Roosters coach urges NRL to rethink rule changes

Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson can see merits in NRL rule change but wants it to be stress-tested before it’s brought into first grade.

Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson has cautioned the ARL Commission over ratifying significant ruck changes this week during the most critical time in NRL history.

The three-time premiership winner can see merits in scrapping ruck penalties to award a repeat set, but believes it needs to be stress-tested in the lower grades before getting the approval for the NRL.

“There’s real benefit in people infringing and having the fatigue come into it … It’s worth having a look at,” he told Fox Sports on Tuesday night.

“Not in one of the most critical times for our sport, in the history of our sport, we’re about to go into new eyeballs for the first time in decades.

“We’re about to go to some clean air space, we know the product well, it’s a great product, so let’s get it out there in its current form.”

Robinson was part of a competitions committee that included administrators, players, coaches and referees to discuss the merits of reverting to one referee as well as the ruck change when the competition resumes on May 28.

The idea to scrap the two-referee system was first put to Project Apollo on Friday as a cost-saving strategy, coupled with the six again rule change to help speed up the ruck.

However, Robinson said there was almost no support for it with the season set to start in two weeks.

Changes to the ruck in particular, he says, need to be carefully tested.

“I’m actually a fan of trialling this. I’d like to see 50 games of a lower competition in Canterbury Cup or under-20s played in that way because if you affect the ruck in our game, it’s the biggest area in our game, you’re going to affect the fabric of our game,” he said.

“The need for having a discussion about some of those things is clear.”

Robinson is the latest to hit out at the proposed move, however, it’s understood the ARL Commission will push ahead with the changes in a meeting this week.

Agree with Robinson points. Regardless of the merits of the changes this is not the time for it.

Also, to be fair, I think Keary actually visited Bondi beach once in 2015.

Also, Cooper Cronk's dad and uncles played for Bondi United. His dad is an Easts fanatic. So we'll claim him as well.

Victor Radley - Roosters Junior Angus Crichton - went to school in Eastern Suburbs so we'll claim him Some played their first senior game with us or majority with us - eg Daniel Tupour, SST, JWH. Many came via our SG Ball/Harold Matts via Easts so I'd classify them as Easts juniors. Stick to the cricket Craig.

But what has happened season after season with trainers is not a loophole, rather rules limiting their presence simply not being enforced. The specific rules are listed on every second Tim Gore article. ;-)

I heard a stat that none of the premiership winning Roosters team have had a Roosters junior starting in them. Hard to believe if true

What was quite amusing, was that on the train after leaving the grand final, there was no mention of either of these alleged game deciding incidents , and the Raiders fans conceded that the Roosters defence was incredible and the difference between the two teams. It was only after the media convinced the sheeple that there was cause for protest against the melodramatic injustice of the result, that the incessant whining became overwhelming. But it made for great fun on the way out of Sydney the following day with the L on the forehead as the universal comeback to any sulking Raiders fans bleating about injustice at the airport. And it continues even today .

Agree John. If that trainer incident had been the othe way around, it wouldn't have even been mentioned. Maybe once. It's great being an Easts fan these days. Go EASTS!

Agree. A threepeat WOULD be nice. I wonder how that would be received by supporters of a team that has enjoyed so many advantages over 15 other sides yet can't crack it for a GF win since 2006. On the subject of the GF incident in 2019 involving the Roosters trainer, had the roles been reversed & Canberra went on to win there would be no sympathy for the Roosters. The anti Roosters sentiment in Brisbane made Ben Hunt's dropped ball in the 2015 GF all the more enjoyable.

@ Bacon & Eggs Don't forget, the Canberra trainer was on the field on the previous set. Just sayin...

The saltiness amongst the Roosters-haters is very salty indeed. The footy must be very close. Bring on the Threepeat Easts! 'Here comes the Roosters, the best you've ever seen'....

"Understand what I’m referring to Broncos supporters?" Well I'm not a Bronco's supporter JA however I AM aware of one particular on-field trainer who was recently involved in a grand final incident which MAY have been a turning point in the game. It also resulted in the NRL creating additional new rules for ALL on-field trainers - I wonder which teams' on-field trainer was involved in this incident? (Glass houses stones etc) ;)

All rules have loopholes. "Trainers" spending excessive periods of time on the field. Directing the defence similar to Cooper Cronk in the 2018 GF except he was named in the squad. Understand what I'm referring to Broncos supporters? If the Roosters would have had an ex player like Langer continually on the field imagine the criticism they would attract on this site. Glass houses stones etc.

What exactly is the "fabric of the game" anyway? I am sick of hearing it brought up as a reason not to do something. Speeding up the ruck is a good thing. I am sick of the lying around and intentional penalties to re set the defence. Get on with the game. 6 again will hopefully assist with this.
