Starc tears up tour game

By Rob Forsaith / Wire

Derbyshire have been bowled out for 172 on Day 1 of the Ashes tour game in Derby, where Mitchell Starc and Michael Neser grabbed three wickets each.

Starc provided a timely reminder of his old-ball potency, snaring three wickets in an over to help Australia roll the hosts shortly after tea.

Michae Neser, yet to make his Test debut and the last man picked in the 17-man touring party, was on a hat-trick as the hosts crashed to two for no run after winning the toss on Thursday.

Neser, who has snared figures of 3-31 from 11 overs, grabbed all three wickets to fall in Thursday’s morning session while outgunning Starc and Peter Siddle.

But Starc, who was overlooked for the opening three Tests, provided a spark in the 47th over of the innings.

The left-armer fired out Matthew Critchley and Alfie Gleadall with consecutive deliveries then removed Tony Palladino later in the same over.

Critchley was caught behind down the leg side, having been undone by a short ball.

Starc made a mess of Critchley and Palladino’s stumps.

A short turnaround between the fourth Test, which starts at Old Trafford on Wednesday, and the fifth in London will help ensure the express paceman remains in the mix for a recall during the next fortnight.

Marnus Labuschagne finished with figures of 2-37 from 10.2 overs of his leg spin, while Siddle bowled top-scorer Leus du Plooy for 86.

The question is, will they rest Cummins? He’s done a lot of bowling. If they’re continuing with this rotation of the quicks policy, he may be the one to sit out. I’d consider Starc in for Pattinson who was pretty disappointing in the last game. Starc at the very least knocks over the tail quite easily. If Cummins gets rested as well, I’d bring in Neser who has done well in the warmup games and adds strong batting for a bowler with a first class average of 26.

That's my team, except Wade is not in last chance saloon. It'll be interesting to see whether they go with Paine or Carey next summer.

the bar is set low if we call that "tearing" up a game

What about a comment on the AUS opening pair? If Harris and Uzzy make a huge opening stand here then perhaps it is Warner who should be dropped from test side. Warner saved his career by taking those superb slips catches in the 3rd test. However he needs many many more runs if he is to be picked for the AUS summer tests. XI for 4th tet Warner Uzzy Lasagne Smith (welcome back) Head Wade (final chance - wont be picked for AUS summer) Paine (Carey will play AUS summer if we lose the Ashes) Cummins Starc Lyon Hazelwood
