Dockers star Fyfe suffers another setback

By Oliver Caffrey / Wire

Fremantle captain Nat Fyfe has been struck down with a bacterial infection in another setback for the AFL star’s recovery from shoulder surgery.

The dual Brownlow medallist will have to be administered intravenous antibiotics for up to three weeks to treat the infection.

Fyfe underwent season-ending reconstructive surgery in late July and had recently gone backwards in his recovery, meaning he needed another operation last week.

The Dockers have not yet put a time frame on the 30-year-old midfielder’s return to training.

“Unfortunately, Nathan’s tests have indicated a bacterial infection, and as a result, he will undergo intravenous antibiotics over the next two to three weeks,” Dockers football boss Peter Bell said.

Sports opinion delivered daily

“He won’t be able to do much physically in the period the antibiotics are being administered intravenously.

“Nathan is optimistic and understands in particular the importance of the next two to three weeks to allow the IV antibiotics optimal effectiveness.

“We will advise a return to training date in due course, once there is more clarity around Nat’s recovery.”

Fyfe is crucial to Fremantle’s plans of returning to finals next season after a six-year absence.

The Dockers finished 11th last season, one win and percentage outside the top-eight.

You are choosing to ignore goals he has kicked from outside the 50, goals he has snapped from a pack, the many from an angle and the even more from 30 or 40 metres from negligible or no angle. 164 of them collectively. You just want to celebrate the misses. Footy fans will celebrate the hits. You are the bitter minority (all of you wearing black and yellow).

Yeah nah, Donny. 'Freos GF' a fairly typical example of Ffyffe's inability to convert at crucial times. Great player but not a match winner when it counts. If you can't see beyond the limited value of the stat you present as 'proof' you're choosing to remain ignorant. A total reliance on statistics is demonstration of a lack of understanding of our great game. Your use of hiding behind 'the rest of us' is feeble at best.

164 goals 134 points. I know you are in denial but the rest of us can understand that.

Oh, they will. Fyfe and Mundy are cream on the cake now. Fyfe is still the best player in the AFL but Freo can still do well even if he misses some games.

For Freo to make top 4 they need their best player, they need their leader. they won't make it without him and would struggle for top 8. the midfield would be so much stronger with him apart of it.

An historical inability to kick goals. Particularly at crucial times and in crucial games. Don't get me wrong, Donny. Love Ffyffey. But he can't kick a goal to save either himself or his side.

Perhaps surgery on his kicking leg would correct one particular issue, Donny!?

He's won a Brownlow since his first shoulder injury. I suspect operations don't return him to his previously injured state. Surgery probably corrects the issue.

Perhaps Fyfe may not play a lot of footy from here on. He has had shoulder injuries from very early in his career and the end may close for the champ.

Many of the key injuries have been collision issues. The costly "treatment" injuries were Sandi, Tabs, Bennell.

If you knew something about Freo, instead of just gainsaying, you'd have something to say. Consider Chanon's response by contrast. That's conversation. Yours is white noise.

I agree Don you have a talented list & some much needed continuity on the park will help your lads push deep but like Sven has suggested & going a tad further in why is the apparent cluster f..k injury count occur year after year is damning. Maybe 22’ will be different Don!
