Today marks seven days since Paul Vaughan made the regretful decision to host an illegal 12-man BBQ gathering, disregarding strict NSW government COVID and NRL bubble regulations.
As a result, all players who attended the party were slapped with hefty fines and suspensions.
These fines were based on the players’ varying salaries.
The suspensions handed out saw all players given a one-week suspension with the exception of Paul Vaughan.
Vaughan was originally given eight weeks however instead he saw his contact torn up in a cut-throat decision by the Dragons’ board.
A question floating around the media outlets is can the Dragons still make the eight?
They currently sit seventh with 16 points with the Sharks, Knights and Cowboys on their tail with 14.
One huge benefit given to the Dragons from the NRL’s punishment is they were granted permission to choose the weeks in which their players use their one-week suspensions.
For example, the Dragons can rest three players this round, three the next and so on.
Tonight the Dragons are due to face Manly at Cbus Super Stadium on the sunny Gold Coast.
The heavy favourites are Manly, sitting at around $1.30 and the Red V are at $4.
In saying that, the sheer impact of Tom Trbojevic could prove a deciding factor.
He will be rested for tonight’s game, which many fans and pundit see as the Dragons’ main thread to get ahead in this match.
Key players such as Matt Dufty and Zac Lomax attended the gathering and received hefty fines, however other pivotal players like Ben Hunt and Tariq Sims did not.
I don’t believe anyone questions the talent of the Dragons’ squad and their inability to crack the top eight, but rather the magnitude of the situation, the scrutinising media, the guilt and the morale of the club as a whole and if these will affect the team and its staff to fall out of the top eight.

Huge push from the players need mentally, while down on troops. I think the Dragons are done.

They dropped crucial points earlier in the season against the Sharks etc. too.

A couple of pundits while roasting them, do say in the long run it could be good for the club. Time will tell.

Hate to say that a team decreases in quality so much without one player but Turbo is just that impactful.

Pivotal end to their season, they will need to dig deep mentally.

Well said. A huge reason why many telly's are being switched off at half time. :crying:

In terms of making the GF, you're probably right. For some of the teams major improvements from last season are a win in their own right.

Agreed, given turbo remains fit. Hard to see Souths or Parra making a GF appearance with some inconsistencies.

If there is a surprise grand finalist it will be Manly.

Logic dictates that the comp is so top heavy (top 4 sides with a combined 8 losses after round 17), unprecedented really, that there are just not enough wins left for the rest. Where normally the 50% 12W/12L/1B - 26 would be needed, now is much much closer to 10W/14L/1B - 22 points. I think 22 is the mark. 10&14. What a sad indictment on the standard of 2021.

not yet, but close. of the 7 games left they need to win 4 to be masters of their own destiny. 3 and they are relying on other results and some big wins. It's their fault for dropping games to Dogs, Sharks and Wests that they should have won. Should have been safe on 24pts atm.

With Turbo and DCE out I hate to say it but I’d anticipate a shambles like performance like last week again from Manly, happy to be proven wrong but St George could be in for the ‘upset’

Dragons are done. They don’t have the troops and Vaughn was one of their best on field. It is time for them to start looking to the end of season BBQ.

It's a bit early to make a call on their season but it's looking more and more that way. I'm anxious to see how they fare with the suspensions. This whole BBQ scenario could be just the thing to unite them.

Is the Dragons' season over? Yep. Can't see them getting the 3 more wins they'll need, especially now that's he played too many of his better players in a game they were going to lose anyway.
