SANFL bans player payments to survive

By News / Wire

One of Australia’s premier state-based football competitions – the SANFL – hopes to safeguard its future by operating as an amateur league this year.

Players, coaches and umpires will all work without payment under a plan designed to ensure the SANFL and its eight stand-alone clubs survive the coronavirus-inflicted financial crisis.

The league’s key figures will, however, receive the federal government’s JobKeeper package.

SANFL chief executive Jake Parkinson told ABC Grandstand on Sunday the clubs could not afford to have a season if players and officials were to receive their normal payments.

“Clubs are just not in a position to make payments to players right across all of our eight clubs,” Parkinson said.

“From the very beginning we’ve said we are looking to come through all of this with the SANFL and the SANFL clubs able to compete for another 143 years.

“That’s been the priority and the players said, ‘Well, look, we want a season and if that means we go back on the ground and we don’t receive payment, then that’s what we’ll do’.

“That’s been the vast majority of the players who’ve been in that position.”

The SANFL’s return-to-play plan involves players resuming non-contact training from May 18 in groups of up to ten.

The return date for the season to start is yet to be determined, but crowds are considered a possibility at matches later in the year.

Other premier state leagues, including the VFL and WAFL, are in serious doubt to return this year.

Some historic state-league clubs, such as East Fremantle and Port Melbourne, have launched fundraising initiatives in attempts to ensure their survival beyond this year.

Juniors wear bands in other states too you know. Hardly the be all and end all of providing superior development anyway.

I think State football must have meant more to you I used to watch hoping no Geelong player got injured. The SANFL, Wafl and Vfl still operate under the pre SOO rules where it's competition versus competition.Im a proud VIC but I honestly believe footy development is better in WA and SA as reflected by higher drafted players per capita. When Geelong were called the handbaggers I wanted to punch on with anyone who yelled it out so I get your angst.Winners are grinners so if Port or the Crows can win a few flags out the window go the bad experiences replaced by the pride of having been part of an era of pure joy.

No, l don't begrudge em getting a better income. However l do begrudge Vic for forcing them to play for them because that was the only way they were going to get rep duty. SOO put Vic back in its place as SA & WA have equal amount of wins as Vic and those two did it with less cattle. I'd love to see SA & NT secede with WA and see "Australia" never win a game of International Aussie Rules!

Barry Robran may have been the greatest player of all time and that thug you refer to used to live near me so I agree with you.In those five years when Geelong had a winning rate of about 85 % it was a buzz only the grand final defeat hurt in that time .Even the 2010 prelim didn't bother me because I thought everything has to end.Yes the Old Vfl took SA players but they could have followed Robran example and stayed.Do you begrudge a soccer or basketball player for leaving Adelaide in.search of better opportunities

Are you for real Pedro? Referring to Box Hill indicates a Vfl side.As for the typing slower comment you are half an hour behind so that makes sense.Im not Vicboo I'm boo. It's really sad how hung up you are on VIC bashing.Your club has won the most senior premierships in the country and for the mantra " we exist to win premierships" to be replicated at the highest level an attitudinal change has to occur.Stay in the past with the kick a VIC mentality which was justified a generation ago or find ways to help your clubbecome what there nickname suggest - the power.It.happened at Geelong those three flags and continued finals performances were after cultural changes including four players from the rookie list that won premierships .

lol Victoria and south Australia state of orgin games where legendary back in the day many of my best mates are Victorians but the banter continues to this day, will admit many south aussie personalities eg cornes kg rowey etc go over the top as do a lot on social media in regards to so and so playing x amount of games on the mcg in a row ,I personally don't give a toss who plays where or when,if you cant win on the road at all you aint playing finals anyway,to me it gives me greater satisfaction beating vic sides in Melbourne or west coast over there, total over reaction in most cases, the Richmond 8 games in a row thing I didn't know about ,that shouldn't happen though, should be able to put together a better fixture together than that, especially knowing Richmond are going to be a good side,my only gripe about the AFL call it vic bashing if you like is why do Richmond /carlton always open the season, would it be shock horror if west coast played Collingwood in perth on that Thursday night move the Richmond /carlton game to Friday or Saturday night, have a port /Adelaide showdown to open the season, thats what truly pisses me off just share fixtures change it up, queens birthday games etc have it different every year, unfortunately money comes first in most instances,im actually a port man and having eddie maquire telling us we cant wear our traditional magpies guernsey, really who cares everyone knows what side is what would it be terrible if port wore there normal stripe at home and changed to the stripe they used know for away games,i mean really, these are just minor things that should be allowed but AFL don't want to change with the times

Not really a contradiction VicBoo - From the Box Hill website "The Box Hill Hawks Football Club was formed in 2000 after an alliance between AFL glamour club Hawthorn and traditional VFA/VFL club the Box Hill Mustangs". As you can see the Box Hill Hawks are a 2nd tier AFL side. Werribee for example are a 2nd tier Australian Rules team with no direct affiliation with an AFL club! I am typing slower for you: AFL is a competition. It is limited to 18 clubs at the moment (and hopefully less in the future). Australian Rules is the game that they (and others) play.

How about Victoria having South Australians, West Australians & Tasmanians playing on Victorian rep sides, pre SOO, and beating South Australia, West Australia & Tasmania. And then Victoria claiming they were the best while using the best of 4 states. Against 3 states who were/are smaller, in population, without access to their best? Or the Thug of the Century maiming the the knee of arguably the greatest Aussie Rules player, ever, in 1974 at the SCG with the help of Bernie Quinlan. Leigh Mathews is a gutless reprobate. He obviously saw what Robran had done to Carlton. Just a few incidences that are indelibly stamped in my mind. And as South Australia’s greatest sportsmen said to his grandson about a possible ascension to the the Captaincy of the Australian Cricket team, “Whatever you do, don’t captain like a Victorian!”

Rowdy, maybe you have angst because your brother supports a Victorian team nothing wrong with being parochial, even though I'm not from Geelong my favourite thing about supporting them is our home ground has so few opposition supporters.Frankly, I don't get SA attitude to VIC Footy .Adelaide is a great place and it could be the top footy town in terms of performance in the country.

Rowdy, where is the arrogance in what I have said.I consider the SANFL the second highest standard of football in the country as your team's still have some relevance to there communities.Unlike the VFL which has hijacked the old VFA and taken the local out of community teams.Junior development in SA IMO is superior to Victoria as I have been told juniors to a certain age wear bands designating the part of the ground there playing in.

Box Hill are Vfl so you contradicted yourself Pedro. The AFL is the top level then state leagues and in Victoria A grade amateurs are the next level. Why do so many South Australia's continue VIC bashing? West Australian don't seem too.Your issue should be with the powers that be in your home state for .entering a national competition and any local player who chooses to play at the highest level.

"second tier AFL competitions"? Huh - do you mean Box Hill and the like or do you mean 2nd tier Australian Rules comps like the SANFL, VFL and WAFL? Stop the hijacking of the game by the AFL (it is a competition name, not the sport).

There wouldnt be any local/country footy clubs in a any position to pay players for the 2020 year. Clubs have fixed costs that haven't disappeared and without crowds at games many will struggle to survive.

If the second tier AFL competitions cannot pay players that will probably filter through to all levels of footy below the top level .This will probably be the death knell for local footy particularly in the country. Many good players travel to the country to play because of better money .Why would they give up a Saturday at least and training time for nothing when particularly for tradesmen they could be working.
