VOTE: Wallabies DIY Rugby World Cup player ratings vs England

By The Roar / Editor

The Wallabies’ 2019 Rugby World Cup dream is over, and we’re asking you, our readers, to help us rate the individual performances from the final match, a quarter-final loss to England.

If you’ve not done our DIY player ratings before, it’s a simple enough process. Hit up the form below and rate each player from 1 to 10 based on how well they played. We’ll keep track of the results and publish our findings tomorrow.

You’re free to rate players as you like with 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest – or toss an NA on any player not worth rating – but if you’re looking for a bit more detail than that, our handy little guide might help you make your judgments…

1. Had he not played, the team would have been better off. Negatively affected the performance of the side. May God have mercy on his soul.
2. Anonymous. Was he even there?
3. Did some things that you expect a player to be able to do, but did a whole bunch of other things that sucked.
4. Was passable in patches, but not up to standard in a squad of such depth.
5. Performed his role without anything really noticeable happening.
6. Good.
7. Pretty good, actually.
8. Very good.
9. Excellent.
10. Might as well have been John Eales.

Also, before you do your ratings, you might enjoy a squiz at the ratings so far from the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Help us put together the final numbers by voting below.

I would ask each of you passing judgements on the players to be cautious until we see how they perform under a new coach with real game plans and especially with respect to the backline which has not been the same from one game to the next......

I don't think its fair to Tate the players though they all deserve at least a nine for having to put up with that puck knuckle. Go listen to the press conference again and again just to remind yourself even if you had the slightest dout,he's on a different planet all along,....Tate is rate

just read another article about cheikia and his rein. the way the aussies have played... lots of passion not much intelligence with the game plan. i think its a good summary. the sad thing is we had the cattle (and cheikia deserves credit for building depth and skill levels) we just needed to vary the way we played depending on who we played. throwing the ball side to side play after play... game after game is predictable and leads to high turnovers. yes its attractive rugby... and the traditional rugby style of australia but it does not win games consistently with the current rules. ps. hats of to michael hooper. what a leader. 100% effort all the time.

Hooper was better than Pocock. Big tackles, big turnovers, huge work rate.

While this wasn't exactly the line-up I would have chosen, my problem wasn't with the players per se, although a couple of them were clearly off the pace. What really got to me was the sheer simple-mindedness of the game plan. Thinking back on Nick Bishop's analysis of Japan's plan of attack I realised that if you're counting on strike players to give you go forward and make breaks, even the most simple second-man play will give those players the space they need. Instead we just threw one-up passes when the defence was already in the receiver's face. On the occasions that the space was created for a runner it seemed to come as a surprise, and that runner was immediately isolated. This is something NZ does exceptionally well, they know that the second man (often BBBBB) is the target and just pour into the space behind him. We never seemed to be in position to secure the ruck, let alone receive an offload. Even with different selections or better performances our attack looked destined to fail against a decent rush defence.

My highest score was M.Koroibete with a 7, M.Hooper, D.Pocock and J.Petaia got a 6. The rest mostly a 5 as it wasn't their fault they had a dumb match plan. The "May god have mercy on his soul" squad were Genia (3), Beale (3) and M.Cheika (ZERO). I changed for CLL from a (3) to a (4) as I doubt if Mark Ella could have got better than a (5) with Genia's poor service. Congrats to M.Cheika, the first ever to score 0 in the Roar Ratings.
