TPJ call leaves Broncos skipper shattered

Brisbane telling Tevita Pangai Jnr he’s free to find another club may have blindsided Alex Glenn, but the Broncos captain admits things have to change at Red Hill.

The revelation Pangai Jnr had been granted permission to speak to rival clubs emerged during Thursday’s 46-0 hammering at Suncorp Stadium by South Sydney, a defeat that leaves the once-proud club back on the bottom of the NRL ladder.

Glenn said the news over the 25-year-old’s future coming out during a match was far from ideal and reckoned he’d be sad to see the Tongan international exit the club.

“That’s a tough pill to swallow, to be honest,” Glenn said.

“I’m not in control of what happens with players going and coming but that’s not something you need to be released mid-game.”

Pangai Jnr is unlikely to be the only departure from the club with coach Kevin Walters announcing after the match there would be a mid-season review of the entire organisation.

Thursday’s loss was the Broncos’ fourth on the spin – they’ve conceded 176 points in that spell – and Walters and new chief executive Dave Donaghy have clearly had enough with the mediocrity that has engulfed the former powerhouse.

Glenn, a Broncos junior who debuted in 2009 and played in the 2014 grand final against North Queensland, said the team’s terrible form was simply getting harder and harder to bear.

“I’ve been at this club for over a decade and this jersey means so much to me,” he said.

“We’re getting beaten by 40-plus points every week, bro.

“It hurts, man. It’s not in the Broncos DNA and that’s the shattering part to be honest.”

Unaware what the promised review would mean for him or other players, Glenn conceded it was clear changes, some which may be difficult, have to be made.

“You’d be stupid if you weren’t thinking that this was going to happen. It’s reality, bro,” he said.

“We’re getting beaten by 40-plus points. Something has to change.

“The review … it will be a good thing. There’ll be some tough calls to make, and I’m glad I’m not the one that has to make that, but reality is there has to be changes done.”

News for you Alex Glen, TPJ won’t be the only one leaving the club at years end. Best you make the call early before you get tapped on the shoulder by Mr. Ben Ikin.

"Glenn, a Broncos junior who debuted in 2009 and played in the 2014 grand final against North Queensland." Wrong year. It was 2015 when the Cowboys pipped the Broncos. 2014 was the year of the Sam Burgess broken cheekbone grand final.

Alex Glenn has to go. Captain of a wooden spoon team potentially two year in a row is disastrous. If he plays in 2022 I will be disappointed. Nice guy but the game has gone past him.

The only decision the Bronco’s have made which was correct in the past 5 years was deciding Kevin Walters wasn’t up to coaching at an NRL standard. Siebold and Bennett will enjoy the next 12 months as they continue to implode

Glenn mixed 8 tackles last night. Many of them one on one with Gagai and a couple led directly to tries. The experience of Glenn and Hunt is not working out hoe Walters planned.

There will be a lot more clubs lining up to take Tevita as a player than Kevvie as a coach.

Look I don't want to sound mean-spirited, but Alex Glenn has played 277 games for the Broncos and for the life of me I can't remember him standing out in any of them. His form has mirrored the Bronco's results the past few years. Not sure how many clubs will lining up to sign TPJ mid season now that he will possibly face 4 weeks suspension out of the Rabbits game.

You are spot on. Nobody has any game awareness. Its like a lot of them haven't played League before. The decision making is awful. And its not just at the Broncs . Teams in the lower half of the ladder all lack players with a footy brain.

No sheet. Get pumped 40pts each week and expect nothing to change? No player has a right to the jumper. There are not many clubs chasing stars and those that are will not paid what they are currently earning. That says enough to me and should be a clear signal what the market thinks of their perfomance.

Brisbane have no footy players, just blokes who look like they spend all their time in the gym. They have no footy nous between the ears at all. And I dare say Kevvie probably doesn't have the coaching chops at this level either. They haven't moved forward at all, just let a bunch of their best juniors go to other clubs.

Alex is about as useful as K Hunt

K Hunt couldn't even get a run in a Super rugby team at the moment. He's days are pretty numbered. I think he'd be a relatively useful 14 similar to Benji, but in a decent team

Alex, i think you’re on the money. Things have to change, i heard that at the end of last season, deja vu. Don’t know if you’ve been given the tap on the shoulder Alex, but you have played a season too long in my opinion. Karmichael Hunt is not the player he was, time for him to go back to Souths and finish up in the Q Cup.
