Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton has tested positive for the coronavirus and will miss this weekend’s Sakhir Grand Prix.

The seven-time world champion is in isolation after his positive result was announced on Tuesday morning.

“The FIA, Formula One and Mercedes Team can today confirm that during mandatory pre-race PRC testing for the Sakhir Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton has tested positive for COVID-19,” F1 said in a statement.

“In accordance with COVID-19 protocols, he is now isolating. All contacts have been declared. The procedures set out by the FIA and Formula One will ensure no wider impact on this weekend’s event.”

His Mercedes team said: “Apart from mild symptoms, he is otherwise fit and well.”

Yes well Stoffel Vandoorne was the ultimate flop in F1, like Kovallainen a while back they came in with huge expectations and delivered nought. Russell has shown what it takes.

Will be an interesting week behind the scenes. Both those lads would give their left nut for that drive.

Vandoorne and Esteban Gutierrez are both listed as Mercedes’ official test and reserve drivers for the 2020 season.

Not in the last 30 years Micko, but I do believe Jacky Ickx won some GPs back in the 70s.

I just looked him up, and saw he was Belgian (thought he was Dutch). Do you have any ideas of the last Belgian GP winner Jawad? Any recently? (last 30 years?)

I was mistaken, he actually Belgian (mind you technically Max is as well!).

Isn't he Dutch? Wouldn't that be ironic: Hamilton is out of an F1 GP and a Dutchman wins the race...but NOT Verstappen! :silly:

Is he the official reserve driver for Mercedes, or just one they could get a hold of?

It would certainly allows those who say "Hamilton isn't that good, anyone could win in that car" to gain a bit more traction.....

Oh dear, the thought and the fallout if Bottas did end up getting beaten by whoever replaces Hamilton...

James Allen posed the question about George Russell getting a run. Love it!!

I knew you would be all over it Jawad. So what happens if Stoffel beats Bottas home? What if he wins? Feel like the results this weekend might have a few implications career wise.

Stoffel Vandoorne will be travelling to Bahrain after finishing his Formula E testing for Mercedes, so one hopes that he gets the chance in that seat. Given too that he is one of Mercedes' reserve drivers.
