Despite heavy defeat, fans need to back the Wallaroos

By Hugh_96 / Roar Pro

It was a tough watch but as Australian rugby fans we have an innate responsibility to stick by the Wallaroos. Every time they run out they put in the effort. So, we should do the same to watch them.

You have to give the Wallaroos credit, they front up every time against the Kiwis. They have already played the Kiwis once, now have two Tests and then face them again on the opening day of the World Cup.

It is a bit like Australian men’s rugby where the Super Rugby teams must face off against the Kiwi teams and then play the All Blacks three times a year.

At least the men get paid well for it, while the women for $200 a day are doing it for love of the sport. This is not a shot at Rugby AU – it appears they just do not have the funds.

In summary, as expected, the Black Ferns are just faster, stronger, fitter and more skilled. It is a bit like watching the former professional rugby sevens women playing in the NRLW – they are just better, a result of the full-time training and prep.

Pre-game, coach Jay Tregonning said: “We’re still building towards the World Cup, but we want to keep improving with every game and be competitive against the top teams in the world, which includes New Zealand.

“These two Test matches provide us with a great opportunity for further growth off the back of the Pacific Four campaign, with valuable game time for the players ahead of the World Cup.”

There was no indication that a win was possibly on the cards.

The Wallaroos were in the game for the first 10 to 15 minutes, having a fair amount of possession and territory. However, they were unable to get any points. Eventually the Black Ferns got some ball, and it was pretty much one-way traffic.

There were some odd decisions early on like not taking the three points and the kicking was not great. They did show a bit by swinging the ball out wide that gave Ivania Wong and Mahlia Murphy a couple of good runs.

In the end a lot of the decision making by the Wallaroos had to be made under extreme pressure from the Black Ferns’ unrelenting defence.

In rugby the set piece is king (or queen). The Wallaroos tried, were okay but not at the Black Ferns’ level. It seemed the halfback was always on the back foot, as a consequence the backline never got any consistent front-foot ball.

There was discussion pre-game that the Wallaroos had picked up their fitness. That may have been the case but it seemed the Kiwis did everything faster and for longer.

There were not too many highlights but in the last couple of minutes Piper Duck scored a try from a great pass from prop Emily Robinson. It would not surprise to see Robinson start next week, she has more skills than most props plus can kick goals if needed.

Must make comment on Ivania Wong, she had a great game up against Ruby Tui. She more than held her own and showed no hesitation or fear throwing her body on the ball.

The back row even without Grace Hamilton played really well. At one stage captain Shannon Parry was replaced by Piper Duck, although not sure if that was a substitution or a replacement due to an injury.

There are unlikely to be too many changes to the team this week, there just is not the cattle available to make a huge difference. Maybe they will give some players a run.

Sports opinion delivered daily

No doubt there will be some discussion about Grace Hamilton. Would reinstating her make a big difference? Probably not. Would they be better with her? Probably. Did Grace Kemp have a poor game? Not at all, she played the full 80 and her size is needed. The back row is not the issue.

The bottom line is the Black Ferns are formidable. It is worth noting they have a squad of 50 that will have to be reduced to around 31 for the World Cup. They have a lot of quality players fighting for a position in the squad. They could put out a very different team next week.

On the flip side this current Wallaroos squad is pretty close to what will be selected for the World Cup, there just is not the depth like in New Zealand.

The Wallaroos will need to pull out all the cliches – ‘gird their loins’, ‘brush it off’, ‘get back on the horse’ et cetera as they head to Adelaide Oval. On the plus side they still look like they are still enjoying themselves.

Probably agree with you in terms of entertainment NRLW & is simple to follow. In many ways League & Rugby are very different games, with different player requirements. I'm a fan of NFL & League is a form of NFL, each team takes it in turn to run to plays. Also I think I really enjoy the NRLW because of watching the former rugby players. The lack of entertainment in the Wallaroos/ Kiwi game was a reflection that the Wallaroos were never in the game. Wait til you see England & France roll in for the World Cup

Well obviously, Doc, they need more than just the one, as in sponsors, like they have in Aotearoa, for the game there. I realise Cadbury are a sponsor here but, evidently they a sponsor, or sponsors, that pays the bills, as to say.

The issue isn't so much where does it come from, the issue is its allocation. There are funds from the broadcasting deal, sponsors, Rugby Foundation etc, the decision then has to be made how is it distributed.

They have a sponsor Muzzo. I don't know the details of the package but apparently they have one.

Have you ever heard of sponsorship Doc? Something that many in RA have failed to do, for many a decade.

Jane, I'm not saying its right, it is how it is. I don't agree I think Rugby AU are making a mistake, which will cost them a lot more financially in the future, assuming they actually want women's 15s rugby. Personally I think they a relying too much on getting the Wallabies to be successful and be the flag bearers for rugby's popularity & success financially.

Not sure they are the dregs, but I understand the use of emotive language to stir things up. It will be interesting how many switch after the World Cup, I'm guessing a few.

I watched both this match and the NRLW and unfortuantely the League had a lot more entertainment value, although NZ did put together some classy tries.

Wouldn't say all the best rugby players play in the NRLW. There are a few in the 7s program who are extremely good, for example Charlotte Caslick. Have to say rugby really knows how to train the players, most move across are successful - there is around 20 I think. Also I assume you mean best rugby players in Australia because there are some exceptional players in NZ & also the English & French rugby teams are outstanding. They pay more than NRLW & are F/T professional.

When he said they left 5-6 tries out there I agreed I thought they had and also felt tad downcast for the Wallaroos. But just have to keep in the fight & keep swinging.

Watching the game it reminded me of watching the Aussie 7s women up against some of the teams on the World Series. The 7s women F/T professional, a program that has been running since around 2015 up against part timers, who try their best, can hang in there for awhile but in the end are run over. And yes, some $$ and the talent available from NRL/AFL would make a huge difference. Unfortunately $$ is not going to happen in the short term, just have to give them some grassroots support and accept more will go overseas or try NRLW. It does mean I probably will watch a bit NRLW

Yes Beefa, pretty sad it's only club against club, but it looks more so that RA, still hasn't the capability to find top sponsors.

Well Iain, it's really the draw of international competition, that one want's in Aotearoa, not so much, club against club. Yes money does come into it, as in Aotearoa they have the sponsorship in place, like Adidas, Silver Lake, AIG etc etc , to finance, rugby. But in truth, with the current Black Ferns, they have a world class coach in Wayne Smith.

I feel for the Wallaroos - in essence it was lightly compensated part-timers (I don't mean that critically of the players) up against paid professionals. In NZ they don't have to compete against the financial 'allure' of women's League & AFL either - so the pool of potential players is that much better for them. If we could draw on the elite women currently plying their trade for these codes for our code I am pretty confident the contest with the Silver Ferns would be just that - a serious 80min contest.

Oh yes more pay in NRLW fo-sho, but the NRL only want the best, so will pay for the best. The Wallaroos are the dregs that the NRLW don`t want. RA have no money and cannot keep the best girls from rugby switching codes.

I'm sorry Hugh that is patronizing, if they can't afford to pay the girls a living wage Rugby Australia should meet be publicly stating that they are pursuing NRL players on seven figure Sums. I can't tell you the amount of women in central Queensland now looking at a move to League cause they actually see a future there. I will always watch Australia but there is no defence for not playing the players, even the 40k the sevens players get isn't enough.

Possibly due to better pay, which shows RA, need to wake up to themselves. Like rugby is a global game, league is not, or nowhere near the same.
