NRL's top three wooden-spoon contenders after Round 5

By Christo / Roar Guru

The NRL season is in full swing and three teams that have been slow to start have the best chance of claiming the wooden spoon at season’s end.

3. Canterbury Bulldogs
Although the Bulldogs were one of the most-hyped teams over the off-season, they have failed to deliver, winning just one of their first five matches.

Many thought they would make their way out of the bottom three and possibly even play finals footy (for the record, I agreed with the first half of that sentence).

Despite the Doggies’ good patches, it’s a tight, two-point Round 1 win against the Cowboys that has them avoiding being winless.

Canterbury have continued to be partly stubborn in attack and their defence hasn’t improved much from 2021 as they have conceded the second-greatest number of points in 2022.

However, they have improved, so of each struggling team, it’s the Bankstown boys I have the highest hopes to dig themselves out.

2. St George Illawarra Dragons
I’m not full convinced the Dragons have realised the season has begun. I understand that we are just five weeks into the competition, however I find It really hard to figure out how they can turn this 1-4 start into a finals-calibre record.

Their defence has been absolutely atrocious, conceding the most points in total. The Dragons have rarely competed, and their only win was on the Sunshine Coast against the Warriors in Round 1. Since then, they have lost four straight games, including a 24-point defeat to the Sharks and a 48-14 beating at the hands of Paramatta.

Their most recent loss came against the Bunnies, a performance that had a total of 17 errors next to their name, which is unacceptable.

The Red V’s next match is against Newcastle on Sunday afternoon, which is a must-win match as the Knights are a team they can beat.

If you want to play September footy of late, you must win at least half your 24 games, so if the Dragons suffer another defeat, they would likely need to win 11 of their last 18 games.

1. Wests Tigers
The Tigers’ season has started as a nightmare and a half.

Currently sitting as the only winless side, the Balmain boys don’t look like breaking their finals drought any time soon.

Their most recent outing summed up their season, being torn apart by the Sharks and lucky to not have more than 30 points conceded.

There is no excuse for this start and you can’t argue that they haven’t been winning because of the teams they’ve taken on – the only side they have played from last year’s top four is the Melbourne Storm, which surprisingly is the match that they performed best in.

On the positive side, Jackson Hastings seems to be a good buy, as a great controller of the side. However it’s impossible for even the greatest player to control a side when most perform to the ability of under-14s.

The other two players that I have been impressed with are Luciano Leilua and Kelma Tuilagi, who both have great running and off-loading ability, and Tuilagi can snap a bloke in half.

Tyrone Peachey needs to be bought into the starting halves and Luke Brooks should spend some time on the bench, as he is dreadful in attack and one of the most over-payed and overrated players in the league.

The Tigers are always changing their roster and gameplan to comfort Brooks. Right now, he is nowhere near good enough to be having the side evolve around him and Peachey will bring the spark needed in the starting side.

Sports opinion delivered daily

The ‘blame the coach’ trend has continued, but the roster is poor. However, the goal is to show 100 per cent effort and execute your game plan, which the Tigers simply can’t do.

I don’t see a season turnaround, which is why I have them as the most likely team to win the 2022 wooden spoon.

As the Broncos realised after their spoon award, just changing the coach isn't enough, you have to start in the boardroom. With the current management, even Bellamy couldn't improve the Tigers enough to make the finals. The best thing the Tigers could do is blow the joint up and start again. That is much more likely to achieve success.

I'm making myself a promise, if the tigers get the spoon I'm finally dumping them. Nothing will stop me, my life long dedication and support will be finally over. I think.

Doubt it .. read an article where Sloan and Amone feel like they have been unfairly treated. Talk now of Amone linking with Dolphins. Something is terribly wrong with this St George side. Can't see them winning any time soon .. not with Griffin's stubborn attitude.

Bellamy is better off staying a one-club warrior I reckon. The main benefit of a club signing Bellamy would be his ability to attract talent, in my opinion, sort of the opposite of Madge.

I see a joining of the dots moment here. Admittedly, Panthers were a flop when Cleary was out of the team last year during Origin, and later in the season v Storm. Halves pairings v Tigers and Sharks - Burton 6/ May 7, halves v Storm - Burton 6/ Luai 7. It's Burton. He's not a half.

This is the quandary they seem to spend their development money signing players out of leagues that other clubs service and it's not cheap to interact, train and develop juniors. Then some how come out of it with a development tag. But clubs need to be able retain the players they have developed to first grade roosters included. There seems to be a lot of jostling going on at the moment about the control and funding of rugby league in Australia and the roosters are definitely one of the players in this. So what could end up happening is that decisions will be made for the short term benefit and long term profit of the NRL at the expense of state leagues, junior and regional competitions.

We're currently at the beginning of a breeding cycle. Be patient. Soon they will be back in double the numbers. :silly:

You know what i would love to see? I know this has a very low chance on happening, but Bellamy to the Tigers would build such a great story line. It would prove so much about how good of a coach he actually is. Although, obviously he's one of the greats already, but if he went to Balmain and turned that team around, it would add so much to his legacy.

Hello Watda, i haven't really thought that i mention Souths in many articles. If your a roosters fan then this verdict is obviously fair... But if this is a genuine opinion then i really don't understand why you would think Souths will be anywhere near the wooden spoon. I know they have seemed to be playing below standards to be gin the season and their start fullback will be out for 8 weeks. However they are still gelling after Reynolds departure and a new coach. They have actually looked good in parts of this season so far. They are so dangerous when their at their best and i believe their best wont be far away. They a still certainly a top 8 side in my books and too even mention them in the wooden spoon conversation is mind-blowing.

Have you seen Brooks play this season? Usually he would be sent back to local rugby league if it wasn't for the money he's on.

3RM, i highly agree on the Roosters getting treated a-lot better than other clubs in the league. The new proposal rewards a club $100,000 of salary cap relief, in exchange for blooding their own debutants. Of course, the sombrero's have come out on top of the pile, therefore they will be granted the $100,000 each year.

Don't be surprised if both are cut off even before the end of the season. A couple more horrible performances will have both coaches a knifes edge.

Sorry i finished writing this article shortly before team lists came out. I like the idea of Hastings into the halves, however i would love to see the Tigers pair Hastings and Peachy as halves partners for a match or so. On the flip side, it would be a really hard decision for Madge too remove Brooks from the starting side as the backlash from just transitioning him out of halfback was high. The point is that he is a million-dollar contract player (absolutely shouldn't be close too the 1 mil mark) If Wests were to have him playing on the bench/reserves and they were too keep getting pumped, then many critics would base their reasoning for the poor performances over that decision and have an argument of, 'you cant have a player thats paid that much on the bench'.

I’d be more worried about no Bunnies’ fans turning up to the game. Their crowd numbers are woefully down.
