'Back to 50-50': Even WA Cricket CEO is now admitting Perth could lose Ashes Test

By Justin Chadwick / Wire

Perth’s hopes of hosting the fifth Ashes Test is no longer a lock, with WA Cricket chief executive Christina Matthews now rating it as just a 50-50 chance.

Matthews had been bullish up until recently about the prospect of the match being played at Optus Stadium, even going as far as saying Tasmania had wasted the ink in its printer in attempting to steal the Test.

But Matthews was far more reserved on Saturday, with fears now growing WA’s tough border stance could result in the contest being moved.

“I’d probably say at the moment I’m 50-50,” Matthews told ABC Radio’s National Grandstand program.

“I’d gone as high as 97 per cent, but I’ve gone back to 50-50. We’ll wait and see.”

The WA State Government would need to relax some of the current restrictions in place in order for the Test to go ahead in Perth.

One complicating factor is the sheer size of the broadcast team, which combined with the DRS system is bigger than what was seen at the AFL grand final.

“It’s a matter of whether cricket can meet those demands or not,” Matthews added.

“One of the difficulties for cricket is just the high level of technology that’s needed around the broadcast and the number of people that are needed around the broadcast compared to an AFL broadcast.

“It’s one thing getting the players in (but) it’s another thing getting the people who have to broadcast.”

As it stands, the Test is fixtured to start on January 14 – just five days after the fourth Test in Sydney is scheduled to end.

With WA set to open its border in late January or early February, WA premier Mark McGowan has shown a willingness of late to relax the restrictions required for interstate sporting teams to play in Perth.

The Perth Scorchers will host two BBL games in December, while the Glory have put in a bid with the WA Government to play two A-League Men’s game in Perth in early January.

Ends justifying the means apparently for Andrews! He was bloodyminded from Day one and has always been a loose cannon with an effective propaganda machine. If the Federal Government medical advice was that 70% voluntary gave the country effective coverage with at-risk groups covered and a herd immunity which had no over burden on hospitals then the states who've followed that are proof. Andrews led the political backlash by immediately walking out of 'national cabinet' and announcing 80% and then, why not 90%. Stupidity which has led to thousands getting a vaccine they don't believe in for the reduction of longevity or severity of a viral infection, but just to ensure they can sit inside a cafe or at a sporting event/concert. Amazing how many of them are angry at those who won't take THESE vaxes, when they 'had to'. Easily the most divisive issue in decades and has shown how fragile our democracy, rights and sadly, even friendships are. The disgusting thing is forcing those who natural immunity to vax just to get a tick on a phone and exclude those who have vaxes from other sources or are involved in Australian vax trials. Business will be the breaking point. Passive resistance from passports will happen sooner rather than later, and even the 'get a tick' vaxxed will break as seen in Israel as the tick is taken away because a booster is due, but unavailable to your age group. Politics, not science and Andrews and McGowan are 'gold standard' in that sphere! Sport and the Arts will be the loser.

Absolutely agree . I’ve driven put to regional pre and post lockdowns the vax attitudes and restriction enforcement yet there are huge anti vax sentiments in western regions and high density ethnic religious areas . I’ve only seen articles on wa indicating indigenous vax is lower on wa and regional distribution is slower . Indicating Perth itself may be post 90 percent vax by jan 11 . 95 percent is likely a pipe dream in wa or take many many months and likey to get 95 quicker of reopening and some.cases occur . It’s not like the state is waiting on vax delivery

Yeah, hilarious, Paul! You’re right, voters get a chance….every 4 years, Victorian debt at 35 times GDP (from a private conversation with a 15 year sitting State parliamentarian) and a Premier who hasn’t consulted with caucus or his cabinet about draconian restrictions in more than 12 months (from a sitting Labor parliamentarian) seems like a fact rather than ideological bias, but apparently you’ll be the judge of that! WA is a strange example as they voted McGowan back in, but that was about a basket case opposition, but as you well know, many politicians take a large win as carte blanche to do what they want, hence demonstrations in Perth streets, not what the voter put them there for. If CA decides 14 day isolation with a 5 day turnaround between Tests is going to be difficult for them to manage, then the breaking point for political stupidity in the middle of a term isn’t the voter, but untenable business environments. The fact that double vaxxed and covid tested people are held to ransom by that isn’t in the voters realm. I suspect you know that though.

