Morris twins to decide on NRL future

By Laine Clark / Wire

Sibling rivalry may have sparked the sparkling NRL form of Josh and Brett Morris that Sydney Roosters teammate James Tedesco says is worthy of a NSW recall.

But Brett Morris insists his twin won’t be a factor when he mulls over his future in the coming weeks, conceding one may play on in 2021 if the other decides to retire.

The veterans have been sensational since Josh Morris made the move from Cronulla this season, reuniting the brothers for the first time since their Canterbury days ended in 2018.

“If I didn’t have a twin brother I probably wouldn’t be half the player I am; we’ve pushed each other our whole lives,” centre Josh Morris said on Sunday.

Winger Brett Morris added: “We always have that friendly rivalry.

“If I see him do something I want to do something better and vice versa.

“It definitely helps having him in the same team pushing each other to be our best.”

Now 33, the off-contract brothers have agreed to make a decision on their respective futures in the next six weeks.

But the siblings insist they are not a “package deal”.

“We are both individuals,” Brett Morris said.

“We have different motivations as to why we play rugby league and different bodies with the injuries that we have had throughout our careers.

“It is an individual decision. It is not a package deal.”

Josh Morris said he would be listening to his body rather than his brother when he decides his future.

“Mentally I feel pretty good but it’s more the physical toll it takes each week,” he said.

“I will probably make a decision in the next four to six weeks, see how the body is feeling.”

Tedesco marvelled at their longevity, saying the pair could still hold their own in the NSW side based on their form.

Josh (15 Origins, six Tests) and Brett (15 Origins, 18 Tests) have both retired from representative football.

“They are probably playing as well as they did at the start of their careers,” Tedesco said.

“I am sure if they got the (NSW) call-up they would have a crack and do a good job like they have every time they have played for NSW.”

But Brett Morris was quick to quash any Origin talk.

“I am well and truly retired from rep footy,” he said.

Steve because the Roosters gave their Father Slippery a chance at the end of his career. Steve Morris played 67 games with the Roosters before a season or two in England to top up the bank account. The nothing to see is the fact that the Roosters are in fact under the cap by almost 400 grand. You only have to pay overs if you are desperate & dateless. Professional outfits like the Roosters & the Storm attract players not just for the money but because they can be successful and have a pretty good chance of getting to a grand final.

Great players. Not sure how the Roosters managed to snag 2 International/Origin reps for 275K each though. Notional value anyone? Na of course not..its the Roosters lol. Nothing to see here.

These 2 blokes at 33 years of age are putting a lot of blokes around the NRL to shame when it comes to having a real dig when they get on the paddock. There are a lot of blokes around the NRL on far grater money than these 2 are getting and are on cruise control & in some cases have been for a couple of seasons. Love watching the Morris boys play with so much determination and skill. Steve is rightly proud of his sons achievements as he also played 67 games for the Roosters

John: Always a hater in the crowd, well guess you do not follow the NRL Audit process very closely do you, for the Sydney Roosters are almost $400,000 under the salary cap for 2020. Now that is the same audit process that all clubs are subject to. BTW all 3rd party deals also have to be registered and funnily enough the roosters are about 4-5 th on the list when it comes to 3rd Party arrangements. It would appear that the Broncos are top of the tree in that regard and a fat lot that is doing them.

So how about just one of them signs and they take it in turns to play? That way they halve their workload.

Individually and as a package the Morris twins are a credit to the game, to themselves and to their families. Rugby League will be the loser when they call time on their careers.

Would love to seem them stay on for another year and kill it if for no other reason than to shove it up the rest of the comp about how smart we as a club are.
