'Little interest in the club's existence': Bulls need to act quickly to survive

By The Crowd / Roar Guru

Football fans in Australia are wondering when the Macarthur Bulls farce will eventually end.

The Bulls were sitting on top of the ladder but still attracted less than 1500 tonight at Campbelltown Stadium for a derby game against Sydney FC.

While the Bulls announced a crowd of 4800, the ticket window at the ground confirmed less than 1500 fans attended, including members.

The crowd at the Jets game was also less than 1000, whereas the Bulls announced 2600.

The one thing that stands out about Macarthur is their prices. The cheapest junior tickets tonight were nearly $30, while the cheapest family tickets cost $92.50 (two adults and two juniors).

Charging such prices for post-Christmas games in a COVID year is ridiculous and reeks of a club that is desperate to salvage every dollar it can.

To add to the laughing stock, the club’s social media engagement is bordering on farcical. There is little or no engagement on Twitter, while the club’s Facebook presence is minute, to say the least.

With the club losing star players in the off-season and coach Ante Milicic rumoured to be leaving for an overseas opportunity, the ability to attract players in the future is going to be challenging.

Sports opinion delivered daily

While Paramount+, the streaming service engaged by the APL, has done little to attract interest, the Bulls themselves have not done much to engage with the community.

With COVID a major issue, this is somewhat understandable, but the club has been around for three years now. There is little interest from southwest Sydney for the club to even exist.

The Bulls have failed to reveal members numbers for the two seasons they have existed, a sign they have something to hide.

While Macarthur has owners who have deep pockets, one must wonder how long they will keep funding this operation.

Macarthur is home to more than 10,000 footballers. The region is one of the fastest growing in Australia, yet the club has struggled to tap into this potential – and while COVID is a convenient excuse, it won’t work forever.

The Bulls need to make some moves, fast. With a potential national second division coming and the APL looking to expand, there must be concerns among governing authorities as to how long they will survive.

MacArthur Bulls are based in Campbelltown( stadium near Minto)- which is south - west Sydney. It’s very different from Western Sydney, which would only be known to locals. Also the MacArthur ‘growth’ region everyone talks about is in Camden - Liverpool plains. It is a completely different world to Campbelltown. People who live there exist in a different world. They don’t cross the freeway to go to Campbelltown. The MacArthur Bulls are really the Campbelltown Bulls. Campbelltown is rugby league territory and a small satellite town on the edge of Sydney. It is already developed and has a culture of its own. Why the Aleague thought this would be the ideal place for a football team is beyond my understanding.

Gold Coast could serve much more people then a Southside/Logan Team could besides Gold Coast has a Stadium Southside/Logan does not

I really think Brissy needs two distinct teams. We already have a friendly rivalry North vs south side. If we had a Northside based team in Moreton, they might even attract the sunny coast to support, while a Southside team based in Logan might pick up some of the Gold Coast crowed. No central Brisbane team, north vs south could work.

Temporary Seating still costs money and Football is just not something that has political Support from either of the Majors because Football isnt a Vote Winner in QLD like League is Sunny Coast along with Christchurch I reckon are Darkhorse's for expansion in General that no one talks about and Sunny Coast Stadium is getting upgraded for the Olympics the only thing I think that holds it back is crap public transport locally and to/from Brisbane which the GC has also the Dolphins will be playing 1 or 2 home games a season up there North QLD I think could work if you get a owner willing to bankroll it themselves and take on losses for sometime as Sponsors will be hard to find, Townsville just got a Shiny new Stadium and Cairns is due to get upgrades to Barlow Park for the Olympics'

BRISBANE: Could they use Perry Park with temporary stands to test fan reception for a future upgrade? That might be one way to make the case for it. PERMANENT DESIGN PLANS (PCYC left untouched): https://static.ffx.io/images/$width_768/t_resize_width/q_86%2Cf_auto/c80f038ec350752bf2faca1951237b5d25b2aa0e OTHER EXPANSION OPTIONS (no current bids): Sunshine Coast North Queensland *Sunshine Coast has 350,000 people and is projected to reach 510,000 by 2041 yet it has no professional teams except in Super Netball.

