How should Australian football use the new media deal to grow the game?

By Midfielder / Roar Guru

This is a short article that is to the point, and open for discussion by the Roar community.

On Monday, Brisbane Roar versus Peninsula Power was the first FFA Cup match this season.

All FFA Cup games are live and free on Ten Play.

On Monday it was announced that all AFC games will be on Ten Play.

All Asian World Cup Qualifiers are on Ten Play.

Sports opinion delivered daily

To this we have the A-League and W-League to be broadcast on Ten, Bold and Paramount Plus.

Outside the matches Australian teams are directly involved in, the broadcast will pick up an English broadcast rather than a local broadcast.

Beyond this – and this part is critical – is CBS have said they are in for the long haul, and believe the rewards will come at the end of the media deal rather than the beginning.

To this end, CBS have a trigger three-year clause with APL.

In all my life, Australian professional football has never had this level of support in broadcasting. Backing this up is $70 million in contracts between CBS and FA and APL.

APL has announced they have invested $30 million in developing what they are calling the home of football web page. Further, they say this page will connect many areas of Australian football in one place.

October is said to be the date the push starts to market football and I guess this will be a combined effort by APL, FA and CBS.

For those of us wanting change over recent years, the separation of FA and the professional game means we have it. Further, for those calling on new people from football in James Johnson and Danny Townsend, we have that too.

As I see the new broadcast partner, the broadcast products and the backing, we football folk need to support CBS, I guess by watching.

Moreover, there is the need to grow football to enable many other things we want: promotion and relegation, which revenue streams make near impossible.

How do we as a football community use the new media deal to grow and expand football, and open up more revenue streams?

My fellow Roarers, I am open for your ideas on how we take advantage of this new environment.

Just once, you might have something positive to say about football. Yes you are "interested" in soccer. That's very obvious!

Chris, funny that I have never claimed to not be interested in soccer. I clearly am. More generally, I am interested in all Football codes - particularly the commercial and structural aspects - which makes the Roar such a great place to occasionally visit and converse given its coverage of the 4 Australian football codes. Meanwhile you hang out on surely the only multisport forum in the world where soccer is the distant 4th football code, vigilantly jumping at anyone who comments on the "football tab" that might follow the AFL more than soccer. At least as often you make comments about the AFL without anyone else prompting you. In the high likelihood you don't just time your presence here perfectly with my visits, you must be doing this all day every day for years and years! Speaking of permanent homes

You sure spend a lot of time in something you aren't interested in. I guess football is in your head and is permanently housed in there.

Power have been in Poor Form since returning to play after our most recent lockdown Prior to that Power had only lost 1 game all season but since returning to play they have lost 2 and drew to a team likely to be relegated in the NPL QLD but Power Should retain the Premiership as they have multiple games in hand over other teams close to them in points

Middy, I was responding to Chris who was referring to last nights news 1) No the post was a sober analysis of the 10 deal. It said nothing like "Channel 10 are not smart". The broad push of the post is that it is far from certain that it would work and Channel 10's relatively low ratings reinforce that. You seem to interpret anything that isn't aligned with your starry eyed convictions as pure negativity 2) From my sporadic reading of roar article BTL comments over the years you have been eternally convinced with every new FFA strategic report being a genius sure path to greatness. Blind optimism is harmless until it has you lashing out at anyone who doesn't share it with you. The APL doing different things doesn't make it any more likely that thing are going to miraculously change from the status quo 3) Not wrong at all. What I think you are saying in a convoluted way, is how, for subscription services, the number of subscribers (and what they are paying) matters more than how much they are watching. That is consistent with what I said.

MI HHHHMMMMMMmmm Your first post Ch 10 news is not in the top 20... so what ... neither is it badly rating... in fact unlike your post says on every day I checked it was in the top 20, normally between 15 & 18. Your second post.. 1] Yes the post did have a lot of negative things about the 10 deal, but its owned by CBS and they have lots of smarts and lots of capital and lots of experience in the US re the MLS.... the broad push of the post was it won't work and you can't trust 10. 2] LOL you also I doubt have watched or studied what APL are doing... but any analysis of the CBS deal without looking at how different the APL is moving forward lacks credibility. Moreover is a lazy, outdated and ill informed. 3] Wrong, wrong, wrong... FTA remains with the same yard sticks, but streaming has a totally different approach in that they look at total numbers not what any particular game or match did.

Actually Tuesday channel 9 Brisbane had a segment in the sports news where Wally pre-limed the FFA Cup game between Power and Roar and had the Power players walking down the Bee Gees walk in Redcliffe. So the news is being spread Maximus Erectus

@Mid, it's doing my head in why when you wrote this "Two things nay make that three things" you didn't just change "two" to "three" and leave it at that? In terms of your three things 1) I can't see anyone who wrote anything remotely along the lines of "Channel 10 are not smart"....then the sentence morphed into "and it would add to growth" which made no sense. Roberto is just saying effectively that outcome is very uncertain 2) I'm sorry but it is your starry eyed optimism that is causing deviation from the rational analysis of Roberto and Paul, not the other way around. Of course the FA have a strategy. It doesn't make it any more likely to be successful than previous strategies. 3) TV ratings and subscriptions are still king across FTA, pay TV and streaming. Ultimately commercial value is derived from providing an advertising platform or getting payment for a service or both.

Max its ok. The over 60's on Channels 7 and 9 are not overly tech savvy. Isnt the AFL gf on this weekend? Not a single mention of it on a FTA channel. My point was, when channels align themselves to a sport...then that is who they will show. For years it was...oh they show AFL because ppl want to see it. Uhm well, not in Sydney.

And last nights news was wall to wall football reporting. Both mens with the FFA cup and W-League and Matildas game coming up. Not one story on AFL which might shock our Vic readers. Im sure on Channel 7 news it was nothing but AFL. And on 9 nothing but league.

I don't really know how as players that have been playjng the game usually since 5 years old still can't hit a proper shot on target. That was a pretty poor game last night. And just looked like a general lack of fitness as they moved it around really slow. Maybe it's the temperature or humidity where they play.

One could also comment that Channel Ten did a great job with the Big Bash, so well that Cricket Australia leveraged the BB and got a better deal off a TV competitor. So the ratings for the BB on Ten were excellent even surpassing those of the "bigger" FTA stations. I have no problem with channel 10 and the coverage for the FA Cup game Pennisula Power Vs Brisbane Roar was certainly better than Fox which in itself will bring more viewers.
