Dolphins raid Storm ranks to secure first big-name recruit

By Troy Whittaker / Editor

Queensland Origin forward Felise Kaufusi has been unveiled as the first marquee signing for the Dolphins ahead of their entrance to the NRL in 2023.

After missing out on targets including Kaufusi’s Storm teammates Cameron Munster and Christian Welch, the league’s 17th franchise announced they’d signed the second-rower to a three-year deal on Friday.

“It is imperative the Dolphins build a squad that contains players of representative calibre and Felise certainly fits that mould,” Dolphins NRL team CEO Terry Reader said.

“He has played 12 Origin matches for Queensland as well as representing Australia, so will bring some important experience to the playing group we are building to debut in the competition.

“The fact that he grew up in Bundaberg is also a positive for Queensland’s newest professional sporting team.

“Felise has been part of a very successful era for the Storm club in recent years, so we are excited about the leadership and strong work ethic he will bring to the Dolphins.”

A two-time premiership winner with Melbourne, the 29-year-old will join uncapped hooker Harrison Graham on the Dolphins’ books.

The 20-year-old, who is currently on a train-and-trial deal at the Broncos, has impressed in the Queensland Cup for Wynnum Manly and agreed to a development contract with the Dolphins.

Dolphins recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan recently spoke of the importance of “getting those first one or two [signings] over the line” as they aim to build a competitive roster.

“If they’re marquee type players, then that’s going to attract other players here,” O’Sullivan said.

“There will be a little bit of fear of the unknown, but I look at it as the excitement of the unknown. That’ll be the biggest challenge.

“Apart from that, we’ve got 12 months to get it right. There isn’t too much negativity or problems that we’re going to face because we inherit no baggage.

“We’re coming with a clean slate and we’ve just got to get 30 players to sign in 12 months, that’s all.”

Having notched up 152 NRL games since debuting for the Storm in 2015, the Dolphins will hope that Kaufusi is the first of many big-name recruits.

The four-time Kangaroos representative will reunite with coach Wayne Bennett, who he played under during Queensland’s famous 2020 upset Origin series victory.

The Dolphins are still in the running for Storm hooker Brandon Smith, who recently toured their facilities. Smith has also been linked to the Titans, Roosters and Cowboys.

If Redcliffe had all their ducks lined up HY their first signing should have been the club captain and a draw card for other signings.

Well Bennett fixed Sammy’s grub play I suppose. Retired him to buy a Queenslander ????

And yet I remain untriggered Rob. I believe the more QLDers the Redcliffe Dolphins can have playing in their inaugural 30-man squad, the better for the development of the clubs' culture. You know, that whole siege mentality, us against them, QLD inferiority complex thing. Despite being a grub, I also agree it was a good signing for the Dolphins, who need experienced forwards who are the products of one of the best systems in the game. I just hope that under Bennett, Kaufusi will eliminate the dog shots from his game.

I figure the decision to close the forum for comments was due to the fact it had the potential to attract tr0lling and spiral out of control. I find it presumptive in the extreme that there can be so many opinions based on little to no available facts. There are only sketchy reports at this point. Personally, I wish these stories weren't run by the media (not just The ROAR) until more details are available and more is known. It only encourages people to take a shot at their 15 minutes of fame, as predicted by Andy Warhol. Players are always presumed guilty until proven innocent, and then that opens the whole can of worms where the default position is to always believe the accusers, without even knowing the facts or having eyewitness testimony to confirm what actually happened.

"If this incident had been a Souths Sydney player I can only imagine the personal insults that would being hurled the Bunnies way if it were Sam Burgess, Latrell Mitchell or Cody Walker." I could argue you're both right and wrong, and wrong and right. "If this incident had been a Souths Sydney player I can only imagine the personal insults that would being hurled the Bunnies way" and pause. Kamikamica's profile would be about in line with Tatola's (there or there abouts), and I'd imagine the response would be about the same. "if it were Sam Burgess, Latrell Mitchell or Cody Walker" and pause. Are we still comparing apples with apples (clubs with clubs) or the attention gained from a cardinal and murtle Lamborghini to a purple Mini, and claiming the only difference is the colour?

"story as comments are now closed" Yes, closing an article to comments 5 minutes after it was posted is getting tiresome. I don't know what the thinking behind this is but they are going to drive people away from the Roar.

I can see the Cowboys losing a few especially in the backrow department. Condon, Luki, Nani, Gilbert, Dunn will all get a carrot thrown their way. I wouldn’t put a line through Ryan James and Ash Taylor looking for run either.

GB, Sammy was a wonderful grub also. Didn’t miss a head whacking when possible. His shot on Moylan was a burger special. Well done Dolphins, Felise a good, strong, experienced back rower from south east Queensland.

GB, "Especially when they conduct trials by media and argue on the night how one players (Latrell) should get a lengthy suspension when others like Nathan Cleary and Issiah Yeo “shouldn’t have anything to worry about” and then “Hey presto!” nothing happens." That doesn't necessarily mean it's the tail wagging the dog. I'd argue on many/maybe most occasions it has more to do with the fact that the commentators, often ex players, people that make a living from RL (professionals) can gauge the severity, therefore the expected penalty as it happens/whilst they are commentating the game, and "hey presto" they called it right.

Here's an idea out of the box jimmmy. What about a few recently retired QLD champions come out of retirement for the 2023 season to give the Dolphins a leg up? I'm thinking of Cam Smith, Billy Slater and Corey Parker. Darius Boyd can do the game a favour and stay retired.

Pity I missed out on commenting the Kamikamica charged by police, stood down by Storm over 'alleged incident involving a woman' story as comments are now closed. I was trying to reply to no one in particular's comment; "That Storm “culture” is having a cracking off season". Clearly, this is not part of any clubs culture but rather the poor behaviour and regrettable life choices of individuals who put themselves above the game, their club, their fans, their family and their teammates. I just wish others on this forum could be as balanced and rational in their opinion. If this incident had been a Souths Sydney player I can only imagine the personal insults that would being hurled the Bunnies way if it were Sam Burgess, Latrell Mitchell or Cody Walker.

NoIP, I don't see things in terms of a conspiracy against any club in particular but rather a system that ridiculously inconsistent and clearly seems to treat certain clubs and players preferentially. Like I said to Phil (above); You have to ask questions about a system that is so often influenced by the sympathies and opinions of NRL broadcasters and the judiciary system that are filled by former players. Especially when they conduct trials by media and argue on the night how one players (Latrell) should get a lengthy suspension when others like Nathan Cleary and Issiah Yeo “shouldn’t have anything to worry about” and then “Hey presto!” nothing happens. If they were average players and especially if they played for a team out of the finals both Cleary and Yeo would have been suspended. Lucky for them the game is refereed on personalities and the colour of a player’s jersey or who are mates with the coach.

Like I said at the time, my disappointment was aimed at Latrell more than the process that rubbed him out of the 2021 finals. That said, and be fair about this, you have to ask questions about a system that is so often influenced by sympathies and opinions of NRL broadcasters and the judiciary system that are filled by former players. Especially when they conduct trials by media and argue on the night how one players (Latrell) should get a lengthy suspension when others like Nathan Cleary and Issiah Yeo “shouldn’t have anything to worry about” and then “Hey presto!” nothing happens. . And if he was wearing a maroon and white jersey HY I'm sure you would be looking for the silver lining mate. I was pretty outspoken on my views and intense disappointment in Latrell at the time HY. I feel the same way when Cody Walker forgets to play football and plays street football instead. As a supporter, what can we do mate? The Rabbitohs have thrown their lot in with him so I have to hope for the best out a player that always ends up putting himself before the team.
