'Our plan from the outset': Springboks roll out second-string side for Wallabies with 13 stars to miss Test

By Christy Doran / Editor

Less than a week ago Eddie Jones called on the Springboks to name their best side to take on his Wallabies side.

Springboks coach Jacques Nienaber hasn’t, but will it matter?

As anticipated, Nienaber has divided his squad into two with 13 players to head to New Zealand early to prepare for their clash against the All Blacks early to help manage the quick turnaround and logistical challenges.

It’s a bold move but one that we’ve come to expect from the Springboks in recent years under Nienaber and director of rugby Rassie Erasmus.

It means World Cup winners Steven Kitshoff, Malcolm Marx, Eben Etzebeth, Faf de Klerk, Damian de Allende and Cheslin Kolbe will miss the Test. Jasper Wiese will also miss the Test for the birth of his child.

“Our plan from the outset was to select a squad that we believe has what it takes to beat Australia while at the same time selecting a group of players that could travel to New Zealand to give us the best possible chance to do well in both matches,” Nienaber said.

“Our last Rugby Championship match is in Johannesburg and then we’ll be able to select a squad from our full complement of players.

“This squad features several Rugby World Cup winners and a crop of younger players who have done the job for us at the highest level, and judging by their enthusiasm and high work ethic at training, we know they are the right players for this big task.”

Nienaber has nonetheless named a Springboks side with plenty of world-class players including interim captain Duane Vermeulen, Frans Malherbe, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Lukhanyo Am and Willie le Roux.

“We had a few options as potential captains and we have two good leaders in Duane and Lukhanyo, who has been named vice-captain for this match,” Nienaber said.

“They are both quality leaders and they’ll have a lot of experience around them on the field, which is fantastic for us as coaches.”

After leading the Stormers to the United Rugby Championship final, Manie Libbok, the 25-year-old who has long threatened to make a name for himself on the world stage, has the chance to push his World Cup claims.

The fly-half will wear the No.10 jersey for the first time, having come off the bench on three occasions.

He will partner Cobus Reinach in the halves, with Harlequins midfielder Andre Esterhuizen given a rare chance to start at inside centre with Damian de Allende another who will already be on route to the Shaky Isles by the time the first whistle goes at Loftus Versfeld.

While the second-row is new with former Irish lock Jean Kleyn to start alongside Marvin Orie, it’s an experienced front-row with Malherbe to pack down alongside Bongi Mbonambi and Ox Nche.

Nienaber also has some physicality, class and experience to bring off the bench with prop Vincent Koch, lock RG Snyman and talented back Damian Willemse selected.

The Wallabies flew to Johannesburg last Friday and Jones said he was hoping the Springboks rolled out their best side.

“I don’t know, but what I’m hoping for is their best team,” Jones told reporters at Sydney International Airport on Friday morning after being asked what side he expected their opponents to roll out.

Asked why, Jones said he didn’t want to take down a half-baked Springboks side.

“Because I want to play against the best,” he said.

“If we want to beat South Africa in Pretoria, we want to play against the best.”

Nienaber insisted they weren’t underestimating the Wallabies, with the Springboks unbeaten in seven matches against their Australian rivals at the venue.

“They are a top-class team and have a great tactician in head coach Eddie Jones,” he said.

“This will be the first time we see them play under his leadership in a while, so our focus is mainly on our game and what we would like to do in the match.

“This game is very important to set the tone for us this season, and we know that regardless of what style of play Australia dishes up it’s going to a physical and hard match.”

DDA has been an essential part of the Springboks way back to the top. Most of us value him for his contributions in deciding moments, he has a seriously good temperament to go with his size which has not been as prominent with AE but you are correct that his defence sets him apart.

Personally, I've never consider DDA as good as many Bok fans and I see AE ripping up trees every week in the GP. More time in the saddle and I would expect him to cement the spot. He's certainly more skillful - better passing and kicking game - but I know the Boks like a strong carrier and tackler at 12 so perhaps DDA just suits the game plan better.

AE have had a few opportunities and only played well against Italy. I get that he's highly rated but if this was the WC final DDA will start 100% every time.

Take your first and third points but we’re going to have to disagree on DDA

Hendrikse who's injured was ahead of Faf so he'd be 1st currently, De Allende has always been better than Esterhuizen and Kolbe who was MOTM in the European final recently has always been 1st choice but was injured.

@Phil This Bok team is not missing many of it's star players. It's equal in quality to the squad going to NZ imo Marx only ever comes on from the bench in 2nd half. The players in for de Klerk, Kitshoff, de Allende and Kolbe are just as good and all have Test experience. Estebeth is the only alleged "star" out and I'm glad to see one of the worlds dirtiest cheap shot players not playing. Australia have several stars out

Depending in how many of this weeks springbok side are drafted in to play the all blacks, this is probably the stronger of the two sides.

Lots of talk about disrespect etc but it seems people's memories don't recall 2019 when the same thing happened. Some players will definitely form part of both games. Here's the lineup against Australia in game 1 of 2019. Tendai Mtawarira Bongi Mbonambi Trevor Nyakane Eben Etzebeth Lood de Jager Rynhardt Elstadt Pieter-Steph du Toit Francois Louw Hershel Jantjies Elton Jantjies Makazole Mapimpi Andre Esterhuizen Jesse Kriel S'bu Nkosi Warrick Gelant Lizo Gqoboka Francois Steyn Vincent Koch Schalk Brits Marcel Coetzee Cobus Reinach Marvin Orie South Africa 35 - 17 Australia And here's the lineup against NZ the following week. Steven Kitshoff Malcolm Marx Frans Malherbe Eben Etzebeth Franco Mostert Kwagga Smith Pieter-Steph du Toit Duane Vermeulen Faf de Klerk Handre Pollard Makazole Mapimpi Damian de Allende Lukhanyo Am Cheslin Kolbe Willie le Roux Bongi Mbonambi Tendai Mtawarira Trevor Nyakane RG Snyman Francois Louw Hershel Jantjies Jesse Kriel Francois Steyn New Zealand 16 - 16 South Africa

Was 2019. Hershell Jantjies made his debut in the "B" side against Australia and I think scored 2 tries on debut.

Ox is out injured so Kitshoff in now. Ox is a great scrummager.

Malherbe ( Best scrumming tight head in the World , WC winner) , Mbonambi ( regular Bok starter , WC winner ) , RG Snyman ( ( WC winner ) , Jean Kleyn ( capped Irish International) , Duane Vermuelen ( no intro needed ) , Pieter Steff duToit ( 2019 World player of the year , WC winner )....and that's just the pack ..Sure don't look like second stringers to me .

Munster while URC champions are second tier when it comes to European Rugby, below La Rochelle, Leinster, Toulouse and Sarries (though Sarries may have dropped off). Its not to say that Munster are weak but having two test locks is more or less a basic requirement to be a top 8 team.

How about Exeter who play the same style who have pack that looks to sufficate around the ruck meaning that Libbok is unable run or has the time to kick meaning he becomes less effective. Stormers lost two games at home last season both to Munster so it is not a once off. International players Klyen, Snayman, Bernie, O'Mahoney and Coombes who are all test players so what they do is more test standard.

Faf hasn't been first choice 9 for a while. Esterhuizen is a better player than de Allende and Arendse has been chosen ahead of Kolbe on merit for a good while

The three tight forwards I mentioned, Kwagga and Mapimpi might be considered likely starters. De Allende should be behind Esterhuizen anyway otherwise and Faf and Cheslin haven't been best in their positrion for a while. Siya is hurt. I'd suggest 4 of their clearly best 15 from the last 12 months haven't been picked. A couple of debates and an injury.
