Essendon Round 9 review

By Charlie Keegan / Roar Guru

My boys finally won a close one.

The Bombers went in favourites on Sunday afternoon, if only for the simple reason it was an away game for the Fremantle Dockers, who’ve shown a complete inability to do the job away from their home ground.

It was a dour game as there were errors galore and the Bombers ground out an important win within the context of their season. Read on for my lessons from Essendon’s Round 9 match-up.

Fifth win in a row over Freo
The Bombers have had the wood over Freo in recent years. It is their longest streak currently running, tied equal with North Melbourne with five consecutive wins over them.

While I am willing to attribute the bulk of this to the Dockers playing the majority of these matches away from home, it does feel good to have the wood on a side, particularly with the hoodoos the Bombers have against sides like the Western Bulldogs and Richmond.

Livin Laverde Loca Parte Dos
I am thinking I will make this a recurring section for these pieces in the future and there ain’t nothing you all can do about it.

I will use this to draw attention to players who I felt have not received the right amount of attention from the talking heads of the football media and who I believe are under-appreciated.

The winner of the second weekly Laverde Loca award is Mason ‘Red Dog’ Redman. Twenty-four disposals at 95 per cent efficiency and a goal on the run, taking his total to four for the year.

Redman is a halfback who does not enjoy losing and will do everything humanly possible to drag the Bombers over the line.

Other players who were considered for this award: Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti, who is putting forward an All Australian-quality season at the small forward position with 17 disposals and two goals on the weekend – Sunday was no exception.

Then, there was Andy McGrath himself.

He appears to be taking something of a back seat to the demonstrative nature of Zach Merrett, and the speed with which Darcy Parrish has taken as a clearance specialist and inside bull.

McGrath had 27 disposals at 70 per cent efficiency, along with eight tackles and six score involvements (equal third on the Bombers side).

He may be somewhat unfairly compared to the players taken after him in the draft, but I believe this detracts from his own contributions, which are special in their own way.

The Bombers win a close one
As has been made extremely apparent in the media considering the Bombers win, there has been speculation on the inability of the Bombers to get the job done in tightly contested games.

I am willing to attribute at least part of this win to the inability of Fremantle forwards to convert their opportunities (Freo kicked 13 behinds, compared to Essendon’s eight), and it made all the difference when the Bombers got over the line.

The closest wins taste the sweetest (though my cardiologist would almost certainly disagree).

Fremantle would’ve lost very few fans in this game, as well. While their reliance on Nat Fyfe and David Mundy bodes poorly for Fremantle, the smooth-moving Adam Cerra, and Liam Henry show hopeful sparks for the future.

Tobe Watson and Griffin Logue will be handy pillars down back for Fremantle going forward.

What they need to work on is converting their opportunities going forward and making sure their players understand that crisp movement on the outside is as important.

Does it count as resting a player if they’re the sub?
Nikolas Cox has been a very good player for the Bombers in his tenure at Essendon.

He was initially rested when the sides were named on Saturday, but it was not to be, as Ben Rutten tempted fate naming him as the medical sub.

Devon Smith, unfortunately, paid the price of damaging his hamstring in the third quarter of Sunday, which meant Cox was to come onto the field, thus invalidating the effectiveness of the rest.

While he was hardly as impactful as Matt Guelfi was when he was the sub with five disposals in a quarter of play, he was extremely serviceable. He will benefit from the lessened load for the Bombers, but the medical sub is a work in progress and still easily abused.

This one’s for the AFL…again
Much has been made of the poor umpiring over the weekend and the lower importance given to the appropriateness of the disposal in the middle of a tackle.

Sports opinion delivered daily

However, this is secondary to the point I am making here.

On Sunday, there was a midfield match-up for the ages in Caleb Serong and Zach Merrett going head-to-head, but this resulted in multiple spot fires that the AFL needs to come down hard on, lest a player gets severely hurt.

The head-high hits cannot stand, no matter how soft. It is time the AFL begins to rate action at least as much as the outcome.

Without further ado, let’s go onto the best:

•Andy McGrath (13 votes)
•Dyson Heppell (7 votes)
•Jordan Ridley (5 votes)
•Darcy Parrish (22 votes)
•Mason Redman (14 votes)
•Nick Hind (13 votes).

Leaderboard:
•Zach Merrett (24 votes)
•Darcy Parrish (22 Votes)
•Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (17 votes).

