Wallabies DIY player ratings from loss to Pumas: Marky Mark's magic night, Wright goes horribly wrong

By The Roar / Editor

The Wallabies’ 2022 loss to the Pumas in Argentina coincided with some of the lowest DIY player ratings we’ve ever seen here at The Roar – and while this year’s loss hasn’t seen quite as many dismal scores, you’ve certainly all made your feelings known about the team’s start to The Rugby Championship.

Just three players averaged scored of higher than 6 among our voters, while there were nine ‘fail’ averages of below than 5, including Dave Porecki, Jed Holloway and five of the eight Wallabies coming off the bench.

Of the positives, Mark Nawaqanitawase’s game was the clear standout, the young gun’s average of 7.62 far and away the best of anyone in gold on the night – and following his best-afield performance in last year’s Spring Tour win over Wales, it’s his second Test in a row topping the charts.

At the other end, it was a nightmare evening for Tom Wright, the fullback’s error-riddled performance resulting in a team-worst average of just 3.19.

Nearly 22 per cent of you rated Wright’s game a one, narrowly below the near-quarter of you that gave him a 3; at the very least, that puts him ahead of Suliasi Vunivalu from the loss to the Springboks, who set a new Roar record with 47.8 per cent of ‘1’ votes and an average of just 2.02. So there’s that at least.

Check out the full breakdown below.

Was it really 5 handling errors? Where are you getting that stat from?

OK I'm a bit of a stats nerd so please ignore if you are trying to stay awake. I'd love to see the median and the distribution. If the median and the mean ( aka average) are close then the data is probably normally (bell-shaped) distributed and the ratings are no that influenced by bias but otherwise... Since we only have the mode (aka most common) and mean any conclusions are of lower certainty. We still find some interesting things about our fellow roarers. Compare Ikitau and Uelese, Ikitau mean&mode are 5.06 & 5, so the results are probably fairly normal with lots of 4s, 5s and 6s and only a few out-there results but Uelese got 3.39 and 5, so a long way from normal with a lot of 1s and 2s, maybe almost as many as the 5s, which at first look with no more detail suggests a very biased data set.

But QC missed one tackle and kicked out on the full once. For him to get above 6 he has to have no errors and zero missed tackles. He is held to held to a higher standard to others. Nic White scoring a 6, the same as Quade shows us many punters expect miracles from Quade or people just don`t like him.

23. Carter Gordon (Sub on in 17th minute) Average score: 6.71 Most common rating: 7 (38.4%) A 7 ? 5 handling errors coupled with the knock on from the kick off which was the knife in the Wallabies back. How we have lowered our standards.

QC deserves a higher score IMO , he kept the wallabies in it with 100% goal success and vital support on 2 tries. Also were the results of DIY votes on the game against Boks ever published?
