Scott McLaughlin wins 2019 Bathurst 1000

By Scott Pryde / Expert

Scott McLaughlin has won the 2019 Bathurst 1000, his first win in the event, in dramatic circumstances on Sunday afternoon.

At one point, it looked like the race would finish under a yellow card, however, things were cleared in time for a one-lap dash around the mountain, with Scott McLaughlin managing to hold off the charge of Shane Van Gisbergen on cold tyres.

That came after a caution with just three laps to go, which meant all strategy and fuel conservation was thrown out the window.

A safety car about 26 laps from home triggered a mad dash into the pit lane, but being short of the critical lap on fuel numbers, it meant it was either maximum conservation or go crazy with a splash and dash before the finish line.

Jamie Whincup attempted to go with the second option, but with more crashes and incidents, it meant he got caught in fourth after pitting, and was unable to bridge the gap.

In the end, the fastest car on the day won, even if not without plenty of headaches and nerves on the way at the Dick Johnson Racing garage, who haven’t won Bathurst since 1994.

The carnage in the final 60 laps followed the first 100 laps of almost clean, green flag running, bar the crash of Tim Slade on the opening lap of the race at the top of the mountain, which followed an already delayed start.

The win for McLaughlin allows him to expand his already large lead in the championship over Van Gisbergen, with Supercars now turning their attention to the rest of the endurance races on the Gold Coast and at Sandown.

Explain how that affected the result? Whincup had terrible fuel economy and had to re pit for more fuel.... ended up in forth...They should have put tyres on as Lownes said

Anon they were under a safety car.....3 more seconds wouldnt have made a scrap of difference...Craig lownes said they should have changed tyres after the race...

Whincup & Scotty pitted on the 26 laps to go Saftey Car. Whincup was race leader. Whincup pitted and pulled out just in front of the pack (safety car was finished) Scotty pulled out 2 cars behind Whincup..... had the pack not been held back so far he would have pulled out with significant traffic between the two!

The plan was to get him back out behind Whincup in 2nd. McLaughlin stalled coming out of the pits which cost time and put him in 4th. Made is a two horse race rather than being stuck in the middle of the pack.

Changing tyres would have added more time.

I dont agree at all....Why didnt Red Bull put new tyres in Whincups car when they bought him in for fuel....he would have had a big advantage over those in front of him.......And the 2 safety cars bunched everyone up so there was no gaps to the next car

Why didnt Whincup hold up Scotty till Coultard caught up? looks like Red Bull stuffed up there as we know Shane was telling them the whole time what was going on....

You do know that Scotty was 1st in the queue not Fabian? Scott would not have been held up 1 second....Unless of course Van Gisbergin had parked in front of him like he did earlier in the race......Tander seems to think it allowed Shane to get in for fuel when they hadnt thought they could and he wanted to buy Story a beer for doing that.....

It changed it from a 6 or so car lottery to a 2 horse race where they had the edge. It made victory much, much more likely.

Absolutely Disgraceful!! ... Cannot beleive the blatancy of the Coulthard Cheating tactic. Also the rules state that under a saftey car a 5 car gap must be maintained ..... how can there not be repercussions for this??? .... With this cheat Mclaughlin came out 2 cars (in traffic) behind Whincup ... he would have been so much further behind.

Supercars had no choice. They may have penalised the team for cheating but they had to let them keep the benefit of their cheating in order to satisfy an old billionaire's need for the one motorsport trophy he hasn't got. And ensure said billionaire's cash remains in the sport for a few more years at least. And let's face they may have won fair and square even if they didn't cheat....

Clearly. No different to Renault having Piquet crash purpose to bring out the safety car for Alonso in Singapore 2008. This is as blatant an example of cheating as you'll get. Ryan Story was giggling and smirking as if to say how clever am I saying we had a overheating issue.

Disgraceful. Team should be massively fined and have their points stripped.

Pity about James Golding at the end. So impressed with his S5000 drive. Looks the goods to me. Congratulations to McLaughlin for the deserved win. Good race again.
