Brad Fittler considers change for Origin II

By News / Wire

NSW coach Brad Fittler is set to seek advice before naming a 21-man squad on Friday to take on Queensland in State of Origin II in Sydney on Wednesday night.

Changes have already been flagged after second-rower Cameron Murray suffered a hamstring injury that will rule him out for the series.

However, question marks remain over a number of positions ahead of 21-man squads being named on Friday afternoon.

And after an 18-14 loss in Adelaide, Fittler is unsure of his best 17.

“It was a totally different scenario, especially having players come in from grand finals and trying to work all that out,” he said on Thursday.

“I feel like I’ve learnt a lot from that as well which is incredibly interesting, having teams fall out late in the season and having people come in at later stages.

“We live and learn.”

Jack Wighton is expected to be fit to play Game 2 at ANZ Stadium on Wednesday, while skipper Boyd Cordner will need to pass concussion protocols following his HIA on Wednesday night.

The coach is understood to be weighing up whether to name him to play next week.

There are growing concerns for the captain who has suffered a number of concussions this season but Fittler said he would speak to Cordner and listen to advice from medical staff.

The halves combination of Nathan Cleary and Luke Keary is also under consideration following calls to hand Cody Walker the No.6 jersey.

NSW legend Andrew Johns questioned Keary’s defence and called for Walker to play five-eighth with Ryan Papenhuyzen added to the bench as a utility.

But after a bruising initial clash, Fittler is more concerned about the health of the squad going into a short turnaround to keep the series alive.

“We’ll just check on the health of everyone, a lot of players don’t know they have injuries…They’re tough people,” he said.

“We’ll sit down with the doctor and the staff and get a plan together.”

I think Jurbo can do the job on the left edge. If Cordner is rested, and I beleive he should be, I'd have Jurbo as captain, and he'll be able play more minutes on the edge than at lock. Yeo can rotate with Finucane. I don't think Keary has been in any sort of form for a few games now, and he certainly didn't aim up in game 1. Walker gets a run.

I'm looking at the game, not the score. A lot of teams get a gimme at the end.

Jurbo on an edge? Nah, I'd rotate him with Fineucan. You're going to do a 'Walker' on Keary? Walker wasn't playing in the halves on Wednesday, he was given a roving commission. I don't think you can hand him that total responsibility of having the team play off him. Oh, it is sweet. We had to read 10 days of diatribe from NSW about how this was going to pan out. Now we get to watch you all feast on each other and tell you where you're going wrong in the process.

Nat, I know and understand that you're still excited after game 1, but losing by a couple of goals could hardly be classified as a schooling.

It's only training if they take a lesson from it. NSW copped another schooling, there is a difference.

I hope that the number reported is incorrect. But yes, if it's 5 he should have been sitting out for a long time. My concern is that he looks to have had 3 head knocks in his last 3 games. Even if they haven't resulted in failing the HIA, one has to wonder how seriously we can take the protocols

I agree. Like last year NSW lost game 1 by exactly the same 14-18 scoreline, and still went on to win the series going back to back. This week QLD scored 3 tries all off 3 NSW errors. Cut out the errors and a NSW threepeat is still on the cards.

I hear Cordner has had 5 head injuries this year. That's a shocking amount and if he is allowed to play you really have to start asking questions if the HIA protocols are sufficient.

Hope he doesn't make any changes except for Finucane or Yeo coming in for Murray. All the talk is about how fantastic QLD were and how poor NSW were, yet the Blue's still almost won the game. If NSW can get close to their best they should have more than enough to beat QLD in game 2.

The Blues need to have Cody Walker running amok, playing footy and Keary needs to be put in the same (head) bin as Cordner.
