Round 9 begins under the roof at Marvel Stadium, with the Western Bulldogs desperate to reverse their poor recent form against Collingwood in a rare ‘away game at home’. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage from 7:50pm (AEST).

With competition for spots in the final eight already heating up, this is a must-win game for both sides.

In the last decade, the Magpiees and Dogs have spilt even with seven wins each from their past 14 encounters, with eight of the 14 matches decided within three goals.

The Bulldogs face the most pressure heading into this game, having recorded just three wins from eight matches this season.

The Dogs desperately need this win with a star-stuttered midfield and coach Luke Beveridge who has been under pressure since a press conference blunder in the opening round.

The Pies continue to impress as they keep building their young side under new coach Craig McRae.

One player to watch will be Magpies’ Patrick Lipinski who will play his first game against his former club tonight.

The Pies sit one spot above the Bulldogs in ninth position with four wins from the first eight rounds, having fallen out of the eight following their loss to Richmond last week.

For the Bulldogs, currently sitting tenth, it’s even more dire: a loss would leave them two wins and percentage outside the eight, a dismal result for a reigning grand finalist and a team tipped to be up to their necks in the premiership race.

The Dogs suffered a ‘night of carnage’, in the words of coach Luke Beveridge, when they went down to Port Adelaide in Adelaide last week. Cody Weightman broke his collarbone, Tim O’Brien pinged his calf and Laitham Vandermeer suffered a serious hamstring injury, with all to miss this Friday night clash.

However, captain Marcus Bontempelli is back after being managed out of the Power loss, while key defender Alex Keath also returns. Ruckman Jordan Sweet gets his first game of the year with both Stefan Martin and Tim English missing, while the Dogs are blooding a debutant in intercept defender Luke Cleary.

Meanwhile, Magpies goalsneak Jack Ginnivan’s absence through illness will disappoint neutral fans, with two of the game’s biggest pantomime villains in Ginnivan and Weightman both out.

Prediction

Western Bulldogs by three points.

Being a bit harsh on Adams I think he’s a little too one paced and too injury prone but he’s necessary to protect the softer bodies of the Collingwood midfield

Daicos might be light framed but he has a cool head and uses the ball well off both sides of the body even when under pressure.

Adams gives his all but I don't think he'd get a game in most teams...I'd throw Maynard in as the under the pack bull...Libba killed him last night

Look, they rolled the dice to get Beams in for a tilt in 2019 but what a disaster that was. Then Bucks went all out defence in 2019 and we kind of limped into a preliminary final.

Yeah I’ve been surprised that I haven’t seen Poulter more this year I expect part of it is Craig Macrae is similar to David Teague in that he wants to rely more on senior talent rather than throwing young guns in the deep end like brendon Bolton did

There wasn’t enough of a gap between when bucks played and when and when he coached

Yes, time to release Nick Daicos in the middle and rest in forward line...he's a wasted asset down the back...I understand he's light framed, they're protecting him and adjusting to senior football, but wouldn't 15 quality possessions hitting forward targets be more value...I would also like to see macrae in middle given more time...poulter to begin to replace sidebottom on the wing with Steele sitting in a forward pocket

Ned Guy isn't the only one to blame. Nathan Buckley's past came back to haunt him this week. Obviously didn't tolerate characters who he considered weak-minded like Treloar and Lumumba.

Beveridge on Tim English's illness: "Just got a really really bad bout of this flu... it's just really knocked him around so nothing sinister, we think he will be okay but he has probably dropped a little bit of weight, it'll take a little while for him to get his bearings again."

Luke Beveridge post-game: "Some of the guys who haven't played a lot of footy are playing in our front end so that's challenge. For them to create a bit of havoc down there and score some goals through stealth at different times, the centre bounce situation was largely in our favour which always means a fair bit."

Craig MaRae post-game: “I think there is a real core of leadership that we’ve got at the club, there’s enough there to lead from the front. I think the one thing about leadership is you need good followers and we’re developing a core of followers that know how to play a system. We’re nine games into a new game plan. I must admit at times, I reckon we had 14 Collingwood jumpers on and four or five and we’re like are they wearing our jumper tonight? Are they predictable to what we’re doing? These are questions as coaches you go, we need to get on the same page. So a lot of that for me is coaching and I take responsibility for that. If we’re not all on the same page, we need to work harder to make sure we do.”
