Melbourne City notch first Champions League win thanks to Tilio double

By News / Wire

Melbourne City FC have scored their first Asian Champions League win, with a 3-0 victory over United City after Marco Tilio launched two balls into the back of the net in the second half.

Melbourne City charged into their second group G match in the AFC on Monday but their nine attempts to score in the first half were thwarted until Stefan Colakovski’s 34th-minute strike.

City secured their second goal just before the hour mark after a line-splitting ball from Scott Jamieson at left back opened up the pitch for Endoh, who cut the ball back for Tilio to finish.

The winger scored the second when he found himself inside the box and slammed a left-footed strike into the back of the net.

“It’s good to score a couple goals but it’s about the team performance,” Tilio said later.

“I think tonight we went out and did reasonably well to get the result. There’s always plenty of improvement there but we just look towards the next match now.”

It was their second AFC group G match after a 1-1 draw against Thailand’s BG Pathum United late last week.

City are hoping to end Australia’s recent difficult run of results in Asia.

Tony Popovic’s Western Sydney Wanderers claimed the 2014 title, while Adelaide United reached the final in 2008.

But since the Wanderers’ triumph, no Australian team has gone further than the competition’s round of 16.

It is really hard to tell whether CFG's influence or the FA's Sydney bias would prevail.

you would want some sort of reassurance that you’d be starting most games, the problem with that is he hasn’t proven he can start week after week (granted that city attacking third is probably the hardest to break into in the league) – and we all know that coaches will tell you things to sign, but once you have signed – the things you’ve been told are generally broken promises physically his body hasn’t broken down compared to other australian players who play in his preferred roles and are around his age group i believe he’s still got CAA as his agents and they have plenty of big name clients (varane, maddison, min-son) that play in all the best leagues. plus, tilio plays for a city group club, which we all know opens up doors at all levels because of the reputation (eg ange at celtic) which country suits his style the best? he should avoid england, physically not strong enough for the leagues i’d also avoid italy which is very rigid with tactics, im not sure hes got the discipline yet at his age (maybe in time) to follow strict orders id lean him towards portugal, if i was his agent

miller is signed, sealed delivered macarthur – sydney came in way too late for him i knew i forgot someone, james donachie (and thats because hes had a forgettable season lol) donachie is also off contract at season end. sydney will be the most interesting club to follow in the off season for a neutral, a lot of movement is expected clubs are already starting to announce signings/renewals for next season, yet sydney have been very quiet. I wonder if thats because corica could be on the way out

Depending on how City do in the ACL, I can see them being the first contender from the A League for an Asian Super League.

I agree we need a centreback – maybe Miller? – Wilko is too slow now to cover the mistakes of other, Donahue has flaws & Warland hasnt really shown the brains (he still makes beginner mistakes ) …however some of that could be he knows Corica shows no faith in him.

Yeah moving to a western or mid Europe league would be the way to go. But would it be any better trying to crack a tougher starting 11 overseas?

its not too far out of the realms of possibility to suggest sydney might start the off season with only 1 senior centreback in warland, who has looked average this season but has 1 year left on his contract wilko and mcging(id expect sydney to renw) contracts expiring at season end and van der saag in negotiatians with adelaide all 4 players you mentioned pose different, difficult and interesting questions for sydneys management calusenic might be the finest ball playing centrehalf nationally in his age group, but he currently lacks the physicallity required to be a top top centreback im not sure gurds heart is fully in the sport, he might need to be pick between modelling and football duricic has been around the club for a while now and barely had a sniff in, time is right to move on mlnaric i have spoken about many times on here - absolutely should leave the club, the brisbane loan hasn't worked as all would've hoped, but there is still a really sound centreback there who is rated top 5 in developement stats in australia

either way he was in a bit of a pickle sydney werent going to give him regular minutes and he made the decision to leave. Which in hindsight was still the correct thing to do, a lot of sydneys youth need to leave to get regular minutes (theres 3-4 young centrebacks that absolutely should move on to progress their careers - sydney are just stockpiling them for, god knows what lol the move to city was the wrong one though, he was never going to be a regular starter for that club. It will take a really good offer for them to sell him though, hes on decent coin and contracted for a couple more years. he seems reasonably happy at being on the periphery of being a starting player as well at the end of the season i'd be assessing my options though, he'll be 21 and a good age to move overseas

He makes a great winger but isnt better than Nabbout or Leckie at the moment hence why he occasionally starts in centre mid now.

City’s attacking style (most goal difference by a long way) suits Tilio. He would be wasted at the current Sydney or any older defensive A League team. The only way forward is to go Europe or Asia like japan.

Sydney had Tilio in their plans and wanted to keep him but he felt he'd get more games at City. Looking back he was wrong..Id welcome him back!

Tilio playing Socceroos and ACL while at City would mean going overseas would be the only way to keep developing.

It was great to see a lot of the younger players starting and attacking well together.

Is this the first match report that fails to mention the name of one of the teams. They played against United City from the Phillipines. I dont know how City got the easiest ever group stage in Asian Champions league history, but they failed to beat the Thai team it was 1-1, and the Thai team beat the Korean team which is a K2 team and qualified by winning the cup. So City now have to win against the K2 team Jeonam Dragons to be certain to go through. They have 5 groups now as well, so because one team withdrew the, the results against the fourth team are not counted, so all they have is a draw, and two draws likely wont cut it for top 3 of the 5 second placed teams. I watched the first match and they were unlucky they had the better of the second half, and the chance particularly for McLaren at the end, the Thai keeper came rushing out all McLaren had to do was tap it to the side and put it away but he tapped it too close to the keeper. Sydney FC so far have pulled off the most credible result, a 0-0 draw with K-league champions Jeonbuk, but they have Yokohama Marinos in their group as well.

Makes me sad seeing a player like Tilio (who comes from Western Sydney) playing for other clubs. He must surely be on a few radars by now the way he's travelling.
