Glenn Maxwell puts the BIG in Big Bash with bonkers record-breaking innings

By News / Wire

Glenn Maxwell has thumped the highest score in BBL history, whacking an unbeaten 154 as the Melbourne Stars launched an all-out assault on the Hobart Hurricanes.

Maxwell smashed 22 boundaries and four sixes in the most brutal display of hitting in the competition’s history, as the Stars set a record total of 2-273 at the MCG.

The Stars’ total was also the third highest in all franchise and international T20 cricket worldwide, beaten only by efforts from Afghanistan and Czech Republic.

Maxwell’s individual score from 64 balls also ranked ninth.

The superstar limited-overs player dominated the Hurricanes all round the wicket, with the shot of the night an outrageous switch-hit flick over fly-slip for six.

His century was the second-fastest in BBL history, coming in 41 balls and just two shy of Craig Simmons’s 39-ball effort in 2014.

The right-hander helped take 21 off one D’Arcy Short over, while he hit five boundaries for 22 runs off another from Sandeep Lamichhane

Maxwell was not alone with Marcus Stoinis also finishing unbeaten on 75 from 31 balls.

On the same night he lost his record for the highest score in BBL history, Stoinis also showed the Hurricanes no mercy.

He launched six balls over the rope, also taking 26 from a Tim David over as no Hurricanes bowler went at an economy rate below 10 runs.

The knock came after the Stars bowed out of finals contention after the Hurricanes’ win over the Melbourne Renegades on Tuesday, leaving them in sixth place.

It comes after the club was forced to play two games without the bulk of their squad while unavailable with COVID-19.

Hobart are set to face Adelaide in an eliminator on Friday regardless of the MCG result, but could face a serious psychological hit after the onslaught from the Stars’ batters.

The finals match will also be played in neutral territory in Melbourne, after Cricket Australia confirmed the first week of finals will be staged in the Victorian capital.

Next week’s preliminary final and decider can then be hosted on home grounds, with the first-placed Scorchers to use Marvel Stadium while locked out of Western Australia.

Tganks for asking. I'm back at my son's. They told me yesterday that l had an E coli infection with some other bacteria compounding it. That was causing the massive pain attacks that'd last for 10 minutes every 90 minutes. That went on for 4 days. I could hardly watch the cricket. ------- And the hospital l was in handled things very badly. A teacher mate said get to a major city because you won't the right help needed in a regional area. So l need scans on enlarged prostate. It has registered cancer before but I've got over it with ayurveda remedies and diets before but the meds were very dear. Getting my own place will be important. Ironically l missed out on a place whilst in hospital. I've just now have been able to rent as I'm getting some help to get into a place. A mate just bought me a lot of the 4 meds so that's good and appreciated.

It's a region yes, continent no. Yet you'll find some in Latin America and Europe do. The irony there is that there is no Europe or Asia but rather Eurasia. ---- Pssst, don't tell Jeff, he's just us smart-@rsas us.

How can you? In fact, I was under the impression that Oceania is not so much the continent; rather, the continental region, including New Zealand, Papua and numerous Pacific islands. When I refer to the continent, I generally call it "The Australian Continent", which usually happens when when I'm working and I have to explain to people the meaning (with my, albeit, limited understanding) of AHD.

I like Maxwell but it would be criminally irresponsible to pick anyone if they are hitting centuries like that. That bowling was disgustingly bad. You wouldn't expect that garbage in test cricket.

Trouble is Maxie could score a dozen centuries like that and they still wouldn't pick him in the test side . He's a natural at T20 and is better off playing that locally and in IPL . Some guys have their papers marked and unfortunately he's one of them.

John , Don't start me Andy Maher knows as much about cricket as his mates Mick and Sam but he also must have nude photos of someone at CH 7 . I don't mind Lisa at least she knows about cricket . They've stuck us with Mr Happy Jason Richardson and I'm sure Hamish will get a gig sooner than later and now Rebecca " the mouth " Maddern is at 7 she be telling the boys what it's about .

“The depth of commentary”. Motormouth Lisa talking to Maxwell as he was about to bowl earlier this week & don’t forget Expert Andy Maher. Thanks to whoever invented the mute button. Cringeworthy.

It was embarrassing wasn't it.... What was overlooked in the midst of Maxwell going troppo was how easy Stoinis was having it as well. The bowling was just appalling.

So is the depth of commentary. They were carrying on like it was Bradman destroying the 80s West Indies bowling attack.

Focusing on Maxwell's dig for a bit. Good knock, but the bowling was absolutely village. The amount of rank long hops drifting down the leg side that Glenn Maxwell just pulled to fine leg was like playing "Super International Cricket" on the SNES. The depth of the BBL is pretty dire.
