AFL officially confirms State of Origin match

By Stirling Coates / Editor

The AFL will play a one-off State of Origin-style match at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on Friday, February 28, with proceeds going towards bushfire relief in Australia.

The AFL and AFLPA have made a combined $2.5 million donation to bushfire relief, with additional funds raised throughout the game also set to get passed on.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan, AFLPA CEO Paul Marsh and AFLPA President Patrick Dangerfield made a joint announcement at the venue today, where Victoria will take on the ‘All-Stars’, a composite team made up of players from every other state and territory in just over a month. The match will be broadcast on Channel Seven, Fox Footy and Kayo Sports.

Damien Hardwick will coach Victoria, while John Longmire will coach the All-Stars. The player selection process is yet to be confirmed.

“Our industry is heartbroken by the devastation that the fires are causing around the country and our clubs and players have suggested a number of initiatives where we can support affected communities in the short and longer term as they deal with the aftermath of these fires,” said McLachlan.

“A game of footy can’t change what has happened but it is a way for all of our clubs, our players and our fans to acknowledge the incredible sacrifice that so many have made in battling the fires and to support those communities that have been impacted by the bushfires.”

“It was an immediate ‘yes’ when the State of Origin concept was put to players by the AFLPA. We, like everyone, are heartbroken and desperate to help,” said Dangerfield.

“We’re committed to putting on a great event for fans and hopefully raise a significant amount of money.

“In addition to committing to this match, we’re proud to be able to make a $250,000 donation on behalf of all male and female players, which will be split amongst various charities to support those affected.”

While State of Origin matches used to be a regular fixture in the AFL season between 1977 and 1999, waning interest and club dissatisfaction with losing players to injury saw the venture canned before the turn of the millenium.

Most recently, a one-off Hall of Fame tribute match was played in 2008 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the game. Victoria defeated the ‘Dream Team’ by 17 points in a highly entertaining affair at the MCG.

Will only be like EJ Whitten legends game. Basically non contact entertainment. It won't have the same meaning as the early origin games when SA and WA were out to prove a point. Nevertheless could be entertaining and the cause is worthwhile.

Yes IAP. Land mismanagement appears to be such a big factor but so many just want to lay it all on "climate change". I'm going to start reading Joanne Nova's site.

Yes Jonboy, including India; the country that will shortly be the most populated on the planet! I've read that over 300 million are still not connected to the grid according to the Institute For Energy Research in July 2017. Wait till they start being connected.

I don't know which political parties were in power or when people may have or may not have begun complaining about the current bushfire/land management protocols when they were implemented. What I do know is that some people who do appear to have detailed experience and knowledge regarding this subject (and may actually know what they are talking about) are definitely raising concerns now. At the very least,we should be keeping an open mind about such things before shouting from the roof tops 'It's all climate change".

