AFL NEWS: Pie for life- Magpies gun signs monster deal

By The Roar / Editor

Collingwood star Darcy Moore is off the free agency market, after recommitting to the Magpies on a whopping six-year contract.

Moore, one of the AFL’s best intercept defenders, was set to be hot property in the coming AFL trade and free agency period, but has opted to remain at the club he was drafted to as a father-son prodigy in 2014.

The announcement is the latest big win for Collingwood, continuing their successful start under new coach Craig McRae.

“I’m glad to come to an arrangement with the club and continue my football career at Collingwood,” Moore said in a statement to club media on Thursday morning.

“With a new coaching group and young squad, we are creating strong foundations for the future – this is exciting to be a part of.

“I understand my role as a leader of this program, and I’m pleased to continue this work for many years to come.”

Moore was named Magpies vice-captain heading into 2022, and is seen as a leading contender to replace veteran skipper Scott Pendlebury when he eventually hangs up his boots.

An All Australian in 2020, the 26-year old is now all but certain to finish his career in black and white.

Magpies general manager of football Graham Wright said the club is ‘pleased’ to lock in Moore’s services until 2028.

“All-Australian key defenders, 200cm plus of his calibre are hard to find,” he said.

“We respected the fact he was a free agent at the end of this year, and he would take some time to make his decision.

“We are pleased to come to terms that should see Darcy play out his career at Collingwood.”

I hope you wouldn't as I would like to see Collingwood win those games. I guess we are seeing it differently- what I saw was McCrae being inflexible when the momentum had clearly shifted.

Shocking up forward but Teague failed to realise the obvious that he should have been only played down back.

So I reckon the Pies are running out of room for De Goey particularly given how much he will be asking for

One could argue Virgil he out coached Chris Scott for three quarters and lost one?

6 years? Guess they did not learn much from the Grundy deal. With the potential talent coming through, you think they would have been a little more circumspect. The Pies are very much a work in progress and unlike others I prefer to wait til midseason before making a judgement on McCrae. He was clearly outcoached last weekend.

Macca he started the season really well and soon faded I believe.. True story. An unassuming average type in the past 40 years won a Copeland Trophy, stunning the football community who did not expect such a thing from what was a fair but an average season at best. So the rumour is the accounting firm responsible for the collation of round results awarded a 1-5 round result the opposite way to it was meant to be. That is they gave this guy best on ground every time he got 5th best. He still holds the award today...it was never corrected due to embarrassment and what would have been the stripping of his medal as best Collingwood player in a senior season. I sometimes wonder if Woewodin's Brownlow was something similar.

Statisticall there is very little difference between Woewodin's years at the Dee's and his year at the Pies. He was underwhelming at both save 1 amazing year. Hewett has been a quality player for a long time and has simply been allowed to me more attacking. Cerra is not going to be a Walsh but is an exceptional 5th or 6th mid.

I was a McGovern backer for a lot longer than most. I think the worst you would find is a comment saying he would win the reserves B&F this year.

Gee Macca if I could be bothered finding some of your comments on McGovern from last year I doubt they would look so flattering

I am not 100% certain Jones would have been as suited to Voss' style as he was to Teague's but I think the amount we miss him depends on if McGovern can stay fit. McGovern's ball use, speed and contested marking ability was sorely missed against the Hawks.

Calling it already Macca a couple of rounds in? I remember Shane Woewodin starting his career at the Pies in fine style...was more a fast burn though that flickered and died.

Manager Liam Pickering has said he rejected bigger money and longer term offers from rivals. Firstly, don’t managers always say that? Didn’t Cripps Manager say he took a massive pay cut for the privilege of playing for the Blues or was that the propaganda from Carlton? Secondly, if we give Pickering the benefit of the doubt, which clubs? Sydney? Bulldogs?…who else? Suns? Tigers? A few well known Tiger fans in The Roar said it was a done deal Moore to Richmond for 2023 and beyond too. You know who you are.

Yeah I'm not sure you need any of those unless you put Cameron down back. Still think Jones retirement has hurt...McGovern is still very early on in his reinvention...lets see if it can last. Cameron is 205 cm and has played defence before.

Not sure Windrince...if you were a 19 year old kid on good money would you live in Geelong or Melbourne? once you hit Jeremy Cameron's / Dangers age you're more ready for the quiet country life. I reckon your Tigers, Pies, Blues, Dons, Hawks have the advantage for younger players and then the Cats get the geographical advantages for your 25-30 year olds...
