Manly's home final in doubt due to Lottoland asbestos

By The Roar / Editor

The Manly Sea Eagles home elimination final may be removed from their preferred ground following news that asbestos had been detected at Lottoland.

The NRL confirmed in a statement that it was informed on Friday evening of “isolated traces of asbestos” in “a small area of the hill at Lottoland.”

A safety report is currently being compiled which will determine the venue’s suitability to host an NRL Finals match.

If determined unsafe, the game – expected to be played on Saturday night – will be held at Bankwest Stadium instead.

The NRL has currently decided to withhold ticket sales for the match until the safety report is completed.

“Our number one priority is ensuring the safety of our players and fans. Unfortunately it could not be guaranteed when the schedule was confirmed,” Mr Greenberg said.

“We have given the local council and the Sea Eagles a period of grace of 24 hours in order to assess the safety of the venue before we release tickets.

“We have worked with Northern Beaches Council and the Sea Eagles to ensure the Club is given the opportunity to host a Final, while ensuring the safety of our supporters is paramount.”

A mass of projection is what I was calling out. Hilarious... I question your obsession with stadia and I’m a conspiracy theorist. Solid argument Ben.

Well that was a giant mass of projection. Never once did I make a reference to hazmat suits, and never once did I crow about Parramatta holding Bankwest like a trophy. Bankwest was only built because of a joined effort by the Wanderers and the Eels; if only the Wanderers or only the Eels were playing out of Parramatta Stadium there's no way the stadium gets built. Either way, it doesn't matter. The council gave their report; the NRL gave the all clear; and Cronulla are headed to Lottoland. Oh and by the way, I could not possibly get any further behind the game.

Mate you’ve spent the better part of two days going on about a game you’re not going anywhere near.. you were even on another story this afternoon on about it. Oh and the hysterical mesethelioma outbreaks on the hill like Brookvale Oval was the Blue Sky Mine. Now I understand that Bankwest is the only trophy Parramatta have won in over 30 years but this obsession with grounds is unbearably smug. If you are football fan get behind the game.. it’s not just about the buildings it’s play in. By the way, the ground was passed fit this afternoon... looks like you may have jumped the gun with your calling in the hazmat suits

Both have issues with public transport and parking. Also limited seating.

Interesting that tiger's have 3-4 home grounds and chose to have it at Leichhardt. Maybe if it was played at ANZ or Bankwest they may have got an extra 10k.

Actually Gosford is probably easier to get to public transport. If it is moved I would like to think it would be Manly"s choice. Bankwest probably suits Cronulla. Bottom line is that the suburban grounds probably aren't up to scratch. Interesting last Friday night was Geelongs home match but they (afl )moved it to MCG.

Fair point, Albo. There's a massive difference between a long wait for the bathroom and developing mesothelioma. Pity some people (Exhibit A - Tom G) would rather spout rubbish about imaginary conspiracies against Manly than realise how big a problem asbestos traces can be.

Probably remnants of the “silvertails ” pinching all those “fibro’s” from Western Suburbs back in the early 80’s !

Not really . One has some parking problems and queues for the toilets, the other may well have asbestos fibres ( if reports are fair dinkum) and the associated serious health issues for fans ?

Shark Park, Kogarah, Wollongong, Campbelltown, Penrith, Leichardt, Brookvale, all great venues. But that reminds me of a joke my mate who's a Dragons fan. "What do you call 17 blokes sitting at the pub watching the NRL finals series? The Dragons!'' Boom Tch!

I was thinking the same thing Randy. I'd be concerned about the SCG/Moore Park/Sydney Showgrounds area after all the work (pre-1980) done (and pulled down) in that part of Sydney over the decades. Maybe they should test that area as well?

Ben Lewis and Christo the Daddyo must be the Holmes and Watson of the roar world with their takedown of The Insider and his claims of losing thousands if Many don't play at Brookie. Excellent work Holmes! And you can put that in your pipe and smoke it, The Insider. But it is BS!

You might get to use Parra Stadium again this week, if you're lucky. You're welcome.

I wouldn't go that far; I saw a few reports of patrons at Leichhardt complaining about the lack of decent facilities and the discomfort of being crammed together as much as they were. I wouldn't like to see finals games played at Leichhardt either; for the same reason. Neither ground is up to the standard of venue required for finals games.
