Why I fell in love with the Cronulla Sharks

By Broken Shoulder / Roar Rookie

I didn’t understand what league was. I was part of a family of rugby union and mostly AFL fans but this other game that lived down the road always intrigued me.

I have my dad to thank for that. Still a diehard Carlton supporter, God bless him. He knew this little nine-year-old needed to experience what the other game was all about so he took me down to Suncorp Stadium to watch the Broncos play.

At this point, I have to say, I had already watched State of Origin although it was heavily influenced by Roy and HG.

This ritual was soon to be banned by my mother. It always warped my little mind that there was a guy who played for the Brisbane Broncos (Queensland) yet he rolled out for NSW?

Mick De Vere was the name. And I will never, ever forget the surgical attempt of a job with staples on his forehead. League just seemed different. My interest was piqued.

But I digress.

So, here I am, a young lad with no knowledge of the game being taken to Suncorp by a guy who has no knowledge of the game either.

I remember settling into a seat as the Broncos ran out and my dad said “who do you want to go for?” so, being naïve, I said, “whoever wins”.

The Sharks managed to beat the Broncos that day. So that was my team. I didn’t understand that there were rules. I should have gone for the more successful Broncos that day.

But I didn’t know they were successful or even my home team, I just wanted to know who won. Sharks it was. They seemed pretty good. Little did I know, they were not pretty good at all.

My small interest in the Sharks grew as I went through school and soon I met what was to be my best friend at the time. He was a Dragons fan.

Naturally, we bantered about the teams combining all-time 13s. I was adamant that Luke Covell be the winger.

I was so excited whenever the derbies came around but little did I know, the Sharks hadn’t won a single trophy, Amco Cup excluded.

My mate gave me an endless amount of grief until I realised that the St George Illawarra Dragons hadn’t won anything (circa 2006) either. This was my ace.

I had dinner with his family and his dad, a notable sports presenter for Channel Nine and diehard Dragons fan, didn’t take too kindly to my logic.

The wife thought it was hilarious though. I was never invited back for dinner.

Despite realising that this was the most unsuccessful team of all time, I stuck with them. And when 2016 rolled around, I was over the moon.

We finally won. My fleeting years as a starved supporter were worth the wait.

I’ve re-watched that final about ten times and it never fails to give me heart palpitations.

There’s a video of me somewhere flipping over my coffee table during that last minute that felt like it lasted an hour. I did a shoey too – that will never be shared.

I may have missed the heydays of Andrew Ettingshausen, David Peachey and Brett Kimmorley, but I was enamoured by Luke Covell, Ben Pomeroy, Danny Nutley, Phil Bailey, Lance Thompson and the bash brothers Paul Gallen and Greg Bird.

And now, 20 years later, here I am. A pathetically diehard Sharks fan. Born out of Brisbane, loving the Reds and Wallabies, but a Sharks fan till I die.

Up, up.

Luke Covell or Dean Carney? Loved the article, BS. Hate the Sharks. Still gotta admire a guy from hated Queensland who goes for a NSW based team. Kudos to you. I did my hat to you and your shoulders.

My story. I was a 15 year old kid in Brisbane in the mid-70s. Had just started to get into league – watching and playing. One of the first games I saw was an AMCO Cup game involving Cronulla. Ray Warren kept talking up this “great centre” called Steve Rogers. That was it. 1975. I fancied myself as a centre too and played for Brothers in the Brisbane comp – he was the best. Been following Cronulla ever since through a bit of thick and a lot of thin. I feared, like many others, we’d never win a title. A pal paid for me to go to Sydney in 2016 to see the GF – there was of course the fear we’d lose. It was the greatest night of my life – relief and intense elation all rolled into one enormous feeling. I was on a high for months afterwards. Will never forget the game, the result, the feeling. I have never been to Cronulla and have been to two Cronulla games in my life – the GF and a match in Brisbane where the Broncos belted us. But I am as much a Cronulla man as anyone and always will be. And I am so thankful for guys like ET, Hatch, Miller, Gal, Flanno – the guys who held the team and club together through some dark times – pay cuts and people like Hatch and Miller selling raffle tickets – the Cronulla spirit. Guy who could have gone elsewhere but stayed to win a title and save the club. Most didn’t win a title sadly. But the 2016 team – and what a team it was – did it for them. I watched them run out – Gal, Ennis, Lewis, Graham – one tough, hardened pro after another another – they gave them confidence no matter who they were playing. And then – the sight of Gal and ET embracing, tears streaming down their faces – it’s the pic on my PC. Priceless. When I see the familiar Cronulla colours on TV I can sense a change in me – a feeling. Hard to describe. But I will love my beloved Cronulla to the day I die and hope if there’s a Heaven it is a great seat at Shark Park, Endeavour Field, PointsBet Stadium – no matter what it’s called – it’s home. Up up Cronulla.

So good the crowd created a ritual for every time he kicked. I remember him slotting a drop goal from about 40 metres out in one game. The man had a killer boot!

Very large group, especially those that remember his performance in 2008. What a points machine! Also, an absolute legend of a bloke.

I can't call myself a Carlton fan, as much as my Dad wished I was. Growing up it was the Lions and their 3-peat! Mum's a Collingwood fan so the household becomes a bit heated when the Blues and Pies face each other. Win or lose, Dad never wins. Being a Jets fan is just plain masochism! I feel for you. My parents ended up moving to New Orleans so I became a bit of a Saints fan. Not the same since the Brees left...

Good article, BS. Are you the only member of the Luke Covell appreciation society? Go the Dragons! :silly:

Right on BS! Thanks for sharing your journey into the black, white and blue. A Sharks/Reds man like myself! We’re a rare breed… and suckers for punishment! Sounds like you've rounded the last point out nicely by hitching your wagon to Carlton too. I'm not into the Southern game but I've gone down a similar path with my 3rd football code of choice... a long suffering NY Jets fan
