Maroons see red over calls to change Origin format as Slater closes in on inking new deal

By News / Wire

Queensland Rugby League boss Ben Ikin says negotiations to extend the contract of Maroons coach Billy Slater are at the “pointy end” as he urged the NRL not to change the format of State of Origin.

Slater and Maroons women’s coach Tahnee Norris are both off-contract and Ikin said the QRL’s goal remains to re-sign both.

Slater has guided the Maroons to consecutive Origin successes, while Norris was victorious this season after a drawn series the Queenslanders won on for and against.

“I am more confident than I am not,” Ikin said when asked about keeping Slater on board.

“There are a whole lot of moving parts at the moment around both teams and both series.

“We are still trying to understand what the series schedule will look like next year and how long the camps will be. We are working through budgets.

“The pleasing thing for us is that Tahnee and Billy have been really patient. We have been in constant communication with them.”

There is a desire from NRL clubs to reduce the Origin series from its current six-week format to lessen the impact on the season.

Clubs also want 10-day Origin camps reduced to week-long get-togethers.

Ikin, who said the QRL was in constant dialogue with clubs about their concerns, warned against such a move.

“We would like the Origin schedule to remain the way it is,” he said.

“Across the history of Origin they have tried to skin this thing, pull it apart and put it back together a million different ways.

“This is the model that just seems to land well for everybody. The broadcasters need to agree to how it is going to be played and the way it is drawn out now allows a whole lot of storytelling between games.

“If you compress up over three weeks … it is here and it is gone.”

Ikin said the allure of the game’s showpiece could be diminished by a compressed series.

“This is the toughest collision sport you can play on the planet,” he said.

“To jam three games back-to-back-to-back you run the risk of diminishing the quality of the product.”

Ikin said the QRL would support the women’s Origin series moving from two games to three.

The QRL on Tuesday announced a new three-year partnership with Westpac.

From 2024, the bank will become the front of jersey sponsor for the Maroons’ men’s team and shoulder sponsor for Queensland’s women.

“Norths Narrowly Nutted” Did this editor go on to start the NT News by chance? I didn’t see the Souths v Valleys article but I will have a deeper look through the site later. Is it a bit windy up there today? They’ve cancelled my flight out of Wagga this morning.

No, thank you David. I accept that you will try to be better in your expression of bafflement at the perceived irrational behaviour you observe. I, too, will try and express myself with more succinct grammatical formation of words that you may instead be able to address the topic.

I almost forgot, I recently stumbled across something you might enjoy - a report from the first ever BRL game played at Lang Park - at least one newspaper thought the ground might have a future as a league venue. Thank you, Nat. Your comment has been noted and will be kept in mind. I'm not sure if I randomly mentioned you or in what context that may have occurred, but if I did, I apologise without caveat. The rest of your post doesn't make much sense, at once talking about a free and undirected flow of 'banter 'and a 'final word', which is a contradiction in terms. If you believe in a free, undirected flow of discourse, there can be no final word, and a differing or alternative view should be no problem in that context, provided it is relevant to the topic, which it is. In my previous post, I said that I understand and accept that my view is not shared by you (and, by extension, others). I note you expressed concern about me 'casting [sic] dispersions'. I'll try to do better, but I imagine I'll still express my bafflement at the irrational behaviour I frequently observe as a long-time resident of Qld. As for for the notion of 'elevating' myself, it's a flimsy appeal to your own authority and I'll leave it there.

Well, no. The difference is that one view, mine, refers to the game and those who take part in the banter around the contest. Banter between those who care about the result as much as they care about the result any of club or code they support. You’ve been here long enough to know it flows both ways quite freely with the final word, triumphalist as it may be, going to the winners. Your love of the code is not in question. Your contributions on various topics are considered, appreciated and generally well received. Your opinion on origin is yours to keep. An alternative view is fine but to you elevate yourself above this particular contest and outside of the banter because you don’t care. Then cast dispersions to all origin fans, more so targeted at Qlders and specifically on me (You did randomly mention me)? Why, because we don’t share your alternative view?

Ah, an appeal to emotion. You won't find any of that here. It's really not as simple as that, Nat. I love rugby league, as you know. I've gradually come to the view that Origin has come to be a poor quality, unnecessary and net-negative part of the sport. I will continue to discuss it in that context. If that's a "pedestal", so be it. I understand and accept you don't share this view. I would also posit that your triumphalist rhetoric (refer above) is substantively no different to mine in so far as you divorce yourself from an alternative viewpoint and poke fun at it, all from an elevated perch of some description.

It's not as simple as that, Nat. I love rugby league, as my various contributions to this site surely indicate. I've gradually come to the view that SOO is a cancer upon said game. I'll continue to discuss it in that context. If that's a "pedestal", so be it. I accept you have a different view of the "situation", though I'd posit your triumphalist rhetoric is different to the sort of things I say in tone only, i.e. you look down upon, and poke fun at, those who don't enjoy this particular aspect of the game from an elevated perch of some variety.

It must be fun to divorce yourself from the situation and poke fun at those who do enjoy the game. Quite the pedestal you look down from.

Okay then, poor choice of words on my part. Please accept my addendum: [you can gradually turn it into a joke even more of a joke than it already is, though]

not so "little" anymore, you're a lot bigger than us, probs got more players too. we were happy you see you leave the nest in 1859 and learn to stand on your own two feet. sure, you were a bit wobbly to start with but now with the extra hard work you're doing, you seem to be goin' ok. it's more we gaze on you with a benevolent smile and a sense of paternal pride.

And therein lies the key, Bern. You can't do anything about the delusions of folk in this part of the world, you can gradually turn it into a joke though. Talk the talk, of course, pick an at least vaguely plausible team so it's not too obvious, but essentially tank it.

Well, I reckon it would be more accurately described as North New South Wales, but what is North Queensland would have been Far North New South Wales, and then what is now Far North Queensland would have been Very Far North New South Wales... but north of that, Cape York would still be Cape York.
