Whitfield shuns free agency to sign monster extension with GWS

By The Roar / Editor

GWS superstar Lachie Whitfield has nipped one of 2020’s biggest contract sagas in the bud, signing a massive seven-year extension with the club that took him with pick no.1 in the 2012 draft.

The 25-year-old, who made his first All Australian side in 2018, was set to be a big part of Greater Western Sydney’s contract armageddon at the end of 2020, joining Jeremy Cameron, Zac Williams, Jeremy Finalyson, Aidan Corr and Sam Reid as players in need of a new deal.

But the Giants moved to end a potential season full of rumours and speculation, inking their star half-back to a deal that keeps him at the club until 2027.

Whitfield averaged 27 disposals, eight marks and four inside 50s per game in 2019. As well as being All Australian in 2018, Whitfield also won the club best and fairest that season.

The 133-gamer said, in the end, the decision to stay in Sydney was an easy one.

“I’ve known my future is in Sydney for a long time,” he said in the statement.

“I play for success and so being at the Giants is clearly the best option for me.

“As a club we’ve been in four finals in a row now and we’re a hungry group who continually drive each other to be better than the season before.

“This is an outstanding club with outstanding people and I’m excited to be here.”

Stephen Coniglio, Josh Kelly, Toby Greene, Jacob Hopper, Tim Taranto, Nick Haynes, Harry Himmelberg and Sam Taylor have all committed to the club in recent seasons.

Yeah but then I couldn't create a ridiculous high ground by pretending I didn't realise ;)

Of course, and if it didn't go on for an excessively ridiculous amount of time it wouldn't be a Macca/6x6 discussion which does bring out the best in us both haha

I think it is safe to say we both know what each is getting out of the interaction is the same as the other. :stoked:

I'm just entertaining myself here I wouldn't say I've been excessively engaged more just passing the hours with someone who seems to be doing the same.

A very very average one and we needn't go into what several studies have said about the correlation of insecurity with excessive emoji use Mr missionary.

"Cheers for the character assessment" - "And your (you're?) incredibly boring and lack wit," And what does that say about you that you engage me (apparently a witless bore) for "entertainment"? Surely anything would be more "enteraining" than a witless bore?

Not sure you know how an emoji works "An emoji is a visual representation of an emotion, object or symbol", their entire purpose it to "show".

You really do have an issue with personal responsibility - always someone else's fault.

You still yapping oh geez, that wasn't baiting that was making a joke at Carlton's expense, it you felt baited that's your issue to bear. Nah they don't but when I typed them and told my wife we both had a good laugh so personally was worth it, a strong marriage is one filled with laughter Macca can't be serious all the time hey unless you want to discuss the trump impeachment hearing or the Claremont case before the WA courts.

Cracka - I would think the first 5 forwards would be C Curnow, McKay, McGovern, Betts and Martin then the other 2 spots would be filled with players like Cuningham, Fisher, JSOS, Dow or Setterfield can't really see Newman being wedged in. As for Williamson down back - with Marchbank, Plowman Weitering, Jones, Simpson, SPS & Docherty taking the first 7 spots Willo is going to have to fight with Newman, Newnes and possibly Stoker to get a look in.

Sorry I forgot I was dealing with a person of such highbrow behaviour, anyway watching south park and giggling at how inappropriate it is as always, you need to have a laugh at how ludicrous you seeking me out wanting to continue a conversation to try and prove you're extra right is because I've enjoyed the mature nature of that behaviour it's been ultra impressive.

"Wasn’t baiting" - "GCS strategy of stuffing Carlton salary cap for two years was excellent." "God your like Cain Liddell in your list management thinking, lucky I’m no club champion Macca or you’d turf me like old jocks wouldn’t you." " now the way they’ve stuffed Carlton cap isn’t as impressive as the way Carlton stuffed Deluca or SOS for that matter, " Hmmm - don't really sound like comparisons to GCS or list managment strategies.

"continue the GCS discussion that had no relevance to gws" outside the obvious comparison of draft strategy's and the Giants recruiting being a great roadmap for the Suns to follow. It is amazing how you had absolutely no control over your own actions, the only way to counter a comparison between the Suns and the Giants and the initmation that your positions on the two teams list strategy is contradictory was to drag ludicrous Carlton topics into the discussion. Very mature.
