European rugby cups suspended over virus

By News / Wire

The European Rugby Champions Cup and Challenge Cup tournaments have been temporarily suspended after French authorities ruled that the risk of French Top 14 clubs taking part was too much of a risk.

Both rugby union competitions have been suspended with two rounds of group fixtures outstanding amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“Following a directive from the French authorities that the participation of TOP 14 clubs in the Heineken Champions Cup and Challenge Cup at the current time constitutes too great a public health risk, EPCR has no choice but to announce today that the 2020/21 tournaments are temporarily suspended,” European Professional Club Rugby said in a statement.

The Champions Cup and Challenge Cup feature top teams from across Europe’s rugby union leagues, including from England, France, Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Italy.

[edit: I didn’t bring the matter up in fact, I was replying to someone else] You have no idea what I do or don’t know. However your snide “Saint Jacinda” remark and propensity to hurl baseless personal insults give you away. Go on then, educate this ignorant hick from the colonies. I’m sure you have plenty of peer reviewed articles from reputable journals showing how demographics and geography made New Zealand’s twenty something deaths to date and the UK’s 100,000+ inevitable.

The point is you haven’t got the faintest idea about what you’re talking about. On a rugby blog you took it upon yourself to spout ignorant, uneducated nonsense about an incredibly complex global pandemic about which you clearly know the square root of sweet FA. Position on some sort of ‘political divide’ you’ve concocted in your head really has nothing to do with it.

Well, you're really showing your true colours here aren't you with your childish insults? All because you can't accept that someone from the other side of the political divide has done well on a particular issue while someone on your side has done badly. Obviously I'm not surprised - some people will grasp onto all sorts of theories that defend a leader who projects a world view they can relate to and attack anyone who disagrees. I wonder what the real Funbus would do?

Why don’t you stick to reading ‘Sheep-Shearing Weekly’, and let the grown-ups talk about serious issues, because you clearly don’t read anything of depth. You haven’t the faintest idea of the epidemiology of COVID; how statistics are collected, compiled, and presented, or, seemingly, anything else other than doe-eyed man-love for the ABs.

We could have shut it down in the UK, There are no excuses, if Germany and Spain shut everything the UK could have done it. I truly blame the government for this. It was totally preventable. We should have totally locked down the country hard and fast and stop all flights enforce international quarantine etc. We are an Island! The EUROSTAR was stopped when Europe went into lockdown. This surge isn’t the result of a virus mutating but decisions made six months ago with eat out to help out and four months ago with the schools returning in September which gave the virus a new pool of people within which it could incubate, mutate and contaminate. We didn't have to come to this stage, but here we are.

Hilarious. Fourth biggest death toll in the world and Boris' man blames demographics. Funny how all the worst four countries in the world have hard right nationalist leaders, what a coincidence...

No they couldn’t. You can shut down NZ in an afternoon. It’s the most isolated developed country on the planet, and a country of 5 million people. With the possible exception of Germany and Japan all developed countries have followed the trajectory shaped by their demographics; population density and geography - and Germany is suffering in this 2nd wave. Government policy has had little to do with it. If Boris Johnson had been PM of NZ you’d have had exactly the same result in NZ as under ‘Saint’ Jacinda.

You are entitled to your opinion but many scribes judged him as the best Aus rugby player 2020…You just seem very anti Hooper but at least we agree Cane was better than Hooper…

Its 2021 and there is definately an ugly head around...

How can he be the wallabies best player in 2020 when he was bollocked by Cane in every test? He is also a very very poor captain. Pocock ( the Pooper) was not here in 2020 and Hooper still failed. How`d that happen ? was it all the other backrowers fault we came last ? Samu Wilson Swinton Hanigan Wright Valentini etc etc Hooper is the problem, not them.

2019 RWC, the abs choke rears it ugly head.

I doubt Hooper fears the ABs....I doubt test players fear anyone...respect yes but not fear.....Hooper was the best player in Aus last year and whether that was a deserved award or not it does show that he is in the top few players in Aus rugby. I think the Pooper rubbish harmed his reputation in Aus as many wanted pocock at 7 but that wasnt Hooper doing that...that was the coaching staff...

Jacko Piru explained it perfectly. "The abs do not fear Hooper quite the opposite ".

BackInBlack, I am curious as to the cause of the anger towards SA Rugby. Is is because they pulled out of the RC or is it because of the big money move North? IHO, you should rather direct your anger towards NZ Rugby for SA Rugby's decision to withdraw from the RC. Anybody who thought that kicking SA out of Super Rugby would go unpunished is naive.

2018 Super Rugby stats are a lot more relevant than "because I say so"

No Zado he doesnt dominate the ABs and they dont fear anyone but they do seem to respect him as a player and i think NZ fans rate him higher than most Aus fans do as a player........Captaincy is a different issue altogether tho.....

One thing I do object to Paul is "Because it's the right thing to do". The reality is that NSW pushes to be a major air hub and therefore it's one of the 2 most used airports in Aus because of this. As a result all airlines primarily base international routes around NSW. So the natural market demand for arrivals is in NSW and Vic the most.

From what I've read it isn't Gladys. Chant wants stronger measure. Gladys backs in, an arm of her party is against it.

Exactly Jacko, Hooper dominates your team and number 7 every time he plays them. All Blacks fear him. No, they in fact do not fear him. Quite the opposite.