Strikers Sub Lease Perry Park from the YCMA who operate Perry Park and the Council own Perry Park Strikers Train in Logan BTW and they just got relegated IF Perry Park got a redevelopment the Strikers would get kicked out anyway I agree Redcliffe is a Long way to go for some I live on the Northside and on PT CBUS is about the same distance as Moreton Daily Stadium through driving Redcliffe is a lot closer but the Reality is there is nowhere else for the Roar to play in Greater Brisbane as Suncorp is Full and to expensive, QSAC is a DUMP, Gabba and the Reserve are the wrong shape and QRU operate Ballymore who the Barkies pissed off years ago There are Roar fans on the Southside and the Gold Coast who are likely going do defect to a Gold Coast team when it happens due to a combination of the Barkies Running the Club into the Ground and CBUS being a lot eaiser to get to A Gold Coast team will happen with the Backing of Jordan Gardner also would not be Surprised if Rebecca Frizzle (Co Owner of the Titans) was to get involved with a Womens team either as she is very big on growing womens sport in the region

And of course perry park is the Strikers home ground as well….. but Redcliffe is a long way to go for people in those other greater Brisbane areas you mentioned. It’d have to be 50ks or 30+ train stops from Cleveland or Woodridge to Kippa Ring station. Fruitless argument really. A league struggling with current expansion and we’re talking of a risky Gold Coast team. Won’t happen.

Logan is close to the Gold Coast and its super easy to get to the GC from Logan you might as well have a team on the GC hell I would not be surprised if a GC team used the Roars old Training Facilities in Logan at least for a while Ipswich is Rugby League Heartland plus with the Lions new Training Base/AFLW Stadium currently under construction the Region is Lost to League and Aussie Rules Redcliffe is a Part of Greater Brisbane just like the rest of the Moreton Bay Region, Ipswich, Logan and the Redlands, A Redevelopment of Perry Park will never happen for several reasons those being lack of political will as Football is not a Vote Winner in QLD, no use for Perry Park at the Olympics and Perry Park is owned by the LNP Controlled Council while the State Goverment is Labor and state funds would need to be used

Don't be so sure on that with the Roar at Redcliffe for the foreseeable future a lot of Roar fans on the Southside and Logan could feel disenfranchised with the Roar and defect to a Gold Coast team Hell I live on the Northside and on Public Transport it takes me the same amount of time to get to CBUS as it does to Moreton Daily Stadium

Macarthur is a fast growing region, it's Western Sydney therefore, WSW territory. There's only one team for the people that live there.

Very sorry to hear the woes of the MacArthur Bulls. I had no idea, but that’s not surprising given the current broadcast arrangements, where trying to find coverage can be a bit too much for a borderline fan and I’m certainly not signing up for another streaming service. They must be given a decent chance though.

The GC makes sense, although it can be hard to get support there. Possibly more potential in the more working class areas of Logan and Ipswich. But vitally important a 10k stadium built in their area. No good travelling to Brisbane. On the subject of stadiums, Redcliffe is a good venue, but it’s not Brisbane. Perry Park is the home of Brisbane football and should be revamped to a decent standard. Great location.

No one from any part of Brisbane will support a team from the Gold Coast. You can bank on that.

the writing is on the wall the a league is a complete failure. millions wasted and will continue to be wasted and for what? they destroyed any chance this game has for success in this country when they ethnic cleansed the nsl teams and yes there were 9 not 5. in any case it was racist and discriminatory and fans have left in droves never to come back because of it. who are the a leagues target audience now? the afl crowd or cricket lol

"While the Bulls announced a crowd of 4800, the ticket window at the ground confirmed less than 1500 fans attended, including members." Would the ticket window numbers be for tickets sold at the ground on the day and not include online sales? Or members, for that matter, who would simply scan their cards at the turnstiles rather than going to the window?

"Macarthur is home to more than 10,000 footballers. The region is one of the fastest growing in Australia, yet the club has struggled to tap into this potential" If a club needs to depend on local juniors as a mainstay of its crowds, then it was not worth creating, and most definitely is not worth preserving. A pro league is part of the entertainment industry. If it cannot attract new audiences and do so regularly then it falls into the category of the Walking Dead.
