When has a board ever voted to give themselves less power?

'Definition of madness': Rugby reform must start with total cleanout of RA board - and this should happen next

As much as I wish you all the best the change you seek is unlikely to occur.

The system favours self interest and it is in the interest of the voting parties to keep things the way they are.

It’s as if Rugby League doesn’t exist and a is game designed to reduce defenders and create overlaps… and yet we still see defences opting to tackle players, not disrupting the last pass to an unmarked wing.

Probably because they figured out you’re just handing your opposition a set piece in your territory.

Here at Rugby Union land we’re slow on the uptake though. We think more penalties are improving the game.

The Wrap: Why SANZAAR must hold Frank Lomani accountable for 'going back for his hat'

I’d rather scrums in a RWC final than it decided by yellow cards.

But I don’t work for World Rugby.

What’s stopping them doing that now, assuming they knock it backwards?

I think the penalty is a dumb rule. It places all the ball security on the defending team (having to gather/catch the ball cleanly) and none on the attacking team. No punishment for throwing a stupid pass.

I must admit I am not up to date with NRL, but do they not stop for a scrum when there is a knock on?

Touch football any time the ball hits the deck it’s lost possession.

Not only is it not a penalty it’s a viable defence in all other Rugby codes.

The problem is whether you get a penalty and yellow card or a huge applause and a pat of the back comes down to the slimmest of margins.

Luck shouldn’t play a factor in whether you get penalized for an action like this.

Remove the penalty. Play the knock forward if it goes forward.

Yes teams will use it as a viable defence… Harder to execute than a boring mark.

Highlanders should have been penalised more than Jordan Way pinged them. Their breakdown work was sloppy, unstructured and more often than not, on the wrong side of the laws.

Several times they would hold opposition players in the ruck, even after the ball was gone. They would liberally come in from the side, fail to release, lie on ball on the wrong side in defensive rucks and take players out of play to the side of rucks.

It was a mess and they deserved to be punished for it.

I’ve seen better structure in schoolboy games.

I don’t hate the Brumbies… why would you say such a thing? I mean… they’re not The Reds… but they’re also definitely not the Waratahs.

Brumbies 'systematically taken apart by the Blues' in 'non-contest' as Larkham's men cop huge reality check

Watched the replay. The telling thing is we came away with points almost every incursion into their 22. Makes a big difference to previous weeks.

Highlanders were penalised off the park but I think still not penalised enough. Their ruck work was absolutely terrible and Way could have thrown a few yellows at them.

'Like a Scud missile': World Cup reject leads rout, but Reds suffer fresh blow with Petaia's season in jeopardy

I’ve been travelling the whole week and won’t get back until this evening to watch replays of the games.

This sounds like one I should skip.

It’s a contextual ‘they’. Stan have all the leverage here, no question. They know exactly what Super Rugby is worth and what markets it is performing in.

I’m not sure you can call someone a business ‘brain’ and dumb in the same sentence. That’s an oxymoron.

Like everything Rugby Australia the type of person they need would be smart enough to not want to have anything to do with them.

Passion off the field is only as good as passion on the field. It can only make up for so much deficiency in technical skills. A technical master will beat a passionate novice 9 days out of 10.

The Wrap: 'Take them to a dark place' - A quiet round grabs eyeballs for all the wrong reasons

If only they had a product they could play a hard bargain with and court other bidders.

The Wrap: 'Take them to a dark place' - A quiet round grabs eyeballs for all the wrong reasons

The difference being first time around Stan had very little to no data to go by, certainly nothing that was primary data based on their own system’s viewing information. All they really had was what Fox/Kayo gave them, and even then Fox didn’t have a complete data model since a large chunk of their customers were still on Foxtel cable only (which unless connected to the IQ system, did not provide info on who was watching what when back upstream).

So Stan went into the deal without a complete picture of what it is worth.

Now they have a few years of solid data they can use to measure the true value of the Super Rugby offering.

That data would make for some interesting reading / analysis.

Given that this horrible occurrence happened AFTER the players were shown the red cheese it should have no bearing in the outcome of their judicial hearings.

But we know it will.

Drua 'shocked at racial abuse' as Lomani faces judiciary over Canham blow

Regarding broadcast negotiations, SANZAR (or whatever they call themselves these days) are novices taking plastic swords to a fight with seasoned media professionals armed with viewing data across the whole competition.
They are outgunned, outclassed, and outwitted. There is little hope of coming away with a ‘good deal’ that will financially secure the competition or the product. Instead they will come away with a poor deal which sees the group having to seek external funding to help fund Stan and Sky’s content production.
What they need is a visionary that can put together a 5 year strategic plan for growth and funding of the Super Rugby hierarchy to ensure that there is enough funds to keep the clubs in the game, and generate the exposure and audience that will have sponsors knocking on their doors, not the other way around.
It is a shame that to date we have seen little evidence anyone involved in Super Rugby either side of the Tasman has the brains or the ability to pull this together.
The best they have is “Rugby is a world game!”. Dopes.

YouTube has started to move into YouTube originals and funding production of content. Accessible only to subscribers.

Super Rugby AU really should be talking to them. Especially if they have an eye on the US market.

The Wrap: 'Take them to a dark place' - A quiet round grabs eyeballs for all the wrong reasons

Absolutely… but the ‘earn’ calculation is a tricky one. The model appears to be quantity over quality, and the ‘earn’ is calculated a proportion of monthly subscription. Probably a whole new field of economics 🙂

Netflix has proven the model isn’t about ‘wowing’ viewers, it’s about giving them just enough to keep them from unsubscribing.

The slide of Disney+ content quality as it tries to make its bottom line work is further proof.

When it comes to broadcasting I always wonder why they don’t approach YouTube and see if they’re interested.

YouTube is the sleeping giant in sports broadcasting.

The Wrap: 'Take them to a dark place' - A quiet round grabs eyeballs for all the wrong reasons

Broadcasters have shown already all they want is more content. Quality seems of very little concern.

Probably the worst week of Super Rugby 2024 so far. Congrats to the Brumbies but WTF Waratahs and Force?!

Meanwhile all the news around the ‘hood is back to the future aka we’re going to keep doing the same things that got us here and it has been a sharp descent from the first few rounds.

Brumbies make it 12 straight against Tahs as Bell hobbles off in worrying sign for Wallabies

And this is the player safety concern. The scrum is won. The ball should be played.
The scrum should be about winning possession, not winning penalties.

'Insane and total stupidity': Drua have two SENT OFF as Rebels score 33 unanswered points to win again

The thing that annoys me especially under current interpretations is you must use the ball immediately from the base of a ruck but you can hold it there forever in a scrum until the referee decides to give you a penalty.

Surely for player safety and entertainment if the ball is available at a scrum it must be used.
