Crows part ways with Tyson Stengle

By Steve Larkin / Wire

The Adelaide Crows have officially parted with AFL forward Tyson Stengle after the 22-year-old’s third off-field indiscretion.

Stengle and the Crows have struck a confidential settlement in which the 22-year-old, who was contracted until the end of next season, departs the club.

Adelaide confirmed Stengle’s exit in a statement on Wednesday after standing down the goalsneak last December when a photo circulated purportedly showing him with drugs.

That followed Stengle twice being suspended for four games for separate off-field indiscretions earlier last year.

In April, the Crows banned Stengle for four AFL games after he was caught drink-driving.

And in September, Stengle and then-teammate Brad Crouch were suspended by the AFL after being caught with illicit drugs.

Stengle was again banned for four games and Crouch, who has left the Crows for St Kilda, was suspended for two games when the AFL found the pair guilty of conduct unbecoming.

The Crows and the AFL in January gave permission for Stengle to train with his former SANFL club, Woodville-West Torrens Eagles.

Stengle was recruited from the Eagles to the AFL by Richmond in 2017 and played two games for the Tigers before joining Adelaide for the 2019 season. He played 14 games for the Crows.

Of course there is a relationship that’s built. Kids like me because they know l interact directly. It’s the uncertaintity that teachers impart which causes them issues. —– I taught at a school which was the smallest in the region and we were area champions, in AF, 4 of the 8 years l was there. That doesn’t happen by accident. —– And 3rd strike, gonski, I’ve got no problems with that.

I wouldn't pigeon hole anyone on day one, especially kids

A bigger payout would've been worth it for the message an immediate sacking sends. ------ I teach timber and metal to mostly mid-teenage boys. I teach 2 types of kids. Ones that do the right thing and the others are learning to do the right thing.

I am not sure that acting quickly (albeit decisively) putting the club in the gun for a significant payout (including damages) would signify that they weren't "weak in the head"! In fact I would have viewed it as pretty dumb! We all knew that Stengle was finished at Adelaide (and elsewhere I suspect), the wheels just needed to turn.

I saw your comment above just then; understoid and accepted. I just know we're weak in the head and, frankly, the new admin should've been across this. Whatever they did was p!$$-weak.

I still maintain I wasn't meaning to imply that about Adelaide...but you are right.

Adelaide is not a culturally strong club is the bleeding tacitness of your statement. It’s not the culture of the club, it’s the administration run on ‘new-age’ menshevism that the Bolsheviks abhorred. ——- Case in Point: Had we been a strongly administered club Stengle would’ve been gone straight after the 3rd infraction. And yes l spose culture is part of the milieu. Why was any ramification or outcome considered? It beggars belief. It should’ve been 3rd infraction…gonski! —— I’m not impressed by Nicks at all; he’s too bl○○dy nice. And I’d’ve thought that the new administration could’ve have made their mark.

I might add, his problems were nothing (as far as we know) when he left Richmond compared with now.

No, it wasn't a comment on Richmond or Adelaide. Sorry, didn't mean it to come across that way. I just meant that if he can somehow convince a club that he is on the straight and narrow, then it could work, but for his sake that would have to be a strong club. It doesn't seem likely to me either. It is interesting to read that Adelaide offered to honour the 2 years left on the contract with this year 100% SANFL but he knocked it back saying it would set his AFL career back too much. That suggests he is backing himself to be picked up in the mid year draft, otherwise I would have thought it was in his interests to stick with the Crows.

Are you saying Richmond isnt culturally strong - they were more than happy to let him go to? Some lads just dont have the discipline - simple as that

Culture is a big thing these days, and becoming bigger by the day. I suspect most clubs wouldn't draft in a known problem player, even if he was elite. West Coast overlooked its drug issues in the 2000's but that was then and Stengle is no Cousins. Even back then, I'm not sure how many clubs would have taken Cousins on with his issues.

Will he be able to nominate? Different situation but Elijah wood isn't allowed to nominate for mid season draft. Either way I have seen in questioned whether clubs will have good enough resources post covid soft cap reduction to spend time on a more troubled player.

Might be worth a mid year draft selection for a culturally strong club.
