The Sydney Swans have their first win of the season with a 19-point victory over Carlton, while the Blues are left with an 0-3 record despite another gallant performance.
Final score
Carlton Blues 10.14.74
Sydney Swans 14.9.93
In recent years, Carlton and Sydney at Marvel Stadium would have been described as a mere percentage booster for the Swans. However, the early rounds are indicating a changing of the guard, a development in generations and on this occasion the four points are there for the taking for either side. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 1:45pm AEDT.
Both sides go into the clash 0-2 and desperately needing a win to keep their seasons alive. The Blues, while winless, are playing a more promising brand of footy than previous seasons. Patrick Cripps and Sam Walsh are hinting to tear the game apart between the arcs over the next decade.
But it is 2015 No.1 draft pick, Jacob Weitering who is going under the radar at the moment and will be one of Carlton’s most important players on the ground in Saturday’s clash.
Weitering kept the in-form Justin Westhoff goalless in Round 2 and performed valiantly against the star stuttered Richmond attack in round 1.
The 21-year-old will most likely drift onto Lance Franklin, the key forward is five majors away from equalling Essendon great Matthew Lloyd on the seventh all-time list and has often cashed in against the Blues. Weitering could be the difference in the important clash.
For the Swans, they have managed to play some exhilarating football but have been too easy to get on top of through the middle and early stages of the match.
The 2018 issue of not being able to kick a score remains for the Swans. Besides Franklin, the Swans are struggling for an avenue to goal. They are at this early stage 16th in the competition for goals kicked, only averaging 8.5.
Prediction
While the Blues have performed with more promise in the opening games, it is hard to tip against the side who has made September for the last nine consecutive seasons.
However, past record doesn’t mean the Blues won’t make the Swans earn it.

They’ve been showing an improvement and that’s all that can be asked for at the moment. Brisbane were like this for several years and have consistently gone to the draft to find top end talent which is paying off. Unfortunately for the Blues, they’re are looking to give away a top 5 pick to the Crows this year. They would want to have a lot of money to go after Coniglio!

Same old Carlton! Can’t wait for the “Green shoots” report!

Honourable loss? Seriously, CFC is still a weak club after all these years and undeserving of being in the AFL comp.

The hope brigade in Melb were tipping against the swans as they have countless times before and incorrectly so.

Aw, you do not deserve to think of yourself as a person with any knowledge of this sport or any reasoned perspective of the comp called the AFL. Please s up.

AW - your bad-tempered gross exaggerations detract from any sensible points you might wish to make (to the degree one could seriously wonder about the state of your mental health). Re your weird, rather gleeful prediction that AFL will die in NSW: The Swans have 60,000+ members (growing all the time) and are one of the most-watched AFL teams. As well, GWS (considering they are in NRL-land) are going well with growing membership and interest. They played brilliantly against Richmond today and if they crack the big one or even make the top four, AFL - rather than dying in NSW (and why are you so keen for that to happen I wonder?) - will continue to go from strength to strength even if the Swans go through a few poor seasons (which invariably happens to most teams). It is possible to share your opinion about teams other than your own without resorting to name-calling and absurd hyperbole thus making it highly unlikely anyone will take you seriously.

Did you somehow miss Heeney kicking 4 goals today and being best on ground? He averages a goal a game in his career so far, as do Ronke, Papley and Hayward (who kicked 2 in a half today before his jaw was broken). The Swans actually do spread their scoring around. You are right (it is the only thing in your comments that makes sense) in that the Swans will struggle (this season) to beat the best few teams, but no one is expecting the Swans to be top 4 this year.

Well i might be pathetic and ignorant, but swans for mine have an immense way to go this year to even challenge for the eight. They have been too slow, too reliant on one player, and too defensive to be a challenge. The midfield in the 1st 2 weeks got beaten convincingly. Hope at some stage im proved wrong, and i will be quite happy to eat humble pie

Ok, should have said except franklin. But you cannot rely on 1 player to win you a game. Unless they get more out of the younger ones and start spreading the scoring, they will struggle mightily against the better attacking teams. You cant shut down a game defensively and expect to win every time

So your ‘argument’, if we can call it that, has moved from the Swans are “a dour, pathetic, crap heap” to the Swans score 80-90 a match and defend well. No-one is saying that this year’s Swans are one of the top 5 teams, or one of the top 5 scoring teams in the league. But as recently as 2016 the Swans averaged over 100 per match, and your original comments about the Swans having no one with goal scoring ability are, again, pathetic and ignorant.

Hamstring. Not sure it is a bad one as he wanted to come back on but medicos kept him off. Might not be a tear so hopefully he could be ok for next week.

Swans win by managing (struggling) to get to about 80 to early 90s and just defending for the rest. When it comes to scoring power, they are nowhere near the top 5 or 6 teams

“They have not got players with goal kicking ability‘ Hey, can you just remind the rest of us as to how many goals Franklin has kicked in his career?

The Swans beat teams (which they have done far for often than not over the past 15 years) by scoring more than their opponents. Today they scored 93, which by the way is more than Carlton have managed for a long, long time. If Melbourne turn up on Thursday in the same way as they have for the first 3 rounds, then the Swans will win.

Pathetic and misguided?! They only beat teams by shutting down and turning the game into a grind. Cannot play 4 quarters of good attacking footy. If Melbourne turn up next week, the swans are toast.

No players with goal kicking ability? Are you kidding? What about Franklin, Heeney (who kicked 4 today), Papley, Ronke ( who has kicked 7 in a match). Your comments are pathetic, misguided and reeking of ignorance.

It's like the swans don't want to kick 100 points. What a dour, pathetic crap heap they are. Seriously more ugly ducklings than swans. They will go winless in their next 5 to 6 games. They have not got players with goal kicking ability that can put teams away. Afl will die in NSW

Great, another honourable loss. No excuses this week, the Swans were ripe for the pickings. We are going to have to start looking at Bolton, our weaknesses

The Swans open there account here at Marvel stadium. Sublime individual performances by both Curnow and heeney in front of goal. The Swans win. 93-74. Valiant performance by the blues but the swans get the chocolates.