Andrews has taken covid pandemic to extremes that were inhumane at times . No argument from me there insult. Half the state is apathetic to the thirty percent that truely suffered and weren't gauging job keeper. Wa has different issues sure but I've been merely talking about a post 80 percent atagi environment there versus the argument of their so call unprepared hopsital system which McGowan has had 20 months to prepare for but will blame federal on that front no doubt , not that Scotty from marketing has helped any state other than nsw

Insult I lived in Melbourne all 24 months of this and know it well and know the regional v metro differences. Andrews has been appauling on many levels . I don't have state bias in my mind . Perth will be higher in vax than some of it's regional communities we also know cases are not hospitalisations and hospitalized have comorbidities or treat numbers that are also flu or anxiety driven due to fear and panic politiicians and media have instilled which has been established in email and gov advisory correspondence exposed

He hasn’t prepared wa hospitals Paul perhaps you should vote against him , he’s had 20 months and apparently on here I’m told they struggle without covid but hang on wa is the state that doesn’t need federal assistance and is self sufficient . Doesn’t appear so if it’s hospital systems lag well behind other states

Let alone I’m sure its the regions which are lagging compared to Perth. Not sure about Perth, Pierro, but complete opposite in Victoria. The regions are and have been 90+% vaxxed for weeks, Melbourne, the most locked down jurisdiction in the world is less than 85, with the Melbourne LGA at 73% double, so he's been punishing Victorians for his own city sticking their fingers in their ears, rather than a needle in their arm. Melbourne is still recording 1100+ cases a day, but he opened up from lockdown. This isn't science and hasn't been since mid last year, when the obsession became about vaxxes which turn out to be leaky, but in true political arrogance are being doubled down on. Paul knows full well that there isn't an election in Victoria for 12 months and the damage done is immeasurable already and set to continue. In the mean time Australia and Melbourne in particular are losing credibility with global business and sporting organisations and WA are heading down the same track from political stupidity. Debt in Victoria is currently 35 times GDP and rising, people who care, will vote against that, WHEN the opportunity comes around. What private enterprise and world sporting events are still held in arrogant political jurisdictions is another question.

Not sure on that Paul the science is 80 percent and reopen. Bottom line. WA is making political calls not scientific ones. Australias targets are the worlds highest. Eventually once the people have followed that Science advised target and they will have pre xmas in WA then it reverts back to political power and fear driven politics . McGowan is actually demonstrating this if he won’t reopen. Moreover they can mandate vaccinated only at Perth match and on incoming passengers. There is indirect damage being done on many levels where McGowan and co direct away from world wide scientific advisory let alone ATAGI which has set even more extreme limits. WA folk will realize theres no difference between 85 to 90 percent percentiles when they reopen. Let alone I’m sure its the regions which are lagging compared to Perth. Time to nationalise and stop this ridiculous seven island policy within our country contrary to the scientific consensus . If the variants increase mortality via factual evidence and get around the vaccine there are impressive treatments coming. McGowan is indoctrinating unnesecessary fear to keep political control and votes if he goes beyond 80 percent reopening let alone 85 to 90 percent. January 10 is 6 weeks away you won’t get any more vaccinated after that date in reality.

Jeff the difference is the gabba test is now. WA test is a six plus week away and rates will be 85 percent plus (maybe 90 percent) well above national recommendations and they can place mandates on incoming staff to be fully vaxxed. The deal with any state is protect the hospital system if incapacitated and vax up to 80 percent one of the worlds highest standards. The people have vaccinated. Im sure the regions are lagging but not perth. In January WA won’t be able to protect any more people in reality than it has and its not sufficient to quote new variants now unless the mortality rates increase we are one country. Delaying the inevitable with WA for no proven reason except fear politics and control via socialistic mindsets. Im no fan of scotty from marketing either. At some point the country must nationalise and that time until further notice is pre xmas. given the data and medical advice.

Let me guess......you read The Australian and watch SkyNews?

2021-11-30T03:52:10+00:00

I think the MCG would like to have a word with you regarding worst test pitches haha. But I agree nonetheless, mediocre flat pitch that barely spins, and a nice juicy green monster awaits in Tassie to show us who the real best ashes team is. Im really hoping its 2-2 heading into the final test. I think England might get up if its a very green wicket, with Broad and Clouderson licking their lips

Vaccinations rates are irrelevant, this is to do with political control. Andrews in Victoria has publicly stated that he wants powers because boosters will be needed next year and other variants may present. So he is going to force lockdowns to ensure that the population takes his boosters. It is obvious that passports will not expire in that environment. Covid normal though is treating it like any virus with vaccinations for at risk and open state borders where these time restrictions are irrelevant too. Business will be the only realistic breaking point for arrogant politicians who never had science in mind with border closures.
