REACTION: 'If they play like that against England they'll get a heap put on them'

By Tony Harper / Editor

The Wallabies need to get sharpen up their cohesion and discipline or face a significant defeat against England next week.

That’s the verdict of All Blacks legend Andrew Mehrtens – disputed by Wallabies coach Dave Rennie – after Scotland ended Australia’s five-game winning streak with a 15-13 win at Murrayfield on Monday (AEDT).

Australia were far from their best in beating Japan in their opening game of their Spring Tour and were all at sea at times against Scotland.

The Wallabies missed Quade Cooper and Samu Kerevi in the backline, but also struggled in the scrum, which Wallabies coach Dave Rennie described as “a mess”.

A yellow card to Allan Alaalatoa led to replacement by Taniela Tupou who left the field for a HIA and is in doubt for the England match next weekend.

England will be coming into the game off a 69-3 win over Tonga on Sunday.

“England are a side that can pull out an amazing performance,” Mehrtens said on Stan Sport.

“They’re always full of confidence. You know you’re going to get that against England.

“I worry a little bit for the Wallabies because if they keep muddling through like they have in these last two games, if they play like that again they’ll get a heap put on them.

“Hopefully they won’t play like that again.”

Rennie bristled at Mehrtens’ criticism, when asked about it by The Roar.

“He’s a smart man, Mehrts but I don’t agree with that assessment,” said Rennie.

“The Scottish are a strong team and it sounds like he’s disrespecting the ability of them. They were very competitive in the Six Nations. They lost by a late penalty to Ireland, they lost by one point to Wales – they win both those games they win the Six Nations.

“They are a really good side. We didn’t play anywhere near as well as we’d like to. We’ve got to be able to build pressure for longer.

“We got pinged a bit in possession from cleaning out and various other things and we have to make some shifts there. I thought we defended really well and created multiple turnovers and Scotland had a lot of possession.

“We’ve got more in us. We certainly need to be a lot better, and a lot better against England.”

French referee Romain Poite was prominent, and Rennie was struggling to understand some of his calls.

“I thought it was a bit of a mess. We’ll feedback directly to the referee. I guess it’s a tough area to adjudicate. As happens every week around the scrum, I certainly didn’t agree with a number of the decisions.”

But Wallabies fullback Andrew Kellaway said the Australians “can’t come out of those games and expect to win them on the back of the discipline we showed.

“Full credit to Scotland they were good but we let them into the game at pretty crucial times, breakdown penalties and things like that.

“You can’t play games like that and expect to win.

“It was a bit clunky and I’m not so sure why. The discipline didn’t help us. We didn’t really have an opportunity to string together phases, we were giving away penalties at break downs which wasn’t good enough and we need to be better.

“The positive is that it was narrow and close. Disicpline is what really kills us because it’s nobody’s fault but our own. If we tidy up the break down, tidy up that stuff we’ll put ourselves in a position to win the [England] game hopefully.”

Scotland coach Gregor Townsend was pleased his team overcame a tough period as Australia put on 10 unanswered points with Alalaatoa off the park.

“Staying in the fight and then taking the fight to the opposition in those last 10 and 15 minutes,” said Townsend when asked what pleased him most.

“It showed our conditioning, showed our depth of squad. Our bench came on and helped improve the team’s performance.

“And it was pleasing around our scrum. At times we were dominant there. Not every scrum but the majority of them.

“I loved the confidence of our players, not always accurate but they showed confidence to play. There was lots to get excited about but lots to work on as well.”

Mate you are joking. Such foresight that unlike Rassie, Rennie didn’t speak with the OS clubs to clear the way for them to play last year. Blueprint there but he didn’t follow it. Then we have the current half a’Ed system that sees performances like tonight. Dude is clueless.

It’s not Rennie who changed the win loss record it’s relaxing the OS player rules that has had that effect. Something that Rennie should have required to be scrapped like Rassie did. You gloss over the 3 nil drubbing from NZ without the OS players. Going to be a similar result against England this weekend and then Wales.

