The ten players your team can least afford to lose: Gold Coast Suns

By Doran Smith / Roar Guru

The Gold Coast Suns finished the 2019 AFL season on the bottom of the ladder.

Selecting the ten players that they could least afford to lose was still a challenging exercise as they have some good ones. I haven’t included first-year players as it was too difficult to judge them on one game.

10. Darcy Macpherson
Macpherson played every game last season and averaged 18.64 disposals per game. He finished the 2019 AFL season third in the Gold Coast Suns’ best and fairest.

9. Brayden Fiorini
Fiorini finished fifth in the 2019 Gold Coast Suns’ best and fairest. Fiorini played a total of 21 games with an average of 25.43 disposals per game. He is a part of the Suns’ leadership group for season 2020.

8. Anthony Miles
Miles finished seventh in the 2019 Gold Coast Suns’ best and fairest, averaging 21.41 disposals in 17 games, which clearly indicates his importance to the team.

7. Sam Collins
Collins was added to the Gold Coast Suns’ leadership group because he is a quality defender and a key player.

6. Lachie Weller
Weller averaged 22.06 disposals in 2019 in the 17 games that he played and he has a lot of ability.

5. Hugh Greenwood
Greenwood played well for the Gold Coast Suns in Round 1 of 2020 against the Port Adelaide Power.

4. Jarrod Harbrow
Harbrow provides plenty of run out of defence. Harbrow finished the 2019 season fourth in the Gold Coast Suns’ best and fairest. Harbrow averaged 18.9 disposals per game in 2019.

3. Jarrod Witts
Witts is the number one ruckman for the Gold Coast Suns. Witts won the 2019 Gold Coast Suns’ best and fairest. He is an underrated player because of the Suns’ lowly ladder position in 2019.

2. David Swallow
Swallow finished second in the Gold Coast Suns’ best and fairest in 2019. Swallow leads from the front; he is a quality player that leads by example.

1. Brandon Ellis
Ellis won a premiership with the Richmond Tigers in season 2019. He has a long-term contract, five years to be exact, which shows how important he is to the Suns in 2020.

Miles would be in the Gold Coast Suns best 22; they missed him in Round 1 of Season 2020.

Rejecting players after 1 game is normally not your strong suit Doran (see Jacob Townsend , Essendon Saviour after 3 goal start to 2020). But if you are playing THAT card, you HAVE to declare the card where if a player has played for Richmond in the last 4 years - they are immediately in the team’s top 10 cannot lose category. That is the only way Anthony Miles finishes number 7 in a list of ten not including Lukosis, Rankine and King( plus Rowell & Anderson) . Blind Freddy would put those 5 players in the top ten of players NOT to lose. Rankine could be the only one you may leave out due to non playing injury but just barely. Miles has been reliable and given value but Gold Coast in hindsight may have delisted him instead of Jarryd Lyons in the previous year. Leaving out Day and Thompson ahead of Collins because he is in leadership and a quality player means very different things at different clubs. Especially when most of quality on this list is under 21. Age and being reliable may have had something to do with leadership position, not in 10 best or 10 least want to lose players lists. The afore mentioned players are the backbone of the defence where Collins was recruited due to injuries . Having Brandon Ellis on the top of your list is ....... breath taking. Being on the fringe of a premiership team going forward does not make you most valuable player at another club, or even in top 10 but Ellis and Townsend have achieved these goals after 1 game. Remarkable . He would be in my top 10, probably number 9.

Rankine, King, Lukosius would be important to the Suns

Yeah those contract extensions were predicated on a lot more money for them haha. But I take your point while I don’t think the suns have turned a corner yet they are moving in the right direction. Truth is I think GWS and the suns were introduced to close to one another

Two obvious mistakes, in my opinion. Miles is not even in the best 22 at the moment. Thompson is a key defender and Suns missed him terribly the last year especially after Collins and Hombsh got injured. The only question is in what form he comes back from ACL.

Max King plays for St Kilda, not the Suns. His twin, Ben, signed a 2 year Contract extension in 2019 with the Suns. As did Jack Lukosius. As did Izak Rankine. Max will hopefully be a Sun once he comes out of contract with the Saints. I mean, it's not as if he is ever gonna play finals footy with the Saints :)))

So I would argue this a bit differently, I don’t think the suns can afford to lose any of their draft picks like max king, and lukosius. I agree with some of the selections (macpherson is criminally under rated by the wider AFL community) but I think the suns need to start showing that they can keep their players
