With the Bledisloe Tests both poles apart, what did we really learn?

By The Roar / Editor

This year’s two Bledisloe Cup Tests could not have told more different stories.

The first Test saw Australia erase years of heartbreak and misery with a supposedly era-starting 49-27 victory in Perth.

The second Test saw New Zealand restore order in emphatic fashion after annihilating the Wallabies 36-0 at fortress Eden Park.

It’s tempting to look at the most recent Test and declare the All Blacks supreme and Wallabies hapless, but is that really the whole story of the last few months of rugby?

We invited Roar rugby expert Geoff Parkes on the Game of Codes podcast to decipher what has to be one of the hardest to analyse Bledisloe Cup series in recent years.

Listen to the discussion:

With just one month until the start of the Rugby World Cup in 2019, that was the last opportunity for both sides to warm up ahead of the big event.

As dominant as their second Bledisloe performance was, should question marks still linger overNew Zealand following their subpar Rugby Championship performance?

Was Australia’s hard work over the last few months undone in Auckland?

Visit our Game of Codes hub to catch the full episode and be sure to subscribe and review on iHeartRadio, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts or wherever else you’re listening.

.....should have learnt that naught has changed. The only reason the Wallabies won the 1st game was courtesy of the AB's brief, to ensure an illusion of competitiveness exists, by playing one man down for the best part of the game. Well some Australians expressed a gullibility of hope that the status quo was shifting, while the rest of the codes supporters here, the realists, remained unflinchingly disaffected from a code that only exists on the back of Kiwi ex pat support. How many more of these ground hog day Trans Tasman Union events, does this nation have to endure, to appease our over represented Kiwi diaspora?

The Wallabies learnt (or should have learnt) something Bruce Lee could have told them "Never take your eyes off your opponent"

Two games, one each, both (at least near) record scores, means we're equal doesn't it? We both got emphatic home wins. We're both more battle ready for the WC. Bring it on.

By all means, never dismiss the ABs, and I’m a follower. We shouldn’t write the Wallabies at this stage, however. They’re just a couple of in form players away from menacing. A pity they don’t include Quade Cooper. We’d have the three Amigos back. And don’t underestimate O’Connor.

Learn? That certain people who should know better shouldn't get too carried away with piling points on a 14 man side. Lest we forget the Wallabies were all over a mistake ridden All Blacks in Bledisloe One last year too, and then the Kiwis flicked the switch at halftime and it was all over. Invariably these days, the All Blacks are a one-half team, if they don't get the first half right, the second usually makes up for it. If nothing else, the Wallabies did a much better job of putting points on a side a man down than the over-hyped Lions managed, and they had longer to do it. So there's that.

When you have not won the Bled. Cup for 20-odd years, doesn't it come to reason that it makes no sense continuing such a one-sided farce? The constant and predictable defeats have damaged the Wallaby psyche, not to mention the AUS rugby fans. You can only be a whipping boy for so long! No wonder AUS rugby is losing fans/patronage/$/patience and hope.....and young talent looks to AFL, NRL, soccer etc.

Ryan you have successfully convinced me on one thing certainly. I will be investing in a copy of Brett's book. Further I have noticed no articles from you here on The Roar. I haven't any either... My reason is I am a little scared of being criticized... Wonder what your reason is..

One thing is, the expression 'the team to beat' doesn't really apply in a knock out tournament.

Why let people think you're ignorant Ryan, by not clicking on the hyperlink that would answer your question, when you can make a comment like that and remove all doubt?
