'Should have smoked them': May claims Dees 'so much better than Pies', says qualifying final loss 'f--king hurts'

By The Roar / Editor

Melbourne star Steven May has raised the ire of Collingwood supporters by claiming the Demons ‘should have smoked’ the Magpies in their qualifying final clash.

The Dees had a remarkable 69 inside 50s to 37, but an inefficient and inaccurate forward line proved costly, managing just seven goals to lose to the Pies by seven points.

The match proved a turning point in the finals series, with Collingwood going on to win two more thrilling finals over GWS and Brisbane to claim premiership glory, while the Dees again squandered a winning position to lose their semi final to Carlton by just two points to slump out of September in straight sets for the second straight year.

Speaking at the club’s best and fairest function, a candid May, who finished fifth in the count behind eventual winner Christian Petracca, admitted the way the Demons’ season finished ‘f–king hurts’.

“We lose to Collingwood, and they go on to win the flag, and it f–king hurts; because we’re a better team than them, we should have smoked them,” May said.

“And to sit there on grand final day and watch them hoist the cup, and get the medals, I’m sitting there going ‘Jeez, our team’s so much better than these guys’. We should’ve been out there, but we weren’t.

“We’ve got an unbelievable list, an unbelievable coaching group, and the hunger has never been hungrier.”

Vision of May’s speech surfaced on social media on Sunday after being posted by X user ‘Lace Out’, with the response from Collingwood supporters predictably harsh.

May has since been forced to hospital after suffering an allergic reaction on a night out with partner Sachi Dade.

To be fair Melbourne 100% should have won the final against the Pies this year.

Still banging on about last year. The article is about this year. May just thinks Melbourne were better than them, probably because the two times they played statistically they were miles in front. I liked the candour (clearly a few frothies) - Players are more honest at their own functions. It’s certainly triggered quite a few roarers!

The reference to last year was in regards to trying to establish how May assesses his team's performance as his judgement is questionable at best ie if he thinks he's better than the Pies this year given the outcome well what did he think about last year given it's outcome. I assume if he thinks Melbourne are better than the premiers he'd also feel the same in regards to Brisbane, Port and Carlton who all finished higher. Maybe we should save time on this whole the concept of "playing games" thing and just award the flag to whomever May nominates at Melbourne's annual B&F.

You keep believing that. Enjoy your 1 AFL premiership. You won’t see another one for a very very very long time, and that’s if your team doesn’t end up in the garbage heap within the next 30 years.

Of course I’d miss them, how would you suppose to know that? I know Fitzroy supporters that had no interest in Brisbane winning the premiership. Melbourne’s flag success wasn’t built on hand outs, I’ve already mentioned all the canny drafting they executed. Not that you’ve addressed that, or the fact that tanking was rife amongst the league or the fact that it’s just a horribly compromised competition. Pies had three father sons, the Kangers a top pick for McKay, academy players for certain teams etc etc. The compromises are endless and continue on. May just spoke honestly after a few cans. Who cares if he thinks they are better than the Pie’s and should have smoked them. They really should have if you dissect it properly. That’s footy.

You miss the very point. This club was gifted players by the AFL. It orchestrated the abuse of the equalisation mechanics systematically over the years/ decades. It comes as no surprise that a spoon fed child like Melbourne, is incapable of turning such an advantage into sustained premiership success and glory. They are nothing more than a VFL relic, masquerading as a culturally significant entity in the world of AFL. If they disappeared tomorrow, no one would miss them…. not even you. They should have been relocated and renamed the Tassie Tankers years ago. Your hero May, blindingly misses this too. What a cl0wn, along with his comments. Is that a harsh enough assessment of May and his awesome Melbourne team that’s so much better than Collingwood’s?

A negative outlook on life is what’s happening in Ukraine & Israel. It’s footy chat – toughen up.

Interesting to view the journey of Melbourne and Hawthorn after the 1996 "merger"... where Melbourne members voted "yes", and Hawthorn members overwhelmingly voted "no". So what happened after? Hawthorn...penniless, pulled themselves up with their own bootstraps, went to the bottom, drafted well, traded very well, picked an unknown coach, boosted its membership, and went on to achieve 4 flags in 8 years in one of the most competitive eras of football ever (meaning, during that period, Geel, Syd, Freo and WCE were all genuine premiership contenders). Today, Hawthorn is one of only 4 clubs which is financially independent of the AFL. Now look at Melbourne...made a GF in 2000, then tanked for all the world to see, got numerous No.1 draft picks, drafted poorly, begged the AFL for more help and $, had Paul Roos choppered in as Coach (with the help of the AFL), had David Jackson choppered in as CEO (paid for by the AFL), whined for more assistance and $, finally won one in Perth, and then as Premiers bombed out in 4 consecutive MCG finals. As a football fan, there's a lot to love about the great history of Melbourne FC. These days, it's all pretty uninspiring.

My point was, there would have been absolute vitriol if Kozzie did that to Pendle’s so let’s have some perspective. Getting Eddie and Bucks out was just the ticket, Melbourne just lost Uze unfortunately so they have had change. But fair go, they won a long awaited flag with the current bunch and had injuries unfortunately.

They got rid of Eddie and won a premiership not long after. Melbourne might want to start thinking about who to eject at HQ too.

Not as miserable as one of Melbourne's senior players gloating over how awesome they are, despite being dusted in straight sets. Miserable is probably the wrong word. Embarrassing fits better.
