Confirmed: Souths officially sign Jai Arrow

By The Roar / Editor

One of the worst-kept secrets in rugby league has been confirmed today, with the South Sydney Rabbitohs confirming the signing of Gold Coast forward Jai Arrow on a four-year deal.

While the 24-year-old will play out this season with the Titans, he will cross to Redfern in time for the 2021 season on a deal that keeps him there until the end of 2024.

The Fairfield, Queensland native made his debut for the Brisbane Broncos in 2016, playing 24 matches for the club over two seasons before joining the Titans. Regarded as one of the best young forwards in the game, Arrow has played four State of Origin matches for Queensland over the last two seasons, while also making his debut appearance in the Prime Minister’s XIII last year.

Shane Richardson – South Sydney’s General Manager of Football – lauded Arrow for performing “at a consistently high level, no matter whether he’s playing in the NRL or in representative teams.”

“He has worked with Wayne (Bennett) previously at the Broncos and he has developed into a State of Origin player, but we see him being able to push for further honours in the green and gold in coming years and we couldn’t be happier that he will be pursuing those goals whilst playing his NRL football with Souths.

“During our discussions with him about football and life outside of football he has shown great maturity and a willingness to live by The Rabbitoh Way.

“He was chased by a number of NRL clubs but he has made the Rabbitohs his club of choice from 2021.

“We wish him the best of luck with the Titans for the coming season and we’re looking forward to him joining us for 2021. I am sure all of our Members and supporters are as well,” he said.

No mate, ir's all good. Nothing personal. I've never had a problem with the Dragons or their supporters except for Adam and I've had enough of his continued unprovoked sniping jibes at the Rabbitohs. I've posted plenty of times in the past (under other profiles) giving the Dragons their due and included them alongside Souths as one of the old clubs with a proud history. They need a new coach though and a set spine before things will change for the better though IMO.

He bombed at Origin level because he was playing for a club as a mercenary and not the club where his heart actually was So where does Cody want to be?

Dylan Walker played for Australia while at the Rabbitohs and then for NSW after having played half a dozen games or less for Manly. He was selected on his form for Souths and because he was an Australian incumbent centre. He bombed at Origin level because he was playing for a club as a mercenary and not the club where his heart actually was.

Nat get your facts straight mate. Roberts took a cut in salary and asked the NRL to register the lower figure contract on compassionate grounds because he was studying at the University of QLD (what exactly I can only chuckle at). The NRL let him stay north of the border and the figure was $300K and less than what the Titans were paying him $350K. The Dragons were in a tug of war with Souths for Roberts but could only offer $400K due to salary cap pressure. Souths offered Roberts $500K, the market value the NRL had given him. Look up my previous profile posts mate. I've posted the links a number of times before.

All good points Tim Buck 2 but all 11 premierships came together in one hit and a few of them were highly controversial as well during that period. Very few came outside of that. Talking about refereeing "fixes" what about Johnny King being tackled and called held only to be allowed to get to his feet and score a try in the 1963 GF? John Hayes recalls the controversy of '63 Western Suburbs players claimed St George winger Johnny King was held before getting to his feet again and scoring a crucial try. It later led to claims by former Magpies prop Jack Gibson that Lawler stood to earn 600 pounds if the Dragons won. ...We beat the Dragons three times before the decider. The worst thing we probably did do was beating them in the last minute in the semi-final... https://www.weststigers.com.au/news/2013/04/12/john-hayes-recalls-the-controversy-of-63/ The Joy of Six: NRL grand final controversies 1963: Wests cry foul in the mud ...shrouded in even more controversy, all to do with the refereeing of Darcy Lawler. Before a ball was kicked Wests forward Jack Gibson is reported to have said to team-mate Noel Kelly, “We can’t win, Lawler has backed them.” Lawler had previously been accused of taking bribes and throwing matches... https://amp.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2014/sep/30/the-joy-of-six-nrl-grand-final-controversies Given that I think that throws question marks over the other 9 GFs during that period. Like I said, this was all aimed at Adam who can't stop sniping at the Rabbitohs.

Wasn't the Blue jumper the lure Bozo used to get him there. A knock on, a penalty in less game time than Cody when he repaid the favour. Chooks could use some depth in the centers, too bad Gagai is a winger.

Souths won most of their premierships when Sydney was much smaller and not many people lived in Hurstville, Bankstown and Parramatta. The eastern and northern suburbs were rugby havens and Souths had less competition because players had to play for the district they lived in. Most of the eastern suburbs are part of South Sydney so you're really a chook mate.

The 1955 premiership was Souths' fairy-tale win with Col Pearce, a Souths fan, refereeing the finals games. In the preliminary final against St-George the second half penalties were 15-2 to Souths. Ken Kearney asked the ref what one scrum penalty was for and was told "to show you who is boss". Have you ever wondered why Kearney was captain coach of St-George from 1953 to 1961 but not in 1956?

