayments are being made (note: Kochie's comments on radio at end of 2018 highlighting that the failure to secure a major sponsor had prevented promised repayments from happening). It is reported (generally by the Chief Port Cheerleader in the media - Michelangelo Rucci) that Port's debt is number 2 in the AFL (behind only St Kilda) and currently sits between $11m and $15m (with the latter figure being the likely position at the end of 2019). Their small home crowds has led to a decline in stadium revenue, they are losing on China and still do not have a genuine Major Sponsor (or what they call a 2nd Major Sponsor). Do try and keep up Pelican (although I suspect that you do not live in Adelaide and may not be seeing the public discussion).

You are neglecting the repayments they are making to the AFL. Debt repayment is part of financial recovery. If they were really going down they would not be paying back a million dollars a year. Nice try

I agree in general Footy Nerd - give Pyke 1 more season and if they continue to perform as they have of late (ie: if they continue to not perform) then sack Pyke at the end of next year.

Not according to the SA Media they aren't Pelican. Wishful thinking on your behalf I would suggest! There are regular articles in the SA media (a Port Cheerleader enclave) talking about Port's inability to reach the 40,000 break even crowd numbers at AO (they sit at less than 35,000 per home match), the failure to secure a legitimate major sponsor (they have several less-than-major sponsors but no major sponsor since Renault left), the move to defer some player payments until next year (Boak, Ebert and Hartlett have all acknowledged this in the media), and the expectation that China will turn a profit one day (apparently no profit again this year, hopefully next year). Port has some real financial issues that will require another bail-out or preferrably they will be allowed to fold. The 150 Years in the SANFL celebration next year could be quite grim!

Wishful thinking Pedro. Port have made enough profit every year to pay back millions in debt. We are nearly out of the financial hole left by the SANFL when they were in charge. If we had not escaped their grasp Port would be an ex parrot

Several players (Boak, Hartlett and Ebert have all publicly stated same) have been asked to defer some of their player payments into next year. That raises a couple of possibilities: 1) the membership and crowd figures are quite bad (40,000 is believed to be the average home crowd required to make a profit in Adelaide) and this is placing a strain on cash flow 2) MOST LIKELY the club is cash strapped and can still be complying with the need to pay 95% of the salary cap by deferring to next year 2) The club intends to delist some players this year who still have contracts to run and will use the saved cash to pay them out. PS: China has not helped the bottom line as yet - Port has not reported a profit from the China game EVER and it has been reported that they will not make a profit this year either (AGAIN). Chinese big business is cautious of a club with limited success or appeal to profile their brand. They don't like losers! PPS: They will need another AFL bail-out soon (the SANFL has sold the license so they will not be coming to the party this time).
