Heppell as a gallant leader in troubled times. Resigned with dignity but it should help Essendon move forward into a future built around all the talented youth they have recruited. Heppell will still be a valuable player and mentor to the new Captain, probably Merrett. A new President, a new Coach, a new CEO and a new Captain. It really is a clean sweep and should see a more enthusiastic, committed, aggressive and successful Essendon compared to last year.

'Ultimate team man': Heppell relinquishes Bombers captaincy

Thanks William,
Your assessment is very realistic and probably fairly close to the likely 1st Round team, although there are question marks on Tippa’s fitness and will he be ready.
There are a number of players on a possible Emergency List or a Watch and See List who could surprise and take the place of players in your team.
TO WATCH LIST: Smith, Baldwin, Francis, Durham, McDonagh, Lord, and Ham.
I can’t see anyone else challenging early in the season but later in the year perhaps Reid, Hurley and Fejo (if recruited). The one to watch imo is Baldwin. If he fires in the pre-season and his knees hold out, he could make the difference in the Forward half that could propel the Bombers into a top 6 position.

2022 AFL season preview: Can Essendon get back to the finals?

We didn’t let him go to St.Kilda. They picked him just before Essendon was going to pick him. But he’s back home now!

Ready for a run at the eight: Essendon Round 17 review

Good assessment overall and the loss of McGrath early hurt. Ambrose didn’t look up to it and probably should be delisted come seasons end. Guelfi isn’t a defender. Cahill would have been a better option than Ambrose. Essendon are still a level below the Top 8 teams and needs to rejig its defence if it’s going to be Top 8 next year. At least there are some developing defenders in the youth brigade like Reid, McBride and Brand who should be given some opportunity this season for them to see what’s required and for us to assess their future potential at AFL level. Wright, Snelling and Smith should be back in the next few weeks but unfortunately it doesn’t help strengthen the backline. I know the backs are a new formation this season but I have concerns that Stewart and Francis may not be solid long term prospects. Both of them appear to whinge and blame too much when mistakes are made. Laverde has been a bonus. In the ruck division, Cox should be kept out of it at this stage. He’s too light and could suffer serious injuries. With Draper returning, along with Wright, it should strengthen the midfield. If Jones is to be rested maybe try Bryan or Reid as a key Forward. If resting Perkins, give Durham a shot. It’s a development year and exploring different possibilities will surely help the team going forward. The results are not the main thing this year, it’s the development of the youth brigade. Finally – I thought it was a wow performance by the Bombers until Stringer missed the shot that could have put us 8 points up. Richmond went down the other end and regained the lead and quickly added another. Did that break our spirit and resistance? Well, the Tigers were awesome and we learned a lot and I hope we take advantage of that.

Essendon Round 12 review

Thanks Chuckakhan for another positive review. A couple of questions:

1. How do you rate Stewart’s role in the backline? Is he just a 2021 stand-in or do you see him locking down that position going forward?

2. Reid – he played forward several times in the past and kicked 4 goals in a Bombers practice match. Could he be developed as a tall forward for 2022 to replace Hooker or is Baldwin the player for the future in that role. No disrespect for Hooker as he’s done well so far this year but seems to be slowing and I worry about next year if he stays there.
3. Waterman kicked 2 goals but is there a place for both he and Stringer in the line up. Did he get enough use of the ball against North or is that about what we should expect?

Essendon Round 10 review

Stringer maybe, but Draper has been out too long and needs a run in the VFL. Besides, Phillips is competing well and out-rucked North on the weekend. Coming up against Natanui, Phillips would be a better option while Draper builds again in the two’s.

Jake Stringer presses case for Bombers recall

Cox was “managed” not “rested” so using him as a Med Sub was exactly that. He only played a Quarter and thus was effectively managed and gained 5 disposals which over a full game would be 20. If he was “rested” he would not have been the Sub.
I’m glad you highlighted McGrath’s effort as it seems to have been overlooked by many commentators. McGrath is not as flashy as Parish and Redman but is very workmanlike and it was great to see him stand up for Merrett. I’d love to see those two as co-captains next year, which is not a slight on Heppell as he has done a great job but needs to move to being a mentor helping the younger brigade.
What about Hind? You seem to have overlooked his importance to the result. I think this was his best game in the AFL with over 30 disposals for the first time. Did Saad ever have that many? Watching Saad play with Carlton and seeing Hind play for the Bombers, I’d have to conclude that Essendon has ended up with the more productive player. I doubted he would have that impact and was saddened by the loss of Saad but I have been forced to rethink that position and look at what we gained by getting that draft pick and I think we won!
Finally, maybe Hooker needs a “rest” and for the club to look at Ambrose as a leading forward against North. Cale could do with a freshen up and let us find out if Ambrose is up to that forward role at AFL level. He was outstanding in the VFL last week.

Essendon Round 9 review

I enjoy reading considered reviews on all club performances. Sadly, not enough supporters are prepared to do a review on their own club. Keep in going Chuckakhan, great job!
