Empty words and over the top celebrations: Here's how low North Melbourne have fallen

By Christian Montegan / Roar Pro

You don’t need to be a sports journalist, writer, or footy expert to state the obvious – the North Melbourne Football Club has been and continues to be an absolute shambles of an organisation.

There have been so many problems to pick from that have accumulated to the Kangaroos finding themselves in this position, from recruitment of players and coaches, decisions from senior board members, and a failure to clearly stick to a clear long-term plan to at least stabilise the club of some sorts.

All of those issues can be discussed in detail on another day, but let’s just focus on the events that occurred on Saturday afternoon at Marvel Stadium against the Tigers.

There is no denying that the club is in dire need of some good news after the struggles it has endured for many years, however, the new appointment of coach Leigh Adams and the first win in 14 games is no excuse for the excessive celebrations after the game.

Is there a counter argument that we should let the players enjoy a rare victory and make the most of it? Correct, it was great for them to sing the club song in the change rooms after so many tumultuous weeks. At the end of the day though, four points is four points and the win should not be treated as some sort of grand final.

North players were emotional after the siren, with Jy Simpkin saying “this is for you Nobes” in the post-game interview, referring to sacked coach David Noble.

As much as it was a famous win, it is worth asking the question of where was that emotion, hunger, and determination when Noble was actually there?

There was no fallout with the previous manager as Nick Larkey pointed out that Noble “gave everything to the club” and is “a great man,” so the relationship between players and coach was there.

It is well known that teams show a reaction to any new coach coming in, but to not see that same effort in previous games is disappointing.

This club is all talk but takes little action to achieve its target goals. Back in 2020, chairman Ben Buckley stated that he wanted to achieve a premiership in the next three years. Ridiculous statements such as that only add unnecessary pressure on an already struggling brand.

To say North supporters have had it tough is a massive understatement as they have endured constant pain. Despite yesterday’s result, personally, I would be ashamed to be a fan of such a poorly run football club.

The next question that should be posed is whether those supporters should be doing a little bit more to help the club move in the right direction.

Such steps can be taken such as boycotting matches and gathering peaceful protests against the club’s board of directors. Fans need to understand that they have more of a voice than they realise, and that there comes a point where enough is simply enough.

People are spending money on tickets and memberships only for that money to be pumped back into the club and watch 40+ point losses every week.

Again, is there a counter argument that fans should stick by their team during the bad times not just the good? Yes, that’s fair enough. In saying that though, where are the signs that the good times will occur anytime soon? Are they happy to be a mediocre club for the foreseeable future?

It’s funny how different cultural fan bases work around the world. To compare AFL and European football, for example, football supporters will go to those lengths mentioned above to try and make some sort of change happen as it’s their way of showing passion.

Maybe because the AFL and the A-League do not have a relegation system and no consequences for poor performances and campaigns, the stakes are not as high, and that motivation to improve quicker is not quite there, as for AFL the reward for winning the wooden spoon is winning the number 1 draft pick.

What message does the board send when they are seen on the ground after the game enjoying the highs but not fronting up the media when things get tough and supporters want answers?

This club needs to take confidence from the win, but look to put their head down and work twice as hard to show signs of some consistency until the of the season.

Of course, the Kangas deserved to celebrate a great win against arguably the best team in the past 5 years. It was just a bit too over the top for a club that still has such a long way to go until they can even be talking about making the top eight, let alone win a premiership.

That’s what all clubs aspire to, don’t they?

I never did. I'm stating an opinion that has not been popular but I am still expressing my view. Journalists like Damien Barrett don't get to where they are today without having unpopular opinions. It happens to every writer. 'Telling it how it is and being brave for having a completely different opinion to others should be commended more and not put down.

The really sad thing about the 14 game losing streak is that it barely makes the top 10 losing streaks in North Melbourne's VFL/AFL history. There are two over thirty and another five between 15 and 20. Still, we aren't St. Kilda. :stoked:

I agree Noble was a mistake, but I guess that can happen when you take a chance on an untried coach, hopefully with a new board and a new President they won't be making the same mistake. To say he unfairly lost his job is ludicrous, after a positive showing in the second half of last season, the warning signs should have been flashing after a terrible pre season, but the fact they took until after round 17 to act is probably the bigger mistake. His tenure wasn't working, it was causing all kinds of tension at the club, and probably not great for Noble and his family either, it should have looked at and acted on towards the end of Buckley's reign and not left to the new President.

Ah yes, let's somehow twist a win from an embattled club that snaps the worst losing streak in history into an opportunity to pot the club further. What do you want them to do, not celebrate? Of course they're going to celebrate after fourteen straight losses.

After North received their first ever number 1 pick last year, I think Port Adelaide are the only club who have yet to receive one. Not a bad effort for a small club that has had to fight hard almost 100 years to remain competitive in this league.

you said some journalists are not afraid to tell it like it is, who says you know what it actually is?

Compared to every other club in the last 50 years, North are the final one to hit rock bottom. Every single one of them has been in this position and endured comparable drama. That North fought on so long before bottoming out is to their credit and to their supporters.

That’s all well and good, but they then take 2 steps backwards when they hire David Noble to get some stability going knowing full well that it would be a massive rebuilding process…yet unfairly loses his job due to poor management up the top. There’s no relegation in AFL, people like you are happy to see a one-off win so what would be the issue with keeping him? And no, that was not my article. Thank you for a much better reply though

But that’s the thing, you are not saying how it is, you are telling half truths and flat out lies, probably based on poor information from gutter journalist like Barrett, Browne and Wilson who know very little about what’s actually going on at Arden Street. There is no doubt that North Melbourne have made some mistakes in the recent past, and when you are small club that fights for every dollar mistakes can be far more costly than if you are a bigger club, as we have seen over the last 3 years, but they are debt free for the first time 50 years, they have new facilities currently under construction and further developments in the pipeline. Despite what has been happening on field, off field they are building strong foundations to remain at Arden Street for another 150 years. By the way, are you the person who wrote that abhorrent article about North Melbourne last year that the editors eventually removed from the site? They should probably look at removing this article as well, as I think this is every bit as biased and vindictive as that article.

Manager? In Australian Rules Football they're called a coach. Maybe stick to what you know best which is obviously not the Australian game

Not trying to tear them down or be a troll…just trying to say it how it is. It’s okay if you’re not able to accept a different opinion. This country’s culture needs to change for clubs who are rotten for too long. They get the number 1 draft pick and get rewarded like I mentioned and that still hasn’t gotten them anywhere…yet we clap them when they win a game and treat them as if nothing is wrong. If supporters and the club want to accept mediocrity I’m all for it.

Never said they aspired to be battlers .Once filled in a game for a team that were always short of players first win in ages they were rapt thanked me for coming down with big smiles on there faces even though I didn't do much .Winning a game makes everyone feel better no need to put a negative spin on it .

I agree that every team should celebrate a win of course it is only natural! But my point was the way they celebrated the win just highlights how bad of a situation they find themselves in

Who cares how the North Melbourne players celebrated their victory, after a tough few months and an even tougher week they have every right to be a little over the top in their celebrations. And who cares that they showed their support for David Noble (I have no idea who Mark Noble is) after the game, he has been a part of their lives for the last 18-24 months. You'd have be a pretty sour and vindictive human being to feel anything negative about what occurred of Saturday, so congratulations Christian, you, Damian Barrett and Tom Browne have shown us all what is wrong with modern sports journalism. I hope the pearly gates are shut when it's your turn to walk through them.