Thanks for reading, Roarers.

I hope you enjoyed my review of the Bombers’ Round 9 clash.

Tune in next week for, hopefully, a positive review of the Bombers’ clash with the hapless Roos on Sunday afternoon.

Think they will lose to the Kangaroos, however, they will be very completive against the Dees. Can see the Dees losing multiple games going forward.

Really concerned that Cox is relief rucking. He is going to be a genuine star and reminds me of a mix of a few past players but i cannot nail it in one. A bit of Mark Browning from the Swans and a little bit of Pendebury maybe?

Essendons back half is becoming more stagnant since Anzac Day and this a worrying trend for me. They are using the corridor less, more backwards kicking, overhandling the ball in the D50 - they are going back to the 2019-20 ways of a s If it wasn't for Hind and Redman who both break through the lines, I really worry for the Bombers defence this year. Good attacking sides are going to destroy them (Dogs, Eagles, Melb) in the months ahead.

I'd be playing Jones this week and then leaving him in Melbourne for the WC game. We're not winning that anyway and with West Coast's strong aerial backline I think it's a good game for Ambrose to come in.

The closest point of comparison is probably Blicavs but Blicavs is a really good athlete but when he started he wasn’t a particularly gifted footballer, Cox has him beat for skills and athletic ability.

Loving the way that backline is coming together so well, particularly Francis, Riddles, LaVerde, Redman & Hind. Stewart is getting there-give him time. McGraths spearing pass out of the centre to Jones early in the first quarter was an absolute belter. Hugely underrated imo. Would like to see Watto in for Smith. Going really well, and his grunt work out of the centre in the Magoos would be very helpful against Cunnington. Ambrose in for Hooker too makes sense. A real danger game this. Roos always put up a real fight against our lads.

Yep I think Parrish provides some point of difference but he’s still slightly too small to be a big bullocking midfielder . I think it’s good that they’re putting a lot of minutes into Cox and Perkins. I actually think Cox is a unicorn style player, a potentially unicorn style player that revolutionises his position and I believe once he puts some muscle on those bones then he will make the biggest and best ruck rover in the competition, while Perkins is coming along nicely and I love the fact we are putting him in at every centre bounce.

It is a problem your club needs to address regarding a sameness in your midfield, diversity is the key ingredient for a prolonged successful team. Chuck ring up Essendon headquarters on your bat phone & demand answers!

Yeah I agree with your points, hind has been great since he moved over from the Saints. I think it’ll be neck and neck at the critchon between him and Merrett. The problem I’ve noticed with McGrath is his disposal but he always plays in the way the Bombers need. I agree that Hooker could use a rest particularly with Ambrose banging down the door in the VFL.

Cox was "managed" not "rested" so using him as a Med Sub was exactly that. He only played a Quarter and thus was effectively managed and gained 5 disposals which over a full game would be 20. If he was "rested" he would not have been the Sub. I'm glad you highlighted McGrath's effort as it seems to have been overlooked by many commentators. McGrath is not as flashy as Parish and Redman but is very workmanlike and it was great to see him stand up for Merrett. I'd love to see those two as co-captains next year, which is not a slight on Heppell as he has done a great job but needs to move to being a mentor helping the younger brigade. What about Hind? You seem to have overlooked his importance to the result. I think this was his best game in the AFL with over 30 disposals for the first time. Did Saad ever have that many? Watching Saad play with Carlton and seeing Hind play for the Bombers, I'd have to conclude that Essendon has ended up with the more productive player. I doubted he would have that impact and was saddened by the loss of Saad but I have been forced to rethink that position and look at what we gained by getting that draft pick and I think we won! Finally, maybe Hooker needs a "rest" and for the club to look at Ambrose as a leading forward against North. Cale could do with a freshen up and let us find out if Ambrose is up to that forward role at AFL level. He was outstanding in the VFL last week.

Hey Chuck back to the drawing board if you lose to the hapless Roos that would be a travesty!

Yeah Jones has done really well to make it thus far and j actually think he’s the bombers best rookie this year, I think Coxy and Perkins will overtake him as they progress but 10 goals one behind since round one is very very good

I thought Nik Cox was in need of a rest and coming in only for the fourth quarter achieved that. Harrison Jones would also benefit from a rest but I wouldn’t tempt fate again by naming him as the medical sub, it is not just a physical thing as the mental pressure for a young player must be immense.