That’s one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard. Over Dave Rennie! Wow.. just .. wow. Best season by the wallabies in seven years. Climb the rankings to 3rd. Lose one game.. Talk about spit the dummy and throw your toys around

Absolutely. Anyone that pays attention to world rugby should have already known that this Scottish squad is one of their best in decades. That was one of their finest grinding wins they just banked.

I think he’s talking about the Calcutta Cup between England vs Scotland.. England haven’t won since 2017.. Yes he’s correct. England haven’t won that over Scotland since then.. As I’ve said before England had only won 1 game against Scotland in the past 4 tests.. Scotland team is better than a lot of people assume.

Agree with this. Dan McKellar needs to be head coach with Stephen Larkham, George Gregan and Michael Chieka assistants.

This loss is on Rennie - 1. AAA and JS at the end of their careers and losing scrum power. Rennie done nothing to bring on younger guys who should be blooded in this type of tour. Faamisili, Elof if he commits to Aus etc. Robertson is too small for international rugby. With Toupu out we are back to the 90s with losing games as a result of scrum penalties. 2. Paisami is a liability and played enough tests to know whether he is up to it and he isn’t. Doesn’t keep defensive shape and flys out for the big hit, low skills and a hot head eg the FR clean out and the set up 2 from the line with missed tackles. Just get a cool head in there to support JOC who can tackle like a Curtis Rona or even Toomua can score with good play design and recycling the ball. Or even give Foketi a go. He at least has the size to play 12. 3. Hasn’t developed back up 10s at super level as Noah has now had enough tests to show he is not up to it. Eg Harrison not the best ball runner but higher conversion percentage and better kicking game than both Noah and JOC. 4. Discipline and lineout % TBD but Latu is a better player than both of the other hookers and gives better jackle options. 5. Need to bring Skelton on earlier in the game. He is fit and plays well past 60 in France. He wasn’t given enough ball. 6. Unsure if hodge is injured but he should have been made a 15 years ago. His kicking game takes a lot of pressure off the team. Instead wasted time with Banks etc. 7. Need to bring first receiver closer to the ruck with a pod in support. Too many wide passes from the base with insufficient clean out support so too many turnovers. 8. Play far too lateral. Not enough pick and go from the forwards. Have good ball runners in there particularly if you bring In Faamisili, Skelton and Latu. Set that up more and then go wider, particularly given how weak Paisami is in the carry. 9. Play more % rugby with focus on exits and finding touch rather than kick to compete. Kick to compete is fine if the kicks are spot on but if they are too long or too short it’s a long day eg against NZ back 3. England have similarly good back 3. With Arnold in there we have a world class lineout. Play to it. 10. Coach to take the hit and recycle rather than pushing the pass, particularly in the forwards. Fainga'a etc do that all the time and mess up plays. Rennie is one of the major problems for the team.

I thought Nic White was atrocious yesterday. He made it seriously hard work for our receivers, balls going wide and to ground far too frequently. Tate needs to start for me. Arnold was the only of the french 3 I’d retain. Skelton had no impact off the bench, and Beale was poor. Our hands yesterday were shocking. As much as we didn’t get any favours from the refereeing, we still should have won the game. Our mistakes lost the game. Scotland got a plucky win and good on them.

I think McDermott needs to start with JOC. We need a playmaking 9 as our 10 12 combo aren't going to do much whoever you put there from this squad. At least McDermott can got out and slow the defence, draw players, run and create. JOC hasn't played for months so wasn't expecting much from him to be fair but he will need to be a lot better in the next two game. There's lots of issues, not just 10 and 12. Forwards were also dreadful. Rennie again last week saying AAA is world class, he was so far from that yesterday it is beyond belief. Scotland didn't even have their best prop and lock playing. Valetini went missing. No idea how Rennie gets this bunch up to threaten England and Wales after the last two performances.

It’s a possibility. He may also have stopped listening to their incessant whinging. Perhaps they would have been better served by being respectful and picking and choosing what they questioned rather than every decision that went against Oz.
