Did the Olyroos' win reinforce the City winter press system?

By Winter A League is Awesome / Roar Rookie

Andy Harper mentioned this towards the game of against Argentina: “It was an eye-watering performance by (Nathaniel) Atkinson”.

The A-League was magnificently represented with all clubs showing their influence on football in Australia.

They came out to win from the beginning, which shows the belief of Australian football is strong in certain camps.

And this belief must start at the top with Graham Arnold.

The City alumni went crazy and turned it up to another level. Atkinson, Marco Tilio, Connor Metcalfe, Tom Glover, Lachlan Wales (who spent many seasons in Heart and City colours) and Riley McGree.

There are probably others and I apologise if I missed any.

Is it a coincidence that the City winter press could be a contributor to last night’s win?

“Having access to what Pep is doing over in Manchester through the coach educators is fantastic; we are able to tap into a lot of that information and we have close relationships with them all,” Melbourne City’s director of football Michael Petrillo told The Age.

“Khaldoon, the chairman watches all of our games. He will be watching again on the weekend.

“Kisnorbo has been part of the City Group’s development program since he stopped playing and has come through the ranks in Melbourne, coaching the youth academy, the women’s team to a W-League championship and assisting Warren Joyce and Erick Mombaerts before becoming head coach this season.”

In an article with The Guardian, he continued on this theme.

“We want to play a certain game style, and that is in-your-face, high-pressing, winning the ball back as quickly as we can, moving constantly – and to do that for 90 minutes is difficult,” Petrillo said.

By instilling this system into the minds and bodies of the players, the whole of Australian football community benefits.

Is there any greater endorsement that football needs to be played in winter when you can run for 90 minutes?

Is this the only way to ever win the ACL again?

Dont think that is the case at all. When was the last time he did 90 minutes? Its like Diamanti, great passes but he doesnt run for 90 minutes.

Ninkovic might be getting old but he still runs further in a game than almost anyone else.

What about recent ACLs? Would the Olyroos have won the game without the winter press?

We have been more successful in summer time, 2x ACL finals and winning the Asian Cup plus 4x World Cup qualification. Something Winter press would/has never done.

Thats precisely it. Most juniors football coaches are parents that havent played the game before. So what they teach isnt great. If you teach this from a young age than it is so ingrained that it becomes automatic and you dont even have to think about it. This is how football will develop in Australia into being internationally competitive. Kisnorbo is basically a olyroos and socceroos coach already. He has coached most of the olyroos and some of the socceroos over the last couple of seasons. He has won the league and the finals as did Arnold. The main difference between Corica and Kisnorbo is that Kisnorbo has shaped these Olyroos which is something Arnold values highly as it isnt his job description to do both the Socceroos and Olyroos.

It’s interesting how committed they are to their style. The full on press. My kid goes to one of their clinics. Sure, it’s a money making thing. But all the way through from Man City to these little football schools (I’m not talking academy level) it’s basically the same stuff and it’s very effective compared to our inconsistently applied national curriculum at club level. I love how no matter the level of the kid they mercilessly drive them all the same, very high intensity, and the outcome is they all do get better. Meanwhile, back in NSL land some dad has a bunch of kids taking turns to have shots at goal.

Yeah guys like Ninkovic will need a younger player next to him so he makes up for the running. If you have Ninkovic and Bratten in the middle than its going to be a pretty slow game. Who pass it to the over 35 strikers :silly: . But it will be a great experiment to see if an older team can keep winning. And if it works, than why change what isnt broken.

We'll see if he's in another class. As he's played in the Premier League and did well for 3 years then he has proven his class. Tilio is a faster more action style of player - hopefully he'll prove himself in a top league in the future. I'm not sure about Corica's plan or his signings but he's been pretty successful so far. I think Andy's got into my head - I want to see more youth mixed with class players like Ninjovic, Wilkinson and LeFondre. Hopefully Nieuenhoff, Wood and Buhagiar really get a good go this year.

Mooy was another class of player. The Arzani transfer would have helped as well. But than you have guys like jmac who stays at City. I don't think Tilio would have gotten a run at Sydney as Corica is sticking to the same strategy that he has had since Arnold left. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.news.com.au/sport/football/aleague-sydney-coach-steve-corica-sticking-to-successful-principals-despite-sky-blues-being-deposed-last-season/news-story/ab4b3bf6c0190ccd099a98dbbea4c7d4 I think it will be fascinating to see how the two different systems play out over the next couple of seasons. Hopefully Corica adapts and didnt sign his own marching orders.

If only we'd played Tilio - hopefully he fully lives up to the potential he is showing. Manchester City may do some good business with him. I think the money made on Mooye funded your club for 2 seasons.

Tilio, Arzani - Sydney FC, Glover - Sydney, Lachlan Wales - Mariners, Mercalfe - Newcastle, McGree - Adelaide. Melbourne City have great talent scouts!

I did enjoy watching City last year and if their approach to games raises the standard of play and players in the A League (as Ange did a few years ago) then great. If City can nurture and give opportunities to Sydney FC produced talent like Tilio and other young players then great. We all want the best possible A League we can see/have. Without doubt, the best running football would be played in winter and if the rich Emirates backed City can fund a winter based competition that others won't then I'll support that, too!
