AFL fantasy 2022: Five players you must buy

By Gabe F / Roar Rookie

In 2022, AFL fantasy seems bigger than ever.

Major players look for a great return from injury, and the big fantasy guns are ready to explode. This is all you need to know about fantasy this year.

1. Jack Steele and Touk Miller
These players had astounding 2021 years, averaging well over 110 a week. It is possible to have a team with both of these gems, but it will set your salary cap back a heck of a lot.

Both cost over a million. It’s still a very tempting deal, as these guys can do wonders for the team.

Picture a starting midfield of Jack Steele, Scott Pendlebury and Nat Fyfe. Pendlebury and Fyfe can be amazing at their best, 90-95 players, but they are very injury prone. Both did their legs last year, and will look to return.

But both are ageing, and they could possibly retire mid-season. If they don’t fire on all cylinders, you need a reliable, fit player who can change whether you can get 2000 points a week.

Steele and Miller can turn a game on its head in the AFL, but in fantasy, they are lethal.

2. James Sicily
Absolutely everyone is talking about whether Sicily can come back and make 90 a week after doing his ACL in 2020. I personally think he can do it with flying colours.

Whenever he plays, he gets lots of the ball in defence, and can venture forward and score a few if need be.

At a cheap price, he can be very good in defence. As long as he stays fit, and doesn’t get suspended, he should take off again to those 2019 heights.

3. Jason Horne-Francis and Nick Daicos
These promising draft picks seem to be the real deal. A lethal six and seven combo, these two are expected to score 80s in their first year of AFL.

Horne-Francis, having the number one draft pick hanging above his head, will be eager to perform in the early rounds, so he is a keeper.

Daicos is already said to have the best kick in the Magpies’ team, and he will be a gun of a rebound midfielder.

Being draftees, these two are dirt cheap, so buy them while you can. Keep these two in the line-up for a while, and watch them progress into some solid players.

AFL fantasy is going to be at its best this year. With these strategic pieces of advice, your team could get off to a great start in 2022.

Nah...of course I agree with you. I remember when Robbie first started playing, I was saying to mates that he plays like Gary Jr. His career wasn't far off. Could have been deployed better by Port over his career. Nevertheless, if he is free of injury, that's how good Conigs is... or can be.

Robbie is Ports best ever player, coaches award winner which is better than the Brownlow, 4 time all Oz, 4 time B&F, 5 X showdown medallist and all round champion of the game. Not sure how Cogs' highlight package would look against Robbie's either. Coniglio got dropped last year, for form no less, nuff said.

I think he is. 3rd or 4th in a Brownlow 3 or 4 years ago?

I'm going all players with uplift potential this year, no Grundy's or Miller's, pity Walsh got injured

Yeah l had Dunkley last year also but will give him another chance, Duncan will be his replacement if he doesn't score well. Dusty has burnt me in the past, can really be hit and cold with his scoring but at a cheaper price will be worth it.

I like Draper a lot, both for fantasy and a footy player. Might swap Willie R for Stengel, I'll keep an eye on them in the pre-season. Dunkley let me down last year so I've gone for Duncan and Dusty, $680k for dusty, Bargain

I thought about Witts but apparently he may not be ready for round 1 - he's a watch in the preseason games. I'm sitting with Grundy at the moment - word is he's looking very fit this year. If Witts does well in the preseason I'll bring him in.

At Freo, Young will give brilliant value as a defender, as will Chapman who will score goals.

Fyfe didn't do his leg. He did his shoulder. Apart from when he broke it, his legs have never let him down. Knees, hammies, calf muscles, ankles...all strong.

Usually l only have a couple of premiums in the midfield and then balance it out. I went with 4 premium priced players in my mid plus Dunkley in the forward line. l think a few of the first round draft picks will get a game early, well l hope so anyway. I usually balance it up as much as possible but have put in a lot of those players in my team this year Put in Sicily, Haynes, Coniglio and Stengle as my bargain buys which helped out a fair bit Witt's is a good selection, l went with Darcy and Draper as my rucks with Max Lynch on the bench. I am trying not to change it too much before the start of the season like l normally do.

I've gone for Preuss and Witt's in the ruck. Have gone lesser priced players through the middle this year. Yeo, M Crouch, L Neale with Mitchell as C and the two draft picks as well as mid/fwd Taranto. Need those price risers.

Good article, have all these players in my side. Sean Darcy should be another lock in the ruck. Have Steele, Miller, Mitchell and Parish as my big four in the midfield. Had Walsh but replaced him with Steele. Coniglio in the midfield should be another certainty at such a cheap price.
