Australia must resist the temptation to change the attack for Old Trafford

By The Roar / Editor

After one of the most heartbreaking Ashes losses in series history, Australia are now in a precarious spot ahead of the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford next week.

Despite a blistering bowling effort that saw England skittled for 67 in the first innings, they couldn’t strike the killing blow in the second dig as the hosts completed their biggest successful run chase ever.

That’s led to many calls for Australia to change up the bowling attack ahead of the pivotal fourth Test – but would that be a mistake?

We had Roar cricket expert Glenn Mitchell on the Game of Codes podcast to float some changes for the fourth Ashes Test, but make the case for the bowling attack to stay the same.

Listen to the discussion:

While we spent a good bit of time discussing Australia’s bowling forward, we also spent some time discussing what Australia needs to do with the batting lineup.

Who makes way for the returning Steve Smith? Should Usman Khawaja get moved up the order – or just dropped altogether?

Starc plays in Headingly instead of Pattinson and we have secured the ashes.

I just wish Pattinson was bowling what he is capable of he can rip through a batting lineup. Alot of talk for Starc, but just like the warm up game I would prefer Neser. A professional at working the Duke ball seam and averaged 42 with the bat in shield this yesr.

I probably wouldn't mind seeing Siddle come back into the side.

Starc in for Pattinson. Lyon needs the help from rough created by the left armer. His bowling has been average the last match and a half. Patto isn’t consistent enough to keep in the side. Cummins is the only one out of the four who can be counted on. Harris to be dropped with Smith to come in. He’s had 7 tests with only two 50s. I’d let Ussie open where he’s been successful in tests, in Odis and for his state in all forms. He needs to be told to just play shots

There's nothing expert about Glen Mitchell's writings. He's a very good radio/ tv commentator.