Here we have other important people who mention green tape:- Sydney Morning Herald By Tim Barlass – 9th December 2019 Fire captain Brian Williams, 73, vice-president of the Volunteer Fire Fighters Association, supports the prescribed burn argument. He spoke after a 12-hour night shift fighting the Three Mile fire burning north-east of Wiseman’s Ferry. Mr Williams said: “The hazard-approval process is what is stuffing the whole process. “It is bogged down by green [environmental] and red tape which makes getting approval for a prescribed burn a very slow and complex process. “They have introduced a system that makes it virtually impossible to manage the bush in a sustainable way. I am just one of thousands of volunteers out there who are frustrated.” Here’s parts of Vic Jurkis’ open letter to the Prime Minister on online opinion.com 19th Nov 2019- Vic Jurskis has been a forester for 40 years. He has published extensively in academic journals. He is the author of Firestick Ecology: fairdinkum science in plain English (Connor Court, 2015). A fellow of the Institute of Foresters of Australia, the body representing more than 1200 forestry professionals “People are losing their lives, and we are experiencing unprecedented environmental, social and economic destruction as a result of bad politics… Aborigines arrived about 65,000 years ago and established the world's most durable culture. They maintained healthy and safe landscapes (including the rich biodiversity that greeted Europeans) across Australia through 40,000 years of sometimes extreme climate change….The current weather and wildfire situation is neither unprecedented nor unexpected. around Sydney and Parramatta with green branches, losing only one hut and a few gardens and fences in Sydney, and a hut, outbuildings and a stack of Our National Capital was incinerated in 2003 and our "Nation Charred" after fire spotted ….The House of Reps Inquiry received evidence from experienced land managers right across Australia, and rediscovered the simple answer that we need to restore mild fire across the landscape. However, the land management and emergency services bureaucracies in some eastern states boycotted the Inquiry, and the Green member put in a dissenting report. This set the scene for the COAG Inquiry whereby the emergency services bureaucrats and junk scientists swept traditional knowledge, history, commonsense and pragmatic science under the table. They put 'education', disaster warnings and evacuations in place of sensible management. This paved the way for ongoing disasters and ever-increasing funding of their bailiwicks…. The High Court's Mabo decision should have set the scene for responsible ……How many more Inquiries and Royal Commissions do we need, to wake up to what Aboriginal people learnt 60,000 years ago, European explorers learnt two centuries ago and foresters relearnt 50 years ago? Instead of wasting billions of dollars on ineffective waterbombers, silly computer models and hugely expensive emergency bureaucracies which are rewarded with increased funding after every disaster, we need only spend a miniscule fraction on reinstating frequent mild fire and safe and healthy landscapes.” And,here we have a protest that I found on JoanneNova’s website which was from an ABC Gippsland Vic article:- Protesters stopped a prescribed burn from going ahead at Nowa Nowa. Apparently the protesters didn’t want animals to die and CO2 to be released. There is so much information for anyone who wants to look.

WA pales into significant's to the East Coast problems with Land management and Green Policies. Hence the major problems that have built up over the years in the east.

Everyone is aware prescribing burns needs certain conditions.....but stopping them just because the city people don't like the smoke. This is a regular call from the city based greens.

Do you realise prescribed burning needs certain condition? Also if your state government has reduced funds allocated then protest, write letters, organise meetings of like minded don't blame green tape blah blah, a liberal government under Barnett in WA tried to reduce money spent on winter burning and the electorate quickly said you idiot and the burns remained, for all the concern ppl apparently had over fuel loads they seem to have complained alot with no lobbying of their members of government which classically in the bush are LNP so should hopefully be understanding that if constituents are unhappy their jobs are on the line. That's how you make things happen in a democracy boys because it's the one system of government where you can force change.

Nah I'm not you'll find the majority serve the LNP it just appeals to your bias, only use ABC for its news channel and Leigh sales ability to hold all sides of politics to account including the factions that excists in all parties and the drum is an excellent panel program that engages all concerned parties in subjects being covered ie Amanda Vanstone isn't ex labor is she. As you apparently don't watch or listen to ABC your view of it isn't current or likely correct.

It is pointless the Federal Govt. calling another RC states like Victoria ignore the findings, The states refuse to let property owners clear land to protect themselves not even roads for fire trucks. Labor/Green insanity.......... but idiots are blaming Morrison.

This is why the Federal govt.calling another RC is pointless when the states won't implement the findings, they will not allow owners to clear land on there property even allow breaks for firetrucks it is insane. And idiots suggesting it is Morrison's fault is the last straw.

Jane Marwick was a FM morning radio star who works for stations that are aligned to the lib/national pov so any guests will be biased and sought for that bias by the producer (the person who actually get the guests and writes the questions). She did own a wonderful organic and environmentally sustainable eatery with her chef sister on Napoleon street in Cottesloe during the 90s called marwicks which served excellent baguettes and rainforest sustainable coffee, came from a a farming family (sheep/wheat) so had some strong beliefs on the climate and increased drought situations.
