Three things to look for in the India vs England series

By Tsat / Roar Guru

What do we look for from the India versus England Test series after that magnum opus down under?

It will be challenging for anything to surpass the kind of drama, the performances and the results that the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy produced.

Here are the top three things I will be looking out for from this India versus England series.

India’s non-Ashwin spin options at home
India’s fast bowling reserves proved themselves brilliantly in Australia. Now, with Ravindra Jadeja missing out on this home series, it is time for the spin bowling reserves to step up and show their depth.

It is still unclear who Virat Kohli will pick to accompany Ravichandran Ashwin as the second and the third spinner. Kuldeep Yadav looks more or less sure to play in the first Test as the second spinner, while the third spinner will be a call between Washington Sundar and Axar Patel.

Sundar is coming off a hugely impressive performance at The Gabba. He is an off-spinner and the fact he bowls very similarly to Ashwin might work against him, now that Ashwin is back in the team. Axar is a left-arm orthodox spinner and a decent batsman. He can be looked at as a like for like replacement for Jadeja.

I will pick Axar, as the other spinners, Ashwin and Kuldeep, bring the ball back into the right-hander.

Apart from who is picked, my interest lies in seeing how well the spin reserves perform in this series. The pitch conditions will favour them in Chennai and Ahmedabad.

Apart from Root, the rest of the English line-up are yet to prove themselves against quality spin bowling. If the pitches offer some bounce, the English can’t hope to sweep their woes away.

The return of Kohli
Virat had an ordinary 2020 in Test matches – he made only one 50 in the three Tests he played. However, he doesn’t have to look further than his fellow ‘Big Four’ batsman, Joe Root, for inspiration.

Root scored back-to-back hundreds in Sri Lanka to rejoin the best Test batsman debate, after having endured an ordinary run in the previous few years. Virat looked in fine touch during his stay in Australia.

I won’t be surprised if Virat chooses this home series to get back to his high-scoring ways.

Jofra Archer in India
Archer has the express pace, stamina and a disconcerting bouncer, which will allow him to succeed in India.

Archer’s bouncers on a low-bounce Indian pitch will be hard to get away. In recent series down under, we saw that the Australian pacers caused a lot more bodily harm in Sydney than in Brisbane or Adelaide.

Indian pitches are graveyards for medium-pace bowlers, but not for express-fast bowlers. Coming alongside James Anderson and Stuart Broad, Jofra can provide the X-factor to this series’ English attack.

Root will use Archer in short bursts and give him the license to bowl full throttle every time.

Sports opinion delivered daily

The performance of the English pace bowlers will determine the success of their team in this series.

If the India batsmen face the English spinners after a good start, I don’t see them succeeding in India.

Anderson, Broad and Archer will need to get top-order wickets cheaply for England to have any chance to succeed in this India series.

Paul, i will request you to check out Donald's bowling during that 2000 series win against India..He was unplayable at times and helped others pick up wickets on rank turners..At times, you do help others pick up wickets. As it is few teams have won test matches in India. Among those wins, if you see the impact of the real fast bowler, you will see the impact..

For sure and a terrific fielder, but they have the ultra competitor back - Kohli and he'd be super keen to make a ton of runs and win this series by lots to deny England a chance to play in the Test Championship Final.

hmm. Agreed Steyn did very well but Donald only played 2 Tests in India and bowled 58 overs in total. Fair enough he took 7 wickets at 19 but that's across 4 innings. Akhtar only played the one series in India which was his last and took 9 wickets at 33. Again, not brilliant figures IMO, while Waqar took 2 for 153 in his only series in India. Wasim also only played the one series and took 13 wickets at more than 31, so it seems only one express bowler has done well in India, which makes me think Archer will either struggle or cut his pace and try to get more sideways movement from the pitch.

But he does bring a lot, apart from his bowling. A great competitior.

not so sure, given their playing in India. He's a first choice cricketer, no argument but the other spinners India have should be good enough to trouble the Poms, given they have so many young guys

Donald, Steyn have done brilliantly..Donald was key in the 2001 series win, though not the highest wicker taker..Steyn demolished India in two series in 2008 and 2010..Shoaib Akhtar and Wasim Akram did well with speed and swing..If you go much earlier, Marshall and co have excelled in India.. Anderson is the only fast medium pace swing bowler that did well against India.. McGrath & co in 2004 were not express but did brilliantly with all round suffocation

Question Tsat. You made the comment "Indian pitches are graveyards for medium-pace bowlers, but not for express-fast bowlers." Which express quicks in recent times have done consistently well in Test in India? I also question just how fast Archer will bowl. He can certainly crank it up but doesn't seem to do that often. He's also coming off an injury to his back, so not sure how he'll go. I'm also interested to see if the SG ball actually moves in the air. Bowlers have struggled for swing in the past 12 months and maybe the rougher Indian surfaces might allow for some reverse swing? The guy I'm keen to see is Bumrah. He hasn't played a home Test yet, so I'm sure he'll be pumped up to do well.

yep, got a busted thumb in Australia and the Indian brains trust aren't going to risk rushing him back. I think they want him to go to England later this year for the series there.

Nice article Tsat. Is Jadeja out of the series?

One thing to look for is that if India lose the first match then expect the next 3 to contain the most controversy/sideplots/distractions you could ever imagine

Yeah a typical appraisal, wonder what you are going to say if it's wrong?