Already posted them for your perusal mate, Broncos and Souths offered pretty much the same, he chose Brisbane, or should I say coach. Such a close bond he's your $400k issue now.  Let me know how many covering tackles he gets for you this year? AJ will be earning his bucks at the back this year!!

Souths won most of their titles in the unlimited tackle but it was better than the 4 tackle rule (67-70) that became a game of scrums and their penalties. Every 4 tackles a scrum was put down or the attacking team would kick a 2 point field goal. Souths won on the back of scrum penalties and field goals. No wonder we have 1 point field goals and 6 tackles and 4 point tries.

The Australian teams were selected based on the performance of the players in the Sydney comp. In 1970 the touring Kangaroos played a game containing nine (9) Souths players so should we take those out of the equation?

That's true - Scott Prince did play some great footy for the Tigers - but he was just as good for the Titans. He certainly didn't play any worse for the Titans. Prince played 124 games for the Titans and 73 for the Tigers and if I recall the Titans played a bit of finals footy when he was there. I'd argue that James Roberts was brilliant for the Titans but hasn't reproduced that form for the Broncos or Souths - and Aiden Sezer was solid for the Raiders but not the dominant half he was for the Titans. Sezer appeared to have more responsibility at the Titans - including goal kicking duties - and he seemed to thrive on that. I reckon Tyrone Roberts has been a pretty useful pick up for the Titans as well.

It was reported in the media at the time by Richo that Souths had tabled a $500K offer for Roberts. Due to salary cap constraints the Dragons top offer was $400K. Try digging up stories from 3 or 4 years ago if you like. I have posted links to these in the past often enough.

How many times are you going to keep rolling out the Roberts example? 3 x in as many days! It's BS and you know that, I've shown you that. Souths didn't offer Roberts $500k, show me anywhere that figure was offered? If the NRL set Roberts at $500k way back then why is he still on $400k today and that was an upgrade.

In the LAST two years Souths have finished 3rd TWO years in a row. Where did the Dragons finish? I'd say THAT was pretty recent history wouldn't you? Only LAST season Souths defeated the "Claytons premiers", the Roosters, TWICE in the regular season before finishing 3rd on the ladder while the Dragons almost got the wooden spoon! Souths last won a premiership 5 years ago, the Dragons won their last premiership almost a decade ago. Taking the Dragons 11 straight premierships with a near full Australian side and an unlimited tackle rule out of the equation the Dragons have only won FOUR premierships in 100 years and Souths bookended that 11 premiership run winning 5 out of 6 premierships before that and 4 out of 5 immediately following. The St George Illawarra Steel Dragons have ONLY won ONE premiership... almost A DECADE ago! I'd call THAT Checkmate wouldn't you?   For the record, I've never had a problem with the Dragons or their supporters. Only you Adam. I'm tired of your constant, unprovoked sniping at the Rabbitohs and their supporters. Unless you want me to bury you again I suggest you change your tune.

A Rabbitohs fan using ancient history as a jibe. Hilarious. Most of your glory days were in the semi professional era. Since GF became mandatory your team has, what, 5 titles? Maybe. Saints have 14. Don't even bother

No Chris. It is NOT the same thing. Souths did not end up signing Sam Burgess for less than his market value but MORE. Folau's market value was set as $400K which was the Eels offer but they intended to only pay $150K for the first year and $550K for the second year of the contract. That is completely different. The Eels could have moved several players on to accommodate Folau, like Souths did for Burgess, but they CHOSE not to. The Rabbitohs were going to sign Burgess for the SAME value despite being out of the game for a year and down on form. They were FORCED to sign Burgess for $100K more only because clubs protested in the media. They did not protest however when the Roosters signed THREE marquee players in the same year in 2013 for less than their market value. Why? They also did not protest when the NRL back flipped and allowed the Broncos to sign James Roberts for $300K (less than he was on at the Titans) despite setting his market value at $500K. At the time the Rabbitohs had tabled a $500K offer (Roberts true market value) but the NRL allowed him to sigm for $200K less and again, no protests from the clubs. Why? In the end to offer Burgess his ABOVE market value contract as dictated by the NRL Souths had to move THREE players on (Dylan Walker, Chris McQueen and Ben Lowe). #Double Standards For Roosters Parramatta Eels ask permission to bend salary cap rules to sign Israel Folau The ARLC is looking to register Folau at $400,000 for next season... That would mean Parramatta's cap is increased to $5.4 million for next year but reduced by $400,000 - to $4.6 million - for 2014. A second option facing Parramatta is to shed up to $400,000 worth of talent, culling up to three players. It's believed the Eels were pushing to register Folau's contract for roughly $150,000 for the first year of his deal... https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/amp.heraldsun.com.au/sport/nrl/parramatta-eels-ask-permission-to-bend-salary-cap-rules-to-sign-israel-folau/news-story/03179ee8423acbe0b3e7b3a52ce04a42
