'I'm ashamed of what I've done': Tex Walker unsure of playing future after racism ban

By The Roar / Editor

Adelaide Crows star Taylor Walker has fronted the media for the first time since he received a six-week ban over a racist slur towards Robbie Young in a SANFL game.

Walker released a video soon after the incident in which he appeared alongside Young and apologised but he didn’t face the media and received criticism for the move.

“Robbie expressed his wish to educate me and that’s basically how the video came about,” Walker said.

Today he copped a number of hard questions as the media grilled the former Adelaide captain who said he wasn’t allowed to answer some due to confidentiality in the conciliation process.

He admits that he’s not sure when or if he’ll play AFL again.

“At the moment, playing is not my priority. Repairing relationships with the people I’ve hurt is my main priority,” Walker said.

Walker said he will take the advice of his past and present indigenous teammates and will spend some time in their country to learn about first nations culture and traditions.

“I need to get a better understanding of the pain and hurt I’ve caused,” he said.

In particular, he seemed deeply troubled about his fractured relationship with former teammate Eddie Betts.

“I’ve hurt him, his family and the rest of the Indigenous community, so I have to fix that. I’m ashamed that what I’ve done has caused so much pain.”

“Please judge me on what I do from here on in.”

“That’s been the hardest thing, how I’ve let my family down. I hope I’m not remembered for one remark and the people that know me understand the person I am.”

The 31-year-old admitted he was in denial that he even made the racist comment at first.

“I panicked and I was scared but then I thought I’m coming forward to own this and I want to get better for it.”

Walker said he wants to attend the Crows’ best and fairest awards night on Saturday when the Malcolm Blight medallist will be unveiled but said it’s up to the club to determine if he’s allowed to.

Ok - I'll wear that. I made a reply earlier to your post that's disappeared into the ether. Anyhow, I don't agree with either of you.

No, you're clearly mixed up. Here is a direct quote from Walker in this article. https://thewest.com.au/sport/afl/adelaide-captain-taylor-walker-told-jake-lever-he-was-choosing-money-over-success-ng-b88624195z Plus it was reported that senior players wanted Lever dropped for the 2017 Grand Final because he was leaving. I think the "not a nice person" was well justified.

Of course your entitled to your opinions. It almost seems like an echo chamber in here now. Not sure I was attacking anyone at all. I was merely pointing out a series of events that happened. Yes, your bad for mentioning Lever. He has nothing to do this conversation. As far as I know, only the few people directly involved know exactly what Walker said. All we know is he made a racist remark to Matt Crouch regarding a player from the another team who wasn't present at the time. Nice of you to make the reach that it was snide. Is he wallowing in self pity? Or is that just way you chose to interpret it? Interesting hill to plant you flag on considering your limited knowledge of what has actually transpired to date. And again, as per my last post, "but hey, you’re entitled to your own opinions. I just don’t understand your reasoning".

Not sure if Roar qualify as a social media site but hey we're entitled to our opinions. You seem to now be attacking Brian Taylor, Lever, Bartel, Dangerfield and Jenkins in an apparent effort to make Walker seem like the nice guy. I don't know about your Geelong/ex-Adelaide player conspiracies but I believe Walker said that 'money or success' comment on radio. You don't seem to understand that my reason for disliking Walker is based on him making a snide racist remark and wallowing in his own pity. He should know better as a former/present leader! Sheesh! My bad for mentioning Lever in the first place

You clearly didn't pay too much attention to his press conference yesterday. You know, the press conference large sections of the media have literals been demanding for the last fortnight

Every man, woman and their dogs have publicly dumped on Walker, with most of them I bet not even knowing the full content of what was said. It obviously wasn’t within the bounds of current acceptance. But all these keyboard Warriors that thrive in adding more misery to an already overdone case need to walk away and let the dust settle

If the standard you walk past is the standard you accept, then you have a privilege that many do not enjoy.

He does, but he needs to make it less about him. None of his public comments are doing him any good.

You're posting here, a football forum. A good percentage of the articles here are in fact written by people who post on this forum. It is social media. Not to mention to the outrage from main stream media. And then you have a large number Adelaide games being commentated by Brian Taylor who never failed to mention Lever at every opportunity (with a nauseating amount of mayo) during the course of the season. Taylor who was invited into the Adelaide rooms post game to provide interviews. The same Taylor who was paid a $30K commission by Lever to act as a quasi agent or manager on his behalf. The same Taylor who organised a cringeworthy interview with Lever on prime time television for the benefit of .. who knows? And Lever the bloke who touted by the club as a potential future captain. The bloke who professed his love of the club and on numerous occasions spoke of being a 1 club player and staying in Adelaide for the duration of his career. Lever, and his father for that matter, throwing tantrums at the club when he was brought back from injury via the SANFL. Walker clearly isn't the most articulate bloke going around. And as I mentioned, his conversation with Lever was taken out of context. His conversation with Lever was about his disappointment that Lever wasn't staying. In regard to the 'money and success' comment. You're clearly mixed up. That was a comment made in jest by Josh Jenkins to Paddy Dangerfield in the lead up to the finals. You know, the same Josh Jenkins who is at Geelong now and was and still is good mates with Dangerfield. Just another media beat over a couple of blokes who had played together previously having a little public banter. Jimmy Bartel in particular did a wonderful stitch up in the media over that one. But hey, you're entitled to your own opinions. I just don't understand your reasoning.

You can't just flick a switch. It's a complex transformation and has layers of thought and action on a daily basis which take time. In the meantime the best thing he could do is to continue to occupy his time training and playing. Stopping doing what he loves could turn to resentment and anger, not just at himself but the world around him. Or he could just go bush for a year in the NT.

Hi JB Firstly I don't do social media period. Secondly you don't need to be captain or part of the leadership group to be considered a leader. With age should come maturity and younger players will look up to the senior players for leadership regardless of their leadership status or tag. Thirdly, no I haven't met him. I really am basing my 'not a nice person' comment based on life experience in dealing with people who need to make snide racist slurs and then cry when they're called out for it. Also his comments to Lever show he has a lack of grace. All he had to say was "good luck with your new team, it's sad we're losing a good player" rather than "you're choosing money over success".

Sure, the AFL media like to bang on about older players being leaders and role models. The fact is he stepped down from the captaincy and the leadership group 2 years ago. As for Jake Lever, Walker was taken completely out of context by a section of the media busy trying to justify/protect Lever from criticism for leaving Adelaide during a period they were busy still sinking the boot into Adelaide over their GF loss. As for being 'not a nice person', I doubt you have ever met him and base your opinion on how to think by main stream and social media.

I would be surprised if he plays let alone leads again. As the on-field leader you are supposed to lead by example. At 31 years of age I will bet my house that this wasn't his first ever racist slur. His sorrow is born from being outed. The guy is a great player on his day but sadly that doesn't make you a good person or leader. The way he dealt with Jake Lever leaving Adelaide a couple of seasons ago was an eye opener for me. He's not a nice person. I also can't imagine that one would make an 'apology' video that had the person he vilified console him. Who's idea was that? The PR team need an overhaul at Adelaide as they are starting to rival Collingwood for the Public Gaffe Cup.

We've got quite awhile before the start of next season where he can do that work and maybe not have quite as much focus on him as you would during an actual season. I know what I mean anyway.lol. I'm a Port Boy obviously but even I think it would be sad to see him go out like this, everybody makes mistakes and should be given a chance to redeem themselves on and off the field. I think anyway.lol.
