Sicily cops one-game suspension for kicking as bans loom for Bomber, Sun

By News / Wire

Hawthorn’s James Sicily has been offered a one-game suspension for kicking while Essendon’s Mason Redman and Gold Coast’s Malcom Rosas also face one-match AFL bans.

Sicily has been cited for kicking Bomber Andrew McGrath in the Hawks’ 24-point loss on Saturday.

The Hawks’ captain, who was last year banned for three games for rough conduct, has been charged with kicking McGrath with intentional conduct, medium impact and body contact.

Essendon’s Redman has been charged with striking Hawk Jai Newcombe in an off-the-ball incident. The contact has been deemed as intentional, high contact with low impact.

The Suns’ Rosas has been cited for headbutting Adelaide’s Max Michalanenny in Gold’s Coast’s six-point win on Saturday night.

Rosas can accept a one-match suspension, with his contact ruled intentional and high, with low impact.

Six other players were charged and offered fines from Saturday’s fixtures.

With early pleas, Hawthorn’s Newcombe (forceful front-on contact, $3,750),  Essendon’s Todd Goldstein (striking, $2,500), GWS’ Jack Buckley (tripping, $1,250), Giant Harry Perryman (striking, $1,875), Geelong’s Jhye Clark (dangerous tackle, $2,500) and the Sun’s Connor Budarick (melee, $1,250) can accept financial sanctions.

Hewett did almost exactly the same action and copped a fine, it reeks of double standards

Look at the vision. Sicily connected with his lower leg , not his boot. Metal studs didn't come anywhere near it. And why is Redman's punch to the head questionable? If i come and give you one on the snout will you just accept it ?

Look kicking is an action that needs to be discouraged particularly if you’re wearing metal studs. The suspension that is questionable is Redmans, hopefully the bomber will appeal it

I’d like to hear Birdman’s view on this. He’s always impartial on incidents involving Sicily…
